| 1 (Allora) in quel tempo si levò suso Matatia (sacerdote) figliuolo di Giovanni, figliuolo di Simeone, sacerdote de' figliuoli di Ioarib di Ierusalem, e fermossi nel monte di Modin. | 1 In those days Mattathias the son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, moved from Jerusalem and settled in Modein. |
| 2 Egli avea V figliuoli; il primo avea nome Giovanni, il quale era chiamato Gaddis. | 2 He had five sons, John surnamed Gaddi, |
| 3 Il secondo fu Simeone, chiamato Tasi. | 3 Simon called Thassi, |
| 4 Il terzo fu Giuda, chiamato Maccabeo. | 4 Judas called Maccabeus, |
| 5 Il quarto fu Eleazaro, chiamato Abaron; il quinto fu Ionata, chiamato Appo. | 5 Eleazar called Avaran, and Jonathan called Apphus. |
| 6 Costoro vedevano i grandi mali che si facevano nel popolo de' Giudei e in Ierusalem (e nelli altri luoghi). | 6 He saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem, |
| 7 Onde Matatia disse (loro): ohimè misero, per che ci nacqui io mai per vedere l'abbassamento del popolo mio, e quello della santa cittade, e veggo ch' ella è data in balìa de' nimici? | 7 and said, "Alas! Why was I born to see this, the ruin of my people, the ruin of the holy city, and to dwell there when it was given over to the enemy, the sanctuary given over to aliens? |
| 8 E le sue cose [sante] sono concedute nelle mani delli stranieri; e lo suo tempio è fatto sì come l'uomo mercenaio. | 8 Her temple has become like a man without honor; * |
| 9 E li vasi della sua gloria presi e tramutati sono; i suoi vecchi uomini sono (morti e) uccisi su per le piazze, e li suoi giovani sono abbattuti colle coltella de' suoi nimici. | 9 her glorious vessels have been carried into captivity. Her babes have been killed in her streets, her youths by the sword of the foe. |
| 10 Qual gente è quella che non sia erede del suo regno, e che non abbia le sue ricchezze rubate? | 10 What nation has not inherited her palaces * and has not seized her spoils? |
| 11 E tutto il suo ornamento gli è istato tolto. Ed ella era libera e franca, e sì è divenuta serva e ancilla. | 11 All her adornment has been taken away; no longer free, she has become a slave. |
| 12 Ora adunque (da poi che) le nostre sante cose e la bellezza nostra e la nostra nobile nominanza è distrutta; e le genti l'hanno corrotta. | 12 And behold, our holy place, our beauty, and our glory have been laid waste; the Gentiles have profaned it. |
| 13 A che viviamo noi più? | 13 Why should we live any longer?" |
| 14 Allora Matatia e li suoi figliuoli stracciarono le loro vestimenta; e vestironsi di cilicio, e piansono amaramente. | 14 And Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned greatly. |
| 15 E intanto vi giunsono li ambasciatori del re Antioco, per costrignere coloro ch' erano fuggiti nella cittade di Modin a sacrificare (agl' idoli) e ad accendere incensi e a dipartirsi dalla legge di Dio. | 15 Then the king's officers who were enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to make them offer sacrifice. |
| 16 Avvenne che veramente molti del popolo d' Israel consentendo se n' andarono a loro; ma Matatia e li suoi figliuoli costantemente istettono fermi. | 16 Many from Israel came to them; and Mattathias and his sons were assembled. |
| 17 Onde messaggi e ambasciatori del re Antioco dissono a Matatia: tu se' principe, e molto nominato in questa cittade, e se' grande e ornato di figliuoli e di fratelli. | 17 Then the king's officers spoke to Mattathias as follows: "You are a leader, honored and great in this city, and supported by sons and brothers. |
| 18 Adunque tra' ti inanzi, e tu primaio ubbidisci al comandamento del re Antioco, sì come hanno fatto tutte le genti, e gli uomini (del popolo) de' Giudei, e quegli che sono rimasi in Ierusalem; e tu e li tuoi figliuoli sarete delli amici dello re, e sarai adornato e accresciuto d' oro e d' ariento e di molti altri doni. | 18 Now be the first to come and do what the king commands, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those that are left in Jerusalem have done. Then you and your sons will be numbered among the friends of the king, and you and your sons will be honored with silver and gold and many gifts." |
| 19 Allora rispose Matatia, e disse in alta voce: certo, certo, se tutte le genti ubbidiscono allo re Antioco, e ciascuno si parte dalla ubbidienza della legge de' suoi padri, e consentono al comandamento del re, | 19 But Mattathias answered and said in a loud voice: "Even if all the nations that live under the rule of the king obey him, and have chosen to do his commandments, departing each one from the religion of his fathers, |
| 20 io pure ubbidirò, insieme colli miei figliuoli e fratelli, alla legge de' nostri padri. | 20 yet I and my sons and my brothers will live by the covenant of our fathers. |
| 21 E Iddio ci sia in aiuto; però che a noi non. è utile di abbandonare la legge e le giustizie di Dio. | 21 Far be it from us to desert the law and the ordinances. |
| 22 Noi non intenderemo alle parole del re Antioco, e non sacrificheremo, trapassando li comandamenti della nostra legge, per tenere altra via. | 22 We will not obey the king's words by turning aside from our religion to the right hand or to the left." |
| 23 E si tosto come egli fece fine alle sue parole, sì si trasse inanzi uno Giudeo; e dinanzi agli occhi di tutti coloro fece sacrificio alli idoli sopra l'altare della città di Modin, secondo il comandamento del re Antioco. | 23 When he had finished speaking these words, a Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice upon the altar in Modein, according to the king's command. |
| 24 E vidde questo Matatia, e sì se ne dolse, e aprionsi le sue reni, e accesesi il suo furore secondo il giudicio della legge; e insultando davanti, l'uccise sopra l'altare. | 24 When Mattathias saw it, be burned with zeal and his heart was stirred. He gave vent to righteous anger; he ran and killed him upon the altar. |
| 25 Ancora uccise quello uomo il quale avea mandato il detto re a costrignere di sacrificare; e distrusse l'altare. | 25 At the same time he killed the king's officer who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar. |
| 26 E mostrò d'amare molto teneramente la legge di Dio, come per addietro fece Finees a Zamri figliuolo di Salomi. | 26 Thus he burned with zeal for the law, as Phinehas did against Zimri the son of Salu. |
| 27 E gridòe ad alta voce Matatia nella cittade, e disse: chiunque ama la legge e mantiene il testamento, mi venga dietro. | 27 Then Mattathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: "Let every one who is zealous for the law and supports the covenant come out with me!" |
| 28 Allora si fuggì, egli e li suoi figliuoli, nelli monti; e abbandonarono ciò che loro aveano nella cittade. | 28 And he and his sons fled to the hills and left all that they had in the city. |
| 29 Allora fu egli seguitato da molti, i quali andarono dopo lui nello deserto, desiderando di vivere secondo la giustizia e le ragioni della legge. | 29 Then many who were seeking righteousness and justice went down to the wilderness to dwell there, |
| 30 E ivi stettono loro, e li loro figliuoli, e le loro donne, e le loro pecore; però che molti mali erano indurati sopra loro. | 30 they, their sons, their wives, and their cattle, because evils pressed heavily upon them. |
| 31 E annunziato fue agli uomini del re (Antioco), e allo esercito che era in Ierusalem, città di David, come alquanti uomini s' erano ricolti nel deserto, i quali aveano dispregiato li comandamenti del re, ed erano in luoghi celati, e molti gli aveano seguiti. | 31 And it was reported to the king's officers, and to the troops in Jerusalem the city of David, that men who had rejected the king's command had gone down to the hiding places in the wilderness. |
| 32 Dond' è che loro incontanente andarono loro addosso, e commisono battaglia incontro a loro il die del sabbato. | 32 Many pursued them, and overtook them; they encamped opposite them and prepared for battle against them on the sabbath day. |
| 33 E dissono loro: dunque ancora vi ribellate? uscite fuori, e ubbidite al comandamento del re e viverete. | 33 And they said to them, "Enough of this! Come out and do what the king commands, and you will live." |
| 34 E quegli rispuosono: noi non usciremo fuori, e non ubbidiremo al comandamento del re, per corrompere il di del sabbato. | 34 But they said, "We will not come out, nor will we do what the king commands and so profane the sabbath day." |
| 35 Allora commisono battaglia contro a loro. | 35 Then the enemy * hastened to attack them. |
| 36 Ma loro non si difesono; ma una pietra solamente non gittarono contro a loro (e non chiusono la porta) e non armarono i celati luoghi, | 36 But they did not answer them or hurl a stone at them or block up their hiding places, |
| 37 dicendo: moiamo nella nostra simplicitade; e siano nostri testimoni il cielo e la terra, che voi ingiustamente noi uccidete. | 37 for they said, "Let us all die in our innocence; heaven and earth testify for us that you are killing us unjustly." |
| 38 E così combatterono (quegli del re) contro a loro in sabbato; e furono morti loro e le loro donne. e li loro figliuoli e il loro bestiame (si se ne menarono); e morirono (delle genti di Giuda) nel torno di mille persone. | 38 So they attacked them on the sabbath, and they died, with their wives and children and cattle, to the number of a thousand persons. |
| 39 E quando Matatia e gli altri suoi amici il seppono, molto se ne dolsono, e fècionne grande pianto. | 39 When Mattathias and his friends learned of it, they mourned for them deeply. |
| 40 Allora costoro incominciarono a dire l' uno. all' altro: se noi faremo così come feciono li nostri fratelli, e non combatteremo contro a' nostri nemici per l'anime nostre e per le nostre ragioni, tostamente ci leveranno di terra. | 40 And each said to his neighbor: "If we all do as our brethren have done and refuse to fight with the Gentiles for our lives and for our ordinances, they will quickly destroy us from the earth." |
| 41 E allora propuosono e fermarono in quel dì di combattere contro a chi venisse incontro a loro, e di non rifiutare la battaglia il dì del sabbato, dicendo: combattiamo, acciò che noi non moiamo tutti sì come feciono li nostri fratelli per li luoghi nascosi. | 41 So they made this decision that day: "Let us fight against every man who comes to attack us on the sabbath day; let us not all die as our brethren died in their hiding places." |
| 42 Allora si radunarono con loro la sinagoga degli Assidei, uomini valenti e pieni di forza, e voluntarosi di mantenere la legge. | 42 Then there united with them a company of Hasideans, mighty warriors of Israel, every one who offered himself willingly for the law. |
| 43 E aggiunsono con loro tutti quelli che fuggivano li peccati; e fecionsi con loro più forti. | 43 And all who became fugitives to escape their troubles joined them and reinforced them. |
| 44 Loro radunarono oste, e percossono li peccatori nella ira, e li uomini malvagi nella loro indegnazione; e gli altri fuggirono alle nazioni per iscampare. | 44 They organized an army, and struck down sinners in their anger and lawless men in their wrath; the survivors fled to the Gentiles for safety. |
| 45 E attorniò Matatia con li amici suoi (tutto il paese); e distrussono gli altari (de' pagani nella loro fortezza). | 45 And Mattathias and his friends went about and tore down the altars; |
| 46 Circoncisono tutti e' fanciulli non circoncisi, quanti ne trovarono nel popolo d' Israel. | 46 they forcibly circumcised all the uncircumcised boys that they found within the borders of Israel. |
| 47 E perseguitarono i figliuoli della superbia; e fue vittoriosa l'opera nelle loro mani. | 47 They hunted down the arrogant men, and the work prospered in their hands. |
| 48 Ed estrassono la legge delle mani delle genti, e delle potenze delli regni, e non consentirono al peccato. | 48 They rescued the law out of the hands of the Gentiles and kings, and they never let the sinner gain the upper hand. |
| 49 E approssimandosi il dì della morte di Matatia, egli disse alli suoi figliuoli: ora è confortata la superbia (del re Antioco) e la guastagione (nostra per li nostri peccati) e il tempo della sovversione (del culto divino) e l'ira della indegnazione (di Dio). | 49 Now the days drew near for Mattathias to die, and he said to his sons: "Arrogance and reproach have now become strong; it is a time of ruin and furious anger. |
| 50 E però, figliuoli miei, siate amatori della legge (di Dio), e ponete l' anime vostre per difensione del testamento de' padri. | 50 Now, my children, show zeal for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of our fathers. |
| 51 E ricordatevi delle opere loro, le quali egli facevano nelle loro (etadi e) generazioni; e acquisterete gloria e fama perpetua. | 51 "Remember the deeds of the fathers, which they did in their generations; and receive great honor and an everlasting name. |
| 52 Or non fue trovato Abraam fedele nella tentazione, e riputato gli fu a giustizia? | 52 Was not Abraham found faithful when tested, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness? |
| 53 E Iosef nel tempo della sua tribulazione guardò il comandamento (di Dio), e divenne signore di Egitto. | 53 Joseph in the time of his distress kept the commandment, and became lord of Egypt. |
| 54 Finees, nostro padre, mostrando tenero amore alla legge di Dio, ricevette testamento di sacerdozio eterno. | 54 Phinehas our father, because he was deeply zealous, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood. |
| 55 Isue, ubbidendo alla parola di Dio, divenne duca in Israel. | 55 Joshua, because he fulfilled the command, became a judge in Israel. |
| 56 Caleb, testimoniando (la veritade) nella chiesa, ricevette ereditade. | 56 Caleb, because he testified in the assembly, received an inheritance in the land. |
| 57 David nella sua misericordia acquistòe seggio di reame perpetuo. | 57 David, because he was merciful, inherited the throne of the kingdom for ever. |
| 58 Elia, amando fortemente il fervore della legge, fu ricevuto in cielo. | 58 Elijah because of great zeal for the law was taken up into heaven. |
| 59 Anania, Azaria e Misael, credendo (fermamente), furono liberati della fiamma. | 59 Hannaniah, Azariah, and Mishael believed and were saved from the flame. |
| 60 Daniel nella sua puritade fu liberato dalla bocca de' leoni. | 60 Daniel because of his innocence was delivered from the mouth of the lions. |
| 61 E così pensate per generazioni e per etadi; chè chiunque spera in Dio non viene meno. | 61 "And so observe, from generation to generation, that none who put their trust in him will lack strength. |
| 62 E però non temete delle parole de' peccatori; perciò che la gloria loro è bruttura e vermini. | 62 Do not fear the words of a sinner, for his splendor will turn into dung and worms. |
| 63 Oggi si insuperbisce il peccatore, e domani non si ritrova; imperciò che già è tornato in terra, e lo suo pensiero tornato è a niente. | 63 Today he will be exalted, but tomorrow he will not be found, because he has returned to the dust, and his plans will perish. |
| 64 Voi adunque, figliuoli miei, confortatevi, e valentemente adoperate nella legge; imperò che (facendo quelle cose le quali vi sono comandate nella legge dal nostro Signore Iddio) in quella sarete gloriosi. | 64 My children, be courageous and grow strong in the law, for by it you will gain honor. |
| 65 E però ecco Simone, vostro fratello; imperò ch' io so ch' egli è uomo di consiglio, uditelo continuamente, ed egli vi fia padre. | 65 "Now behold, I know that Simeon your brother is wise in counsel; always listen to him; he shall be your father. |
| 66 Ma Giuda Maccabeo, uomo prode e forte insino dalla sua gioventù, sia principe (della vostra guerra e) della vostra cavalleria; ed egli faccia la battaglia del popolo. | 66 Judas Maccabeus has been a mighty warrior from his youth; he shall command the army for you and fight the battle against the peoples. * |
| 67 E radunerete con voi tutti i seguitatori della legge; e fate vendetta del vostro popolo. | 67 You shall rally about you all who observe the law, and avenge the wrong done to your people. |
| 68 E rendete degno merito alle genti, e intendete ne' comandamenti della legge. | 68 Pay back the Gentiles in full, and heed what the law commands." |
| 69 E poi gli benedisse, e allora morì Matatia, e fue posto cogli altri suoi padri | 69 Then he blessed them, and was gathered to his fathers. |
| 70 nel CXLVI anno (del regno de' Greci); e fue seppellito da' suoi figliuoli nella cittade di Modin nel sepolcro de' suoi padri; e tutta la gente d' Israel lo piansono con grandissimo lamento. | 70 He died in the one hundred and forty-sixth year * and was buried in the tomb of his fathers at Modein. And all Israel mourned for him with great lamentation. |
