1 E abito Iacob nella terra Canaan, nella quale peregrinò lo padre suo.	1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2 E queste sono le generazioni sue: Iosef, quando era di XVI anni, pasceva la greggia colli fratelli suoi, essendo anche putto; ed era con li figliuoli di Bala e Zelfa mogli del padre suo; e accusoe li fratelli suoi dinanzi al padre di pessimo peccato.	2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
3 Ma Israel amava Iosef sopra tutti i figliuoli suoi, perciò che nella vecchiezza l'avea generato; e fecegli una gonnella lavorata di varii colori.	3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
4 Va veggendo li fratelli suoi, che dal padre più che tutti gli altri era amato, sì l'aveano in odio, nè non poteano favellare a lui alcuna cosa pacificamente.	4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
5 E in verità intervenne che egli disse a' fratelli suoi uno sogno, il quale a lui parea avere veduto; la quale cosa fue cagione del seme del maggiore odio.	5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
6 E disse a loro: udite lo sogno mio, ch' io viddi.	6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
7 Parevami che noi legavamo li manipoli nel campo; e parevami che il mio manipolo si levasse ritto e stesse fermo; e i vostri manipoli, stanti dintorno, adoravano lo mio manipolo.	7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8 Respuosero li fratelli suoi: or sarai tu nostro re? o vero che noi saremo sottoposti alla tua signoria? Questa cagione adunque de'sogni e delle parole apparecchioe la fonte della invidia e dell' odio.	8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9 E ancora vidde un altro sogno; il quale nun ciatolo ai fratelli suoi, disse: io viddi per sogno, quasi lo sole e la luna e undici stelle che mi adoravano.	9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10 La quale cosa quando al padre suo e a fratelli suoi reveloe, si lo riprese il padre suo, e disse: che vuole dire questo sogno che tu hai veduto? Dunque io, la madre tua e li fratelli tuoi adoreremo te sopra la terra?	10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
11 E per questo invidiavanlo li fratelli suoi: ma lo padre tacitamente la cosa considerava.	11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
12 E conciosia cosa che i fratelli suoi istessero in Sichem a pascere le gregge del padre,	12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
13 disse a lui Israel: li fratelli tuoi pascono le pecore nelle parti di Sichem; vieni, ch' io mandi te a loro. Il quale rispondendo,	13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
14 disse; presto sono. E disse a lui lo padre: va, e vedi se tutte le cose sono prospere contro ai fratelli tuoi e le bestie, e rinuncia a me quello che si fa. Mandato della valle di Ebron, venne in Sichem.	14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15 E trovoe lui uno uomo, ch' egli andava di qua e di là per il campo; e domandollo, (ov'egli andava, e che) andava cercando.	15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
16 E egli respuose: li fratelli miei addomando; dillo a me, ove pascono le gregge.	16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
17 E disse a lui l'uomo: egli si partirono di questo luogo, e io udii loro, dicenti: andiamo in Dotain. E andò Iosef dopo i fratelli suoi, e trovò loro in Dotain.	17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
18 I quali, quando viddero lui dalla lunga, innanzi ch' egli venisse a loro, pensarono d'ucciderlo.	18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
19 E chetamente favellavano, e dicevano: ecco lo sognatore viene.	19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
20 Venite, uccidiamolo e mettiamolo in questa cisterna vecchia; e diremo al padre nostro, che una pessima bestia l'abbia divorato; e allora apparirà, quanto gli facciano prode i sogni suoi.	20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
21 Questa cosa vedendo Ruben, si sforzava di liberare lui (delle menti e) delle mani loro, e dicea:	21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
22 Non uccidiamo l'anima sua, e non ispandiamo lo sangue suo; ma gettate lui in questa cisterna vecchia, la quale è nel deserto, e le mani vostre servate non colpevoli. Questo in verità dicea, volendo camparlo delle mani loro per rimenarlo allo padre suo.	22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
23 E incontanente ch' egli giunse a'suoi fratelli, sì gli spogliarono la gonnella nuova, lavorata di varii colori.	23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;
24 E miserlo nella cisterna, la quale non avea acqua.	24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
25 E sedendo per mangiare del pane, viddero i viandanti Ismaeliti venire di Galaad, e li cammelli loro portanti aromata e resina, andanti in Egitto.	25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26 Disse adunque Iuda ai fratelli suoi: che prode fa a noi, se noi uccidiamo lo fratello nostro, e celaremo lo sangue suo?	26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
27 Meglio è che si venda alli Ismaeliti, e le mani nostre non si sozzino; però ch' egli è nostro fratello e nostra carne. Acconsentirono li fratelli alle parole sue.	27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
28 E passando alcuni mercadanti Madianiti, traendolo della cisterna, lo venderono all'Ismaeliti XX dinari d'ariento; li quali menarono lui in Egitto.	28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
29 E ritornato Ruben alla cisterna, non trovoe lo fanciullo.	29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
30 E stracciatosi le vestimenta, andando a'fratelli suoi, disse: lo fanciullo non comparisce, ed io ove anderò?	30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
31 Ma egli tolsero la gonnella sua; e intinserla nel sangue d'uno capretto, il quale uccisero,	31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;
32 mandanti coloro che la portassero al padre, e dicessero: vedi, se è la gonnella del figliuolo tuo o no?	32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.
33 La quale quando la conobbe il padre, disse: la gonnella del figliuol mio è; la fera pessima mangiò lui; la bestia divorò Iosef.	33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
34 E stracciatosi le vestimenta, si vestì di cilicio, piangendo lo figliuolo molto tempo.	34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
35 Ed erano raunati tutti li figliuoli suoi, acciò ch' egli scemassero lo dolore del padre; e non volle ricevere la consolazione, ma disse: io anderò al figliuolo mio, piangendo, in inferno. E quello perserando nel pianto,	35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
36 i Madianiti venderono Iosef in Egitto a Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, maestro della milizia.	36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.
