| 1 Dio de' padri miei, e Signore della misericordia, che con la tua parola facesti tutte le cose, | 1 "O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things by thy word, |
| 2 e con la tua sapienza facesti l'uomo, per ch' elli signoreggiasse le creature le quali sono fatte da te, | 2 and by thy wisdom hast formed man, to have dominion over the creatures thou hast made, |
| 3 e che ordini il mondo in dirittura e in giustizia, e nel dirizzamento del cuore dirizzi il giudicio, | 3 and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul, |
| 4 dàmmi la sapienza, la quale sta presente alle tue sedie, e non mi cacciare dello numero delli tuoi servi. | 4 give me the wisdom that sits by thy throne, and do not reject me from among thy servants. |
| 5 Però ch' io sono tuo servo, e figliuolo della ancilla tua, uomo infermo e di piccolo tempo, e minore (di etade) ad intendimento di giudicio e di legge. | 5 For I am thy slave and the son of thy maidservant, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgment and laws; |
| 6 E se alcuno sarae compiuto uomo tra li figliuoli delli uomini, se da lui fuggirae la sapienza tua, sì fia avuto per nulla. | 6 for even if one is perfect among the sons of men, yet without the wisdom that comes from thee he will be regarded as nothing. |
| 7 Tu mi facesti re del popolo tuo, e giudice de' figliuoli e delle figliuole tue. | 7 Thou hast chosen me to be king of thy people and to be judge over thy sons and daughters. |
| 8 E mandasti che io edificassi il tempio nel tuo santo monte, e che io facessi l'altare nella cittade (in Ierusalem nel tempio) della tua abitazione, l' altare somigliante del tuo santo tabernacolo, lo quale tu apparecchiasti dal principio, | 8 Thou hast given command to build a temple on thy holy mountain, and an altar in the city of thy habitation, a copy of the holy tent which thou didst prepare from the beginning. |
| 9 e con teco la sapienza tua, la quale seppe l'opere tue, e la quale era teco quando tu facevi il mondo, e sapea quello che piace agli occhi tuoi, e quello che è diritto nelli tuoi comandamenti. | 9 With thee is wisdom, who knows thy works and was present when thou didst make the world, and who understand what is pleasing in thy sight and what is right according to thy commandments. |
| 10 Manda lei de' tuoi santi cieli, e della sedia della tua grandezza, sì ch' ella sia meco, e meco s' affatichi, e che io sappia quello che ti sia grato (e piacere). | 10 Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of thy glory send her, that she may be with me and toil, and that I may learn what is pleasing to thee. |
| 11 Ella sae tutte le cose, e intendele; e menerammi temperatamente nell' opere mie, e guarderammi nella sua potenza. | 11 For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory. |
| 12 E le mie opere saranno graziose, e ordineroe il popolo tuo giustamente, e sarò degno delle seggie del padre mio (David). | 12 Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge thy people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father. |
| 13 Or quale uomo potrae sapere il consiglio di Dio? Or chi potrà pensare quello che Iddio vuole? | 13 For what man can learn the counsel of God? Or who can discern what the Lord wills? |
| 14 Li pensieri umani sono timidi, e le nostre providenze sono incerte. | 14 For the reasoning of mortals is worthless, and our designs are likely to fail, |
| 15 Lo corpo, lo quale è corruttibile (e si corrompe), aggrava l' anima; e abitazione terrena abbatte il senno il quale molte cose pensa. | 15 for a perishable body weighs down the soul, and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind. |
| 16 E con fatica estimiamo quelle cose che sono in terra; e quelle cose che sono nel nostro conspetto troviamo con fatica. Or chi investigherae quelle cose che sono in cielo? | 16 We can hardly guess at what is on earth, and what is at hand we find with labor; but who has traced out what is in the heavens? |
| 17 Or chi conoscerae il tuo intendimento, se tu medesimo non darai la sapienza e manderai lo spirito santo tuo dalli cieli altissimi, | 17 Who has learned thy counsel, unless thou hast given wisdom and sent thy holy Spirit from on high? |
| 18 e in questo modo fieno corrette le vie di quelli che sono in terra, e impareranno li uomini queste cose che piacciono a te? | 18 And thus the paths of those on earth were set right, and men were taught what pleases thee, and were saved by wisdom." |
| 19 Però che tutti quelli che dal principio ti piacerono, sì sono sanati per la sapienza. | |
