1 Allora Pilato prese Iesù, e flagellollo.	1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.
2 E gli cavalieri posero in capo a Iesù una corona di spine; e vestironlo di porpora.	2 And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe;
3 E venivano dinanzi a lui, e dicevano: Iddio ti salvi, re de' giudei. E davangli delle gotate (e guanciate).	3 they came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands.
4 Uscì Pilato un' altra volta fuori, e disse a loro: ecco ch' io vel meno fuori, acciò che voi conosciate che niuna cagione ho trovata in lui.	4 Pilate went out again, and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him."
5 E allora fu menato fuori Iesù, con una corona di spine in capo, e vestito di porpora. E disse a loro: eccovi l'uomo.	5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"
6 Vedendolo li pontefici e li ministri, gridorono dicendo: crucifiggilo, crucifiggilo. Disse a loro Pilato: tolletelo, e crucifiggetelo voi; c''io per me non trovo niuna cagione in lui.	6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him."
7 Risposero gli Iudei, e dissero: noi abbiamo la legge, e secondo la (nostra) legge dee morire, però che si fece Figliuolo di Dio.	7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."
8 E udendo Pilato quella parola, temette molto più.	8 When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid;
9 E tornò dentro nel palazzo, e anche disse a Iesù: onde sei tu? E Iesù nulla rispose.	9 he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.
10 Disse Pilato come, non mi parli tu? non sai ch' io ho potestà di crucifiggerti, e potestà di lasciarti?	10 Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?"
11 Rispose Iesù: tu non aresti potestà alcuna sopra di me, se ella non ti fosse data di sopra; ma chi mi ti ha dato, n' ha maggiore peccato.	11 Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin."
12 E in questo Pilato cercava pure di lasciarlo. Dicevano gli Iudei gridando: se tu lasci costui, non sei amico di Cesare; imperò che chiunque si fa re contraddice a Cesare.	12 Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar."
13 Udendo Pilato queste parole, fece menare fuori Iesù; e sedette per tribunale, nel luogo dove s'è detto LICOSTRATO; ma in lingua ebraica è detto GABBATA (luogo di dare giudizio).	13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Era il giorno dinanzi della pasca, in su l'ora della sesta. Disse Pilato a' Iudei: ecco il re vostro.	14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
15 E loro gridavano: tolle, tolle, crucifiggilo. Disse a loro Pilato il re vostro, crucifiggetelo voi, ch' io non lo voglio crucifiggerlo. Risposero gli pontetici, e dissero: noi non abbiamo re, se non Cesare.	15 They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
16 Allora Pilato diede a loro Iesù, che il crucifiggessero. E loro il preseno.	16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.
17 E posengli la croce adosso, e menoronlo al luogo dove si dice CALVARIO, che in lingua ebrea è detto GOLGOTA.	17 So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha.
18 E quivi il crucifissero, e con lui due altri (li quali erano ladroni), l' uno da uno lato e l'altro. dall' altro lato, e Iesù in mezzo.	18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.
19 Scrisse Pilato il titolo suo, e poselo sopra la croce. Era scritto: IESÙ NAZARENO, RE DE' Iudei.	19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
20 E questa scritta molti Iudei la lesseno; imperò che il luogo, dove crucifissero Iesù, era appresso alla città. Ed era scritto in tre lingue, cioè: ebraica, greca e latina.	20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
21 Dissero a Pilato li pontefici de' Iudei: non scrivi RE DE' IUDEI, ma che il disse: SONO RE DE' IUDEI.	21 The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Rispose Pilato: quello ch' è scritto, scritto sia.	22 Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."
23 E avendo li cavalieri crucifisso Iesù, presero le sue vestimenta, e feciono quattro parti, e ciascuno de' cavalieri ebbe la sua parte. Eravi una tonica (tutta di uno pezzo) senza cucitura alcuna, di sopra lavorata per tutto.	23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom;
24 Dissero infra loro: non la dividiamo, ma poniamo la sorte, di cui debbe essere di noi; acciò che si adempisse la Scrittura, che dice: divisero fra loro le vestimenta mie, e sopra le mie vesti posero la sorte. E queste cose fecero gli cavalieri.	24 so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be." This was to fulfill the scripture, "They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots."
25 Stava appresso della croce di Iesù la madre sua, e la sorella della madre sua, Maria Cleofe e Maria Magdalena (e Maria di Iacobo minore, e la madre di Iosef, e Maria Solome, e la madre degli figliuoli di Zebedeo).	25 So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 E vedendo Iesù la madre sua, e il discepolo il quale amava, disse alla madre sua: femina, ecco il figliuolo tuo.	26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"
27 E poi disse al discepolo: ecco la madre tua. E d'allora inanzi la ricevette [il discepolo] per sua.	27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
28 E sapendo Iesù che ogni cosa era compiuta, e acciò che si adempisse la Scrittura, disse: io ho sete.	28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), "I thirst."
29 Era quivi uno vaso pieno di aceto. E loro ebbero una sponga, ed empieronla di aceto e issopo, (e puoseronla in cima di una canna), e puosengli alla bocca.	29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.
30 E pigliandone di questo, Iesù disse: consumato è. E inclinò il capo, e rendè lo spirito.	30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 E gli Iudei, perchè era il giorno innanzi dalla pasca, acciò che (per cagione) non rimanessero gli corpi in su la croce nel sabbato; imperò che quello sabbato era grande; pregorono Pilato, che facesse a loro rompere le gambe, e che (gli corpi) fossero tolti via.	31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Vennero gli cavalieri, e ruppeno al primo le gambe, e anche all' altro ch' era crucifisso con lui.	32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;
33 E venendo a Iesù, videro ch' era già morto; sì che a lui non gli ruppeno le gambe.	33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34 Ma uno de' cavalieri gli dètte con la lancia nel costato, e immantinente uscì sangue e acqua.	34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
35 E colui che vide queste cose, ne rende (vera) testimonianza; ed è vera la testimonianza sua. E colui lo sa che vere cose dice, acciò che voi crediate.	35 He who saw it has borne witness--his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth--that you also may believe.
36 E però sono fatte queste cose acciò la scrittura si adempiesse, che dice: voi non romperete di lui osso niuno crura;	36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."
37 E anche altrove la Scrittura dice: vederanno colui il quale loro tormentorono.	37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced."
38 Dopo tutte queste cose venne Iosef di Arimatea, e andò a Pilato, e pregollo che gli dèsse il corpo di Iesù; il quale Iosef era discepolo di Iesù, occulto per temenza de' Iudei. E Pilato gli concedette. Venne adunque, e tolse il corpo di Iesù.	38 After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body.
39 E Nicodemo venne (insieme con Iosef), il quale (Nicodemo) in prima era andato a Iesù di notte, e portò seco uno alberello con aloe e con mirra, quasi libbre cento.	39 Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight.
40 E presero il corpo di Iesù, (e levoronlo del a croce), e puoseronlo in uno lenzuolo nuovo con unguenti odoriferi, sì com' era usanza de' Iudei di sepellire.	40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41 E in quello luogo dove Iesù fu crucifisso era uno orto; e in quello orto era uno monumento nuovo, nel quale niuno an ch' era stato posto.	41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.
42 E per cagione ch' era appresso la pasca de' Iudei (in quello giorno), e il monumento sì era appresso, puosero Iesù quivi dentro.	42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
