| 1 Iesù adunque, ante sei giorni della pasca, venne in Betania, là dove Lazzaro stette morto, il quale Iesù resuscitò. | 1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. |
| 2 E avendogli fatta una cena, e Marta apparecchiava, e Lazzaro era uno di quelli che mangiavano con lui. | 2 There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at table with him. |
| 3 Maria allora tolse una libbra di unguento molto prezioso, che si chiama nardipistici, e unse gli piedi di Iesù, e con gli suoi capelli gli asciugò; sì che tutta la casa riempissi di odore di quello unguento. | 3 Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. |
| 4 Disse uno de' discepoli suoi, cioè Iuda Scariote, il quale il doveva tradire : | 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, |
| 5 perchè non si vendè questo unguento trecento denari, e fussensi dati alli poveri? | 5 "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" |
| 6 Ma questo non disse egli, perchè egli avesse cura de' poveri, ma perchè egli era furo, (e ladro); ma perchè egli se gli avrebbe riposti e ciò ch' era a loro dato e mandato, egli portava seco. | 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. |
| 7 Disse allora Iesù lasciatela fare, sì che al giorno della mia sepultura quello mi guardi. | 7 Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. |
| 8 Li poveri averete sempre con voi, ma me non averete sempre. | 8 The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." |
| 9 Allora molta turba conobbe (e seppe) che Iesù era quivi; li quali non erano venuti per vedere Iesù, ma erano venuti per vedere Lazzaro, il quale era resuscitato da morte. | 9 When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. |
| 10 Ma li principi de' sacerdoti pensavano di (volere) uccidere Lazzaro. | 10 So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, |
| 11 Imperò che molti si partivano da' Iudei, e credevano in Iesù. | 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. |
| 12 Ma, la mattina, molta turba la quale era. venuta nel giorno della festa, udendo che Iesù veniva in Ierusalem, | 12 The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. |
| 13 tolsero gli rami di oliva, e andorono incontra a lui, e dicevano gridando: facci salvi, benedetto tu, che vieni nel nome del Signore, Re d' Israel. | 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" |
| 14 E trovando Iesù l' asinello, sali su a sedere, sì come è scritto: | 14 And Jesus found a young ass and sat upon it; as it is written, |
| 15 non temere, figliuola di Sion; ecco il re tuo, che viene a te sedendo sopra il poledro dell' asina. | 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on an ass's colt!" |
| 16 Ma questo non conobbero prima gli suoi discepoli; ma quando Iesù fu glorificato, allora ricordoronsi di queste cose ch' erano scritte di lui, e di quelle che lui fece. | 16 His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. |
| 17 E la turba rendeva testimonianza (di lui), la quale era stata con lui quando resuscitò Lazzaro da morte, chiamandolo dal monumento (quando disse: Lazzaro vieni fuori). | 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. |
| 18 E però gli venne incontro molta turba; perchè avea udito che avea fatto questo segno (e miracolo). | 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. |
| 19 Allora gli Farisei dissero infra loro: vedete che noi non facciamo nulla? tutto il mondo va dopo costui. | 19 The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him." |
| 20 Erano alquanti gentili, li quali erano venuti per orare il giorno della festa. | 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. |
| 21 Questi andorono a Filippo di Betsaida di Galilea, e pregoronlo dicendogli: signore, noi volemo vedere Iesù. | 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Beth-saida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." |
| 22 Andò Filippo, e disselo ad Andrea; e Andrea e Filippo disserlo a Iesù. | 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. |
| 23 E Iesù rispose a loro, dicendo così: e' viene l'ora, che il Figliuolo dell' uomo sia clarificato. | 23 And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. |
| 24 In verità, in verità vi dico che (se) il granello del grano, che cade in terra, se non muore, | 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. |
| 25 in sè solo rimane; ma se egli muore, farà molto frutto. Chi ama l' anima sua, perderà quella; e chi ha in odio l'anima sua in questo mondo, in vita eterna guardaralla. | 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. |
| 26 Chiunque mi serve, sì mi sèguiti; e là dove sarò io, ivi sarà il servo mio. E colui che mi servirà, il Padre mio onorarà lui. | 26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him. |
| 27 Ora l'anima mia è turbata. E che dirò? [Padre] in questa ora fammi salvo; imperò che a questa ora sono venuto. | 27 "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour. |
| 28 Padre, clarifica il nome tuo. Allora venne una voce dal cielo, e disse: io l'ho clarificato, ancora il clarificarò. | 28 Father, glorify thy name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." |
| 29 E la turba, ch' era quivi, udiva, e diceva ch' egli era venuto uno tuono. Altri dicevano: l'angelo (di Dio) gli ha parlato. | 29 The crowd standing by heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." |
| 30 Rispose Iesù, e disse: questa voce non è venuta per me, ma per voi. | 30 Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. |
| 31 Ora è il giudicio del mondo; ora il principe di questo mondo sarà cacciato fuori. | 31 Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; |
| 32 E se io sarò esaltato da terra, tutte le cose traerò a me medesimo. | 32 and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." |
| 33 Questo diceva, significando di qual morte doveva morire. | 33 He said this to show by what death he was to die. |
| 34 Disse a lui la turba: noi abbiamo udito per la legge, che Cristo starà in eterno; adunque come di' tu, ch' egli è di bisogno di esaltare il Figliuolo dell' uomo? Chi è questo ( ch' è) Figliuolo dell' uomo? | 34 The crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains for ever. How can you say that the Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?" |
| 35 Disse a loro Iesù: ancora piccolo lume è in voi; andate mentre che avete la luce, sì che le tenebre non vi comprendano; quello che va nelle tenebre, non sa dove egli vada. | 35 Jesus said to them, "The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. |
| 36 Mentre che voi avete la luce, credete nella luce, acciò che siate figliuoli della luce. Queste cose disse Iesù; e partissi, e nascosesi da loro. | 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said this, he departed and hid himself from them. |
| 37 Avendo adunque egli fatto tanti (meravigliosi) segni in loro presenza, non credevano in lui, | 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him; |
| 38 acciò fosse adempiuto il parlare di Isaia, il quale disse: Signore, chi ha prestato fede al nostro audire? e il braccio del Signore a cui è revelato? | 38 it was that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" |
| 39 E però non potevano credere, imperò [che] ancora disse Isaia: | 39 Therefore they could not believe. For Isaiah again said, |
| 40 egli ha accecato loro occhi, e indurato loro cuori, acciò non vedano con gli occhi e [non] intendano col cuore, e convertansi, e ch' io gli sani. | 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and turn for me to heal them." |
| 41 Queste cose disse Isaia, quando egli vide la gloria sua, e parlò di lui. | 41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him. |
| 42 Ma però molti de' principi credettero in lui; ma non confessavano, per amore de' Farisei, acciò non fussero scacciati dalla sinagoga. | 42 Nevertheless many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: |
| 43 Imperò che amarono la gloria delli uomini maggiormente, che la gloria di Dio. | 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. |
| 44 Onde Iesù poscia gridò, e disse: quello che crede in me, non crede in me ma crede in colui che mi ha mandato. | 44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. |
| 45 E colui lo quale vede me, vede colui che mi mandò. | 45 And he who sees me sees him who sent me. |
| 46 Io luce sono venuto nel mondo, acciò che ogni uomo che in me crede non permanga nelle tenebre. | 46 I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. |
| 47 E se alcuno udirà le parole mie, e non le osservarà, io nol giudico; imperò ch' io non sono venuto per giudicare ii mondo, ma perchè facci salvo il mondo. | 47 If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. |
| 48 Quello che mi scherne, e [non] toglie le parole mie, egli ha cui il giudichi; il parlare ch' io ho parlato, egli giudicarà quello nell' ultimo giorno. | 48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. |
| 49 Conciosia ch' io da medesimo non ho parlato; ma il Padre che mi ha mandato, egli mi ha dato il comandamento, che dirò io, e che parlarò io. | 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. |
| 50 E io so, come il suo comandamento egli è vita eterna. Quelle cose adunque ch' io parlo, come a me disse il Padre, così parlo. | 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me." |
