1 Ma fatto che fu giorno, li principi de' sacerdoti e li antiqui del popolo feceno il consiglio contra di Iesù, per darli morte.	1 When morning came, al the chief priests and the elders of the people met in council to bring about thedeath of Jesus.
2 E legoronlo per menarlo a Ponzio Pilato, rettore.	2 They had him bound and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor.
3 Allora avvedendosi Iuda, che l' avea tradito e ch' era dannato, vedendo il male che aveva fatto, riportò li trenta denari d'argento alli principi dei sacerdoti e alli antiqui del popolo.	3 When he found that Jesus had been condemned, then Judas, his betrayer, was fil ed with remorse andtook the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders
4 E disse a loro: io ho peccato, tradendo il sangue giusto. E loro dissero che v'abbiamo a fare noi? Tu te 'l vederai.	4 saying, 'I have sinned. I have betrayed innocent blood.' They replied, 'What is that to us? That is yourconcern.'
5 Ed egli allora gittò li denari nel tempio; e partissi, e impiccossi con uno capestro.	5 And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off, and went and hanged himself.
6 Allora li principi de' sacerdoti preseno quelli denari, e dissero: non è lecito a noi di ponergli nella cassa, imperò ch' è prezzo di sangue.	6 The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, 'It is against the Law to put this into the treasury;it is blood-money.'
7 Ma fecero il consiglio, e comprorono di quelli denari uno campo di terra, per sepoltura de' peregrini.	7 So they discussed the matter and with it bought the potter's field as a graveyard for foreigners,
8 E per questo è chiamato quello campo ACELDAMA, cioè campo di sangue, insino al giorno d'oggi.	8 and this is why the field is stil cal ed the Field of Blood.
9 E allora si adempì quello che avea detto il profeta Ieremia: egli preseno li trenta denari d'argento, prezzo dell' apprezzato, il qual a sè apprezzarono li figliuoli d'Israel;	9 The word spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was then fulfil ed: And they took the thirty silverpieces, the sum at which the precious One was priced by the children of Israel,
10 e dettero quel prezzo in campo della terra, sì come ordinò a me il Signore.	10 and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me.
11 E Iesù stava dinanzi al rettore; e addomandando Pilato, li disse: se' tu re de' Iudei? Disse a lui Iesù tu l' hai detto.	11 Jesus, then, was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question, 'Are you theking of the Jews?' Jesus replied, 'It is you who say it.'
12 Ed essendo accusato dagli antiqui del popepolo, e da' principi de' sacerdoti, nulla rispose.	12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders he refused to answer at al .
13 Allora disse Pilato: non odi tu, quanti testimonii dicono contra di te?	13 Pilate then said to him, 'Do you not hear how many charges they have made against you?'
14 E Iesù non rispose parola; onde molto si maravigliò Pilato.	14 But to the governor's amazement, he offered not a word in answer to any of the charges.
15 Era usanza per lo giorno solenne (della pasqua), che soleva la signoria donare al popolo uno prigione, qualunque volevano.	15 At festival time it was the governor's practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose.
16 Era allora in prigione uno uomo che avea nome Barabba, il quale era omicida e ladro.	16 Now there was then a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas.
17 E radunati che furono li Judei, disse a loro Pilato qual volete voi ch' io vi lasci? o Barabba, o Jesù ch' è chiamato Cristo?	17 So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, 'Which do you want me to release for you:Barabbas, or Jesus who is cal ed Christ?'
18 Perchè Pilato sapeva che per invidia l' avevano tradito.	18 For Pilate knew it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over.
19 Sedendo Pilato per il tribunale (in sedia), mandogli a dire la moglie: tu non hai a fare nulla di questo uomo giusto; e io ho sostenuto in visione per lui molta pena.	19 Now as he was seated in the chair of judgement, his wife sent him a message, 'Have nothing to dowith that upright man; I have been extremely upset today by a dream that I had about him.'
20 Allora li principi de' sacerdoti e li antiqui mandorono a dire al popolo, che chiamasseno Barabba, e uccidesseno Cristo.	20 The chief priests and the elders, however, had persuaded the crowd to demand the release ofBarabbas and the execution of Jesus.
21 Rispose allora Pilato, e disse: quale volete ch' io vi lasci di questi due? Ed egli dissero: Barabba.	21 So when the governor spoke and asked them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release for you?'they said, 'Barabbas.'
22 Disse allora Pilato: che farò io di Jesù che è chiamato Cristo?	22 Pilate said to them, 'But in that case, what am I to do with Jesus who is cal ed Christ?' They al said,'Let him be crucified!'
23 Dissero tutti: sia crocifisso. Disse a loro Pilato: che male ha egli fatto? Ma quegli pure gridavano: sia crocifisso.	23 He asked, 'But what harm has he done?' But they shouted all the louder, 'Let him be crucified!'
24 Vedendo Pilato, che non giovava nulla il suo dire, anzi più rumore facevano, fecesi dare l'acqua alle mani, e lavossi dinanzi al popolo, e disse: io sono innocente del sangue di questo giusto, e voi il vedete.	24 Then Pilate saw that he was making no impression, that in fact a riot was imminent. So he took somewater, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, 'I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your concern.'
25 Rispose l'università del popolo, e disse: il sangue suo sia sopra di noi, e sopra li figliuoli nostri.	25 And the people, every one of them, shouted back, 'Let his blood be on us and on our children!'
26 Allora Pilato lasciò a loro Barabba; e detteli Jesù, tutto flagellato, acciò che (egli stessi) il crucifigessero.	26 Then he released Barabbas for them. After having Jesus scourged he handed him over to becrucified.
27 Allora li cavalieri di Pilato presero Jesù, e menoronlo nel luogo dove si davano le sentenze, e con loro radunorono tutta la famiglia.	27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and col ected the whole cohortround him.
28 E spoglioronlo della sua vestimenta, e puosenli indosso una vestimenta di porpora.	28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet cloak round him,
29 E puosongli in capo una corona di spini, e una canna nella mano diritta; e inginocchiavansi dinanzi a lui, e dicevano schernendolo: Dio ti salvi, re de' Judei.	29 and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his righthand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
30 E sputavangli adosso, e percotevangli con la canna nel suo capo.	30 And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it.
31 E poi che l'ebbeno schernito, li trasseno quello vestimento; e remisongli le vestimenta sue, e menoronlo a crucifigerlo.	31 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his ownclothes and led him away to crucifixion.
32 E menandolo, trovorono uno uomo che aveva nome Simone, Cireneo, (il quale veniva dalla villa); il quale egli preseno, e puosongli adosso la croce che portava adosso Jesù,	32 On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, cal ed Simon, and enlisted him to carry hiscross.
33 insino che giungessero a quel luogo che si dice Golgota, il qual è nel monte Calvario.	33 When they had reached a place cal ed Golgotha, that is, the place of the skul ,
34 E dettonli bevere vino mescolato con fiele; e gustandolo, non volse bevere.	34 they gave him wine to drink mixed with gal , which he tasted but refused to drink.
35 E poi che l' ebbero crucifisso, divisero le sue vestimenta, mettendo le sorti, acciò che si adempisse quello che avea detto il profeta: (allora) divisero le mie vestimenta, e sopra di esse posero le sorti.	35 When they had finished crucifying him they shared out his clothing by casting lots,
36 Sedevano, e guardavanlo.	36 and then sat down and stayed there keeping guard over him.
37 E poseno sopra il suo capo la cagione perchè l'avevano crucifisso, dicendo: QUESTO È JESU NAZARENO RE DE' Iudei.	37 Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: 'This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.'
38 E crucifissero con lui due ladroni, l'uno dal lato manco, e l'altro dal lato diritto.	38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
39 E molti che passavano innanzi a lui, il biastemavano, e menavano il capo.	39 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads
40 E dicevano: va, tu che dicevi di distruggere il tempio di Dio, e in tre giorni lo dovevi rifare, salva te medesimo; e se tu sei figliuolo di Dio, discendi della croce.	40 and said, 'So you would destroy the Temple and in three days rebuild it! Then save yourself if you areGod's son and come down from the cross!'
41 E simigliantemente li principi de' sacerdoti, e li Scribi con li antiqui del popolo, lo schernivano dicendo:	41 The chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him in the same way,
42 Gli altri ha fatto salvi, e sè medesimo non può salvare; e se è re d' Israel, discenda della croce, e crederemogli.	42 with the words, 'He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come downfrom the cross now, and we wil believe in him.
43 S'egli ha confidanza in Dio, liberilo Iddio s'egli vuole; imperò che disse, ch' era figliuolo di Dio.	43 He has put his trust in God; now let God rescue him if he wants him. For he did say, "I am God'sson." '
44 E quel medesimo, il ladrone ch' era allato lui, l'improbava.	44 Even the bandits who were crucified with him taunted him in the same way.
45 E in su l'ora di sesta tutto l'universo diventò tenebroso, e durò insino all'ora di nona.	45 From the sixth hour there was darkness over al the land until the ninth hour.
46 E circa l'ora di nona mandò Jesù una grande voce, e disse: ELI, ELI, LAMMA SABACTANI? cioè: Dio mio, Dio mio, perchè m' hai abbandonato?	46 And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
47 E molti che erano lì, dicevano: questo chiama Elia. (Stiamo a vedere, se viene per liberarlo).	47 When some of those who stood there heard this, they said, 'The man is cal ing on Elijah,'
48 E incontinente corse uno, e prese una spugna sopra una canna, e detteli con essa bevere [aceto].	48 and one of them quickly ran to get a sponge which he fil ed with vinegar and, putting it on a reed,gave it him to drink.
49 E anche alquanti dicevano: lasciate stare, ora vediamo se Elia verrà per liberarlo.	49 But the rest of them said, 'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to save him.'
50 E Jesù un' altra volta gridò ad alta voce, e (disse: Padre nelle tue mani raccomando lo spirito mio, e cosî dicendo) spirò fuori lo spirito.	50 But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
51 Allora il velo del tempio si divise in due parti, dal capo insino al piede, e tutta la terra si commosse, e le pietre si aperseno.	51 And suddenly, the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, therocks were split,
52 E aperti sono li monumenti; e molti corpi di santi, ch' erano morti, suscitorono,	52 the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy people rose from the dead,
53 e uscirono de' monumenti; li quali dopo la sua resurrezione vennero nella città santa, e apparirono a molti.	53 and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the holy city and appeared to anumber of people.
54 Ma Centurione, e quelli ch' erano con lui, che guardavano Jesù, veduto il terremoto e quelle altre cose, dubitorono molto, e dissero: veramente questo era figliuolo di Dio.	54 The centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and al that wastaking place, and they were terrified and said, 'In truth this man was son of God.'
55 Erano ivi molte femine, che stavano dalla lunga, le quali avevano seguitato Jesù insino da Galilea, servendolo.	55 And many women were there, watching from a distance, the same women who had followed Jesusfrom Galilee and looked after him.
56 Infra quelle era Maria Maddalena, e Maria di Jacobo e di Josef madre, e la madre delli figliuoli di Zebedeo.	56 Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother ofZebedee's sons.
57 Ed essendo fatto sera, uno uomo ricco da Arimatea, il quale avea nome Josef, il quale era discepolo di Jesù,	57 When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, cal ed Joseph, who had himself becomea disciple of Jesus.
58 andò a Pilato, e domando'li il corpo di Jesù. Allora Pilato comandò gli fosse dato.	58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over.
59 E preso ch' ebbe Josef il corpo di Jesù, involtollo in uno lenzuolo nuovo.	59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud
60 E puoselo in uno monumento nuovo, il quale era stato tagliato in una pietra; e di sopra la porta del monumento gli puose uno grande sasso, e partissi.	60 and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a large stoneacross the entrance of the tomb and went away.
61 Era ivi Maria Maddalena, e l'altra Maria, che sedevano a lato al sepolcro.	61 Now Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
62 E l'altro giorno radunoronsi insieme li prìncipi de' sacerdoti e Farisei, e andorono da Pilato.	62 Next day, that is, when Preparation Day was over, the chief priests and the Pharisees went in a bodyto Pilate
63 E dissero: signore, noi ci siamo ricordati che quell' ingannatore, quando egli viveva, disse che dopo tre giorni egli resusciterebbe.	63 and said to him, 'Your Excel ency, we recal that this impostor said, while he was still alive, "Afterthree days I shall rise again."
64 Comanda adunque che il sepolcro sia guardato insino al terzo giorno, acciò che non vengano li discepoli suoi, e l'involasseno, e poi dicessero al popolo, ch' egli è resuscitato da morte; imperò che sarebbe l'ultimo errore peggiore che il primo.	64 Therefore give the order to have the sepulchre kept secure until the third day, for fear his disciplescome and steal him away and tel the people, "He has risen from the dead." This last piece of fraud would beworse than what went before.'
65 Disse Pilato: tollete le guardie, e guardatelo.	65 Pilate said to them, 'You may have your guard; go and make al as secure as you know how.'
66 Ed egli andorono (con le guardie) al sepolcro, e sigilloronlo, e li puosero le guardie.	66 So they went and made the sepulchre secure, putting seals on the stone and mounting a guard.
