Efesios 5

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Traten de imitar a Dios, como hijos suyos muy queridos.	1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern,
2 Practiquen el amor, a ejemplo de Cristo, que nos amó y se entregó por nosotros, como ofrenda y sacrificio agradable a Dios.	2 and fol ow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up for us as an offering and a sweet-smel ingsacrifice to God.
3 En cuanto al pecado carnal y cualquier clase de impureza o avaricia, ni siquiera se los mencione entre ustedes, como conviene a los santos.	3 Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:this would scarcely become the holy people of God!
4 Lo mismo digo acerca de las obscenidades, de las malas conversaciones y de las bromas groseras: todo esto está fuera de lugar. Lo que deben hacer es dar gracias a Dios.	4 There must be no foul or salacious talk or coarse jokes -- al this is wrong for you; there should ratherbe thanksgiving.
5 Y sépanlo bien: ni el hombre lujurioso, ni el impuro, ni el avaro –que es un idólatra– tendrán parte en la herencia del Reino de Cristo y de Dios.	5 For you can be quite certain that nobody who indulges in sexual immorality or impurity or greed -- whichis worshipping a false god -- can inherit the kingdom of God.
6 No se dejen engañar por falsas razones: todo eso atrae la ira de Dios sobre los que se resisten a obedecerle.	6 Do not let anyone deceive you with empty arguments: it is such behaviour that draws down God'sretribution on those who rebel against him.
7 No se hagan cómplices de los que obran así!	7 Make sure that you do not throw in your lot with them.
8 Antes, ustedes eran tinieblas, pero ahora son luz en el Señor. Vivan como hijos de la luz.	8 You were darkness once, but now you are light in the Lord; behave as children of light,
9 Ahora bien, el fruto de la luz es la bondad, la justicia y la verdad.	9 for the effects of the light are seen in complete goodness and uprightness and truth.
10 Sepan discernir lo que agrada al Señor,	10 Try to discover what the Lord wants of you,
11 y no participen de las obras estériles de las tinieblas; al contrario, pónganlas en evidencia.	11 take no part in the futile works of darkness but, on the contrary, show them up for what they are.
12 Es verdad que resulta vergonzoso aun mencionar las cosas que esa gente hace ocultamente.	12 The things which are done in secret are shameful even to speak of;
13 Pero cuando se las pone de manifiesto, aparecen iluminadas por la luz,	13 but anything shown up by the light wil be il uminated
14 porque todo lo que se pone de manifiesto es luz. Por eso se dice: Despiértate, tú que duermes, levántate de entre los muertos, y Cristo te iluminará.	14 and anything illuminated is itself a light. That is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead,and Christ wil shine on you.
15 Cuiden mucho su conducta y no procedan como necios, sino como personas sensatas	15 So be very careful about the sort of lives you lead, like intel igent and not like senseless people.
16 que saben aprovechar bien el momento presente, porque estos tiempos son malos.	16 Make the best of the present time, for it is a wicked age.
17 No sean irresponsables, sino traten de saber cuál es la voluntad del Señor.	17 This is why you must not be thoughtless but must recognise what is the will of the Lord.
18 No abusen del vino que lleva al libertinaje; más bien, llénense del Espíritu Santo.	18 Do not get drunk with wine; this is simply dissipation; be fil ed with the Spirit.
19 Cuando se reúnan, reciten salmos, himnos y cantos espirituales, cantando y celebrando al Señor de todo corazón.	19 Sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs among yourselves, singing and chanting to the Lord inyour hearts,
20 Siempre y por cualquier motivo, den gracias a Dios, nuestro Padre, en nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.	20 always and everywhere giving thanks to God who is our Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
21 Sométanse los unos a los otros, por consideración a Cristo.	21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Las mujeres deben respetar a su marido como al Señor,	22 Wives should be subject to their husbands as to the Lord,
23 porque el varón es la cabeza de la mujer, como Cristo es la Cabeza y el Salvador de la Iglesia, que es su Cuerpo.	23 since, as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife;
24 Así como la Iglesia está sometida a Cristo, de la misma manera las mujeres deben respetar en todo a su marido.	24 and as the Church is subject to Christ, so should wives be to their husbands, in everything.
25 Maridos, amen a su esposa, como Cristo amó a la Iglesia y se entregó por ella,	25 Husbands should love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her
26 para santificarla. El la purificó con el bautismo del agua y la palabra,	26 to make her holy by washing her in cleansing water with a form of words,
27 porque quiso para sí una Iglesia resplandeciente, sin mancha ni arruga y sin ningún defecto, sino santa e inmaculada.	27 so that when he took the Church to himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless.
28 Del mismo modo, los maridos deben amar a su mujer como a su propio cuerpo. El que ama a su esposa se ama a sí mismo.	28 In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies; for a man to love hiswife is for him to love himself.
29 Nadie menosprecia a su propio cuerpo, sino que lo alimenta y lo cuida. Así hace Cristo por la Iglesia,	29 A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it; and that is the way Christ treats theChurch,
30 por nosotros, que somos los miembros de su Cuerpo.	30 because we are parts of his Body.
31 Por eso, el hombre dejará a su padre y a su madre para unirse a su mujer, y los dos serán una sola carne.	31 This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the twobecome one flesh.
32 Este es un gran misterio: y yo digo que se refiere a Cristo y a la Iglesia.	32 This mystery has great significance, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church.
33 En cuanto a ustedes, cada uno debe amar a su mujer como así mismo, y la esposa debe respetar a su marido.	33 To sum up: you also, each one of you, must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wiferespect her husband.
