And having entered, he walked through Jericho.1 He came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. And he was the leader of the tax collectors, and he was wealthy.2 Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
And he sought to see Jesus, to see who he was. But he was unable to do so, because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.3 was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.
And running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree, so that he might see him. For he was to pass near there.4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.
And when he had arrived at the place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and he said to him: “Zacchaeus, hurry down. For today, I should lodge in your house.”5 When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house."
And hurrying, he came down, and he received him joyfully.6 And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
And when they all saw this, they murmured, saying that he had turned aside to a sinful man.7 When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner."
But Zacchaeus, standing still, said to the Lord: “Behold, Lord, one half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone in any matter, I will repay him fourfold.”8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over."
Jesus said to him: “Today, salvation has come to this house; because of this, he too is a son of Abraham.9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of man has come to seek and to save what had been lost.”10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost."
As they were listening to these things, continuing on, he spoke a parable, because he was nearing Jerusalem, and because they guessed that the kingdom of God might be manifested without delay.11 While they were listening to him speak, he proceeded to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God would appear there immediately.
Therefore, he said: “A certain man of nobility traveled to a far away region, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.12 So he said, "A nobleman went off to a distant country to obtain the kingship for himself and then to return.
And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds, and he said to them: ‘Do business until I return.’13 He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, 'Engage in trade with these until I return.'
But his citizens hated him. And so they sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this one to reign over us.’14 His fellow citizens, however, despised him and sent a delegation after him to announce, 'We do not want this man to be our king.'
And it happened that he returned, having received the kingdom. And he ordered the servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called so that he would know how much each one had earned by doing business.15 But when he returned after obtaining the kingship, he had the servants called, to whom he had given the money, to learn what they had gained by trading.
Now the first approached, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned ten pounds.’16 The first came forward and said, 'Sir, your gold coin has earned ten additional ones.'
And he said to him: ‘Well done, good servant. Since you have been faithful in a small matter, you will hold authority over ten cities.’17 He replied, 'Well done, good servant! You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities.'
And the second came, saying: ‘Lord, your one pound has earned five pounds.’18 Then the second came and reported, 'Your gold coin, sir, has earned five more.'
And he said to him, ‘And so, you shall be over five cities.’19 And to this servant too he said, 'You, take charge of five cities.'
And another approached, saying: ‘Lord, behold your one pound, which I kept stored in a cloth.20 Then the other servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your gold coin; I kept it stored away in a handkerchief,
For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.’21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding person; you take up what you did not lay down and you harvest what you did not plant.'
He said to him: ‘By your own mouth, do I judge you, O wicked servant. You knew that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow.22 He said to him, 'With your own words I shall condemn you, you wicked servant. You knew I was a demanding person, taking up what I did not lay down and harvesting what I did not plant;
And so, why did you not give my money to the bank, so that, upon my return, I might have withdrawn it with interest?’23 why did you not put my money in a bank? Then on my return I would have collected it with interest.'
And he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the pound away from him, and give it to him who has ten pounds.’24 And to those standing by he said, 'Take the gold coin from him and give it to the servant who has ten.'
And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten pounds.’25 But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten gold coins.'
So then, I say to you, that to all who have, it shall be given, and he will have in abundance. And from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.26 'I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
‘Yet truly, as for those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and put them to death before me.’ ”27 Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me.'"
And having said these things, he went ahead, ascending to Jerusalem.28 After he had said this, he proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem.
And it happened that, when he had drawn near to Bethphage and Bethania, to the mount which is called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples,29 As he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples.
saying: “Go into the town which is opposite you. Upon entering it, you will find the colt of a donkey, tied, on which no man has ever sat. Untie it, and lead it here.30 He said, "Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
And if anyone will ask you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this to him: ‘Because the Lord has requested its service.’ ”31 And if anyone should ask you, 'Why are you untying it?' you will answer, 'The Master has need of it.'"
And those who were sent went out, and they found the colt standing, just as he told them.32 So those who had been sent went off and found everything just as he had told them.
Then, as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying this colt?"
So they said, “Because the Lord has need of it.”34 They answered, "The Master has need of it."
And they led it to Jesus. And casting their garments on the colt, they helped Jesus onto it.35 So they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to mount.
Then, as he was traveling, they were laying down their garments along the way.36 As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road;
And when he was now drawing near to the descent of Mount Olivet, the entire crowd of his disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, over all the powerful works which they had seen,37 and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen.
saying: “Blessed is the king who has arrived in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory on high!”38 They proclaimed: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest."
And certain Pharisees within the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."
And he said to them, “I tell you, that if these will keep silent, the stones themselves will cry out.”40 He said in reply, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!"
And when he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying:41 As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it,
“If only you had known, indeed even in this your day, which things are for your peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes.42 saying, "If this day you only knew what makes for peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes.
For the days will overtake you. And your enemies will encircle you with a valley. And they will surround you and hem you in on every side.43 For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
And they will knock you down to the ground, with your sons who are in you. And they will not leave stone upon stone within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”44 They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
And entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold in it, and those who bought,45 Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things,
saying to them: “It is written: ‘My house is a house of prayer.’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.”46 saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.'"
And he was teaching in the temple daily. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking to destroy him.47 And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death,
But they could not find what to do to him. For all the people were listening to him attentively.48 but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.
