1 וַיְהִי בִשְׁמֹונִים שָׁנָה וְאַרְבַּע מֵאֹות שָׁנָה לְצֵאת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֶרֶץ־מִצְרַיִם בַּשָּׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית בְּחֹדֶשׁ זִו הוּא הַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי לִמְלֹךְ שְׁלֹמֹה עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּבֶן הַבַּיִת לַיהוָה1 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year ofSolomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began building the Temple ofYahweh.
2 וְהַבַּיִת אֲשֶׁר בָּנָה הַמֶּלֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה לַיהוָה שִׁשִּׁים־אַמָּה אָרְכֹּו וְעֶשְׂרִים רָחְבֹּו וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אַמָּה קֹומָתֹו2 The temple which King Solomon built for Yahweh was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide and twenty-five high.
3 וְהָאוּלָם עַל־פְּנֵי הֵיכַל הַבַּיִת עֶשְׂרִים אַמָּה אָרְכֹּו עַל־פְּנֵי רֹחַב הַבָּיִת עֶשֶׂר בָּאַמָּה רָחְבֹּו עַל־פְּנֵי הַבָּיִת3 The portico in front of the Hekal of the Temple was twenty cubits long across the width of the Templeand ten cubits wide along the length of the Temple.
4 וַיַּעַשׂ לַבָּיִת חַלֹּונֵי שְׁקֻפִים אֲטֻמִים4 He made windows for the Temple with frames and latticework.
5 וַיִּבֶן עַל־קִיר הַבַּיִת [יָצֹועַ כ] (יָצִיעַ ק) סָבִיב אֶת־קִירֹות הַבַּיִת סָבִיב לַהֵיכָל וְלַדְּבִיר וַיַּעַשׂ צְלָעֹות סָבִיב5 He also built an annex against the Temple wal , right round the Hekal and Debir. He built lateral storeysal round;
6 [הַיָּצֹועַ כ] (הַיָּצִיעַ ק) הַתַּחְתֹּנָה חָמֵשׁ בָּאַמָּה רָחְבָּהּ וְהַתִּיכֹנָה שֵׁשׁ בָּאַמָּה רָחְבָּהּ וְהַשְּׁלִישִׁית שֶׁבַע בָּאַמָּה רָחְבָּהּ כִּי מִגְרָעֹות נָתַן לַבַּיִת סָבִיב חוּצָה לְבִלְתִּי אֲחֹז בְּקִירֹות־הַבָּיִת6 the lowest lateral storey was five cubits wide, the middle one six cubits, and the third seven cubits, for hehad made the outside of the Temple wal correspondingly stepped back al round, so that the annex was notattached to the Temple wal s.
7 וְהַבַּיִת בְּהִבָּנֹתֹו אֶבֶן־שְׁלֵמָה מַסָּע נִבְנָה וּמַקָּבֹות וְהַגַּרְזֶן כָּל־כְּלִי בַרְזֶל לֹא־נִשְׁמַע בַּבַּיִת בְּהִבָּנֹתֹו7 (The building of the Temple was done with quarry -- dressed stone; no sound of hammer or pick or anyiron tool was to be heard in the Temple while it was being built.)
8 פֶּתַח הַצֵּלָע הַתִּיכֹנָה אֶל־כֶּתֶף הַבַּיִת הַיְמָנִית וּבְלוּלִּים יַעֲלוּ עַל־הַתִּיכֹנָה וּמִן־הַתִּיכֹנָה אֶל־הַשְּׁלִשִׁים8 The entrance to the lowest storey was at the right-hand corner of the Temple; access to the middlestorey was by a spiral staircase, and so from the middle storey to the third.
9 וַיִּבֶן אֶת־הַבַּיִת וַיְכַלֵּהוּ וַיִּסְפֹּן אֶת־הַבַּיִת גֵּבִים וּשְׂדֵרֹת בָּאֲרָזִים9 Having finished building the Temple, he roofed the Temple with a coffered ceiling of cedar wood.
10 וַיִּבֶן אֶת־ [הַיָּצֹועַ כ] (הַיָּצִיעַ ק) עַל־כָּל־הַבַּיִת חָמֵשׁ אַמֹּות קֹומָתֹו וַיֶּאֱחֹז אֶת־הַבַּיִת בַּעֲצֵי אֲרָזִים׃ פ10 Round the outside of the Temple he then built the annex which was five cubits high and was joined tothe Temple by cedar-wood beams.
11 וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהוָה אֶל־שְׁלֹמֹה לֵאמֹר11 And the word of Yahweh came to Solomon,
12 הַבַּיִת הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר־אַתָּה בֹנֶה אִם־תֵּלֵךְ בְּחֻקֹּתַי וְאֶת־מִשְׁפָּטַי תַּעֲשֶׂה וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת־כָּל־מִצְוֹתַי לָלֶכֶת בָּהֶם וַהֲקִמֹתִי אֶת־דְּבָרִי אִתָּךְ אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֶל־דָּוִד אָבִיךָ12 'With regard to this temple which you are now building, if you follow my statutes and obey myordinances and faithful y follow my commandments, I shal fulfil the promise which I made about you to yourfather David.
13 וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתֹוךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא אֶעֱזֹב אֶת־עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ ס13 And I shal make my home among the Israelites and never forsake Israel my people.'
14 וַיִּבֶן שְׁלֹמֹה אֶת־הַבַּיִת וַיְכַלֵּהוּ14 Solomon finished building the Temple.
15 וַיִּבֶן אֶת־קִירֹות הַבַּיִת מִבַּיְתָה בְּצַלְעֹות אֲרָזִים מִקַּרְקַע הַבַּיִת עַד־קִירֹות הַסִּפֻּן צִפָּה עֵץ מִבָּיִת וַיְצַף אֶת־קַרְקַע הַבַּיִת בְּצַלְעֹות בְּרֹושִׁים15 He lined the inside of the Temple wal s with panels of cedar wood-panelling them on the inside fromthe floor of the Temple to the beams of the ceiling -- and laid the floor of the Temple with juniper planks.
16 וַיִּבֶן אֶת־עֶשְׂרִים אַמָּה [מִיַּרְכֹּותֵי כ] (מִיַּרְכְּתֵי ק) הַבַּיִת בְּצַלְעֹות אֲרָזִים מִן־הַקַּרְקַע עַד־הַקִּירֹות וַיִּבֶן לֹו מִבַּיִת לִדְבִיר לְקֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים16 The twenty cubits measured from the end of the Temple he built of cedar planks from the floor to thebeams, and this part was reserved as the Debir, the Holy of Holies.
17 וְאַרְבָּעִים בָּאַמָּה הָיָה הַבָּיִת הוּא הַהֵיכָל לִפְנָי17 The Temple measured forty cubits -- the Hekal -- in front of the Debir.
18 וְאֶרֶז אֶל־הַבַּיִת פְּנִימָה מִקְלַעַת פְּקָעִים וּפְטוּרֵי צִצִּים הַכֹּל אֶרֶז אֵין אֶבֶן נִרְאָה18 There was cedar wood round the inside of the Temple, ornamentally carved with gourds and rosettes;al was cedar wood, with no stone showing.
19 וּדְבִיר בְּתֹוךְ־הַבַּיִת מִפְּנִימָה הֵכִין לְתִתֵּן שָׁם אֶת־אֲרֹון בְּרִית יְהוָה19 In the inner part of the Temple he designed a Debir, to contain the ark of the covenant of Yahweh.
20 וְלִפְנֵי הַדְּבִיר עֶשְׂרִים אַמָּה אֹרֶךְ וְעֶשְׂרִים אַמָּה רֹחַב וְעֶשְׂרִים אַמָּה קֹומָתֹו וַיְצַפֵּהוּ זָהָב סָגוּר וַיְצַף מִזְבֵּחַ אָרֶז20 The Debir was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty high, and he overlaid it on the insidewith pure gold. He made an altar of cedar wood
21 וַיְצַף שְׁלֹמֹה אֶת־הַבַּיִת מִפְּנִימָה זָהָב סָגוּר וַיְעַבֵּר [בְּרַתִּיקֹות כ] (בְּרַתּוּקֹות ק) זָהָב לִפְנֵי הַדְּבִיר וַיְצַפֵּהוּ זָהָב21 in front of the Debir and overlaid it with gold.
22 וְאֶת־כָּל־הַבַּיִת צִפָּה זָהָב עַד־תֹּם כָּל־הַבָּיִת וְכָל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַ אֲ‍שֶׁר־לַדְּבִיר צִפָּה זָהָב22 He overlaid the whole Temple with gold, the whole Temple entirely.
23 וַיַּעַשׂ בַּדְּבִיר שְׁנֵי כְרוּבִים עֲצֵי־שָׁמֶן עֶשֶׂר אַמֹּות קֹומָתֹו23 In the Debir he made two great winged creatures of wild-olive wood. . .It was ten cubits high.
24 וְחָמֵשׁ אַמֹּות כְּנַף הַכְּרוּב הָאֶחָת וְחָמֵשׁ אַמֹּות כְּנַף הַכְּרוּב הַשֵּׁנִית עֶשֶׂר אַמֹּות מִקְצֹות כְּנָפָיו וְעַד־קְצֹות כְּנָפָיו24 One winged creature's wing was five cubits long and the other wing five cubits: ten cubits from wing tipto wing tip.
25 וְעֶשֶׂר בָּאַמָּה הַכְּרוּב הַשֵּׁנִי מִדָּה אַחַת וְקֶצֶב אֶחָד לִשְׁנֵי הַכְּרֻבִים25 The other winged creature also measured ten cubits; both had the same measurements and the sameshape.
26 קֹומַת הַכְּרוּב הָאֶחָד עֶשֶׂר בָּאַמָּה וְכֵן הַכְּרוּב הַשֵּׁנִי26 The height of one was the same as the other's.
27 וַיִּתֵּן אֶת־הַכְּרוּבִים בְּתֹוךְ ׀ הַבַּיִת הַפְּנִימִי וַיִּפְרְשׂוּ אֶת־כַּנְפֵי הַכְּרֻבִים וַתִּגַּע כְּנַף־הָאֶחָד בַּקִּיר וּכְנַף הַכְּרוּב הַשֵּׁנִי נֹגַעַת בַּקִּיר הַשֵּׁנִי וְכַנְפֵיהֶם אֶל־תֹּוךְ הַבַּיִת נֹגְעֹת כָּנָף אֶל־כָּנָף27 He placed them in the middle of the inner chamber; their wings were spread out so that the wing of onetouched one of the wal s and the wing of the other touched the other wall, while their wings met in the middle ofthe chamber wing to wing.
28 וַיְצַף אֶת־הַכְּרוּבִים זָהָב28 And he overlaid them with gold.
29 וְאֵת כָּל־קִירֹות הַבַּיִת מֵסַב ׀ קָלַע פִּתּוּחֵי מִקְלְעֹות כְּרוּבִים וְתִמֹרֹת וּפְטוּרֵי צִצִּים מִלִּפְנִים וְלַחִיצֹון29 Al round the Temple wal s he carved figures of winged creatures, palm trees and rosettes, both insideand outside.
30 וְאֶת־קַרְקַע הַבַּיִת צִפָּה זָהָב לִפְנִימָה וְלַחִיצֹון30 He overlaid the floor of the Temple with gold, both inside and outside.
31 וְאֵת פֶּתַח הַדְּבִיר עָשָׂה דַּלְתֹות עֲצֵי־שָׁמֶן הָאַיִל מְזוּזֹות חֲמִשִׁית31 He made the door of the Debir with uprights of wild-olive wood, and door jambs with five indentedsections,
32 וּשְׁתֵּי דַּלְתֹות עֲצֵי־שֶׁמֶן וְקָלַע עֲלֵיהֶם מִקְלְעֹות כְּרוּבִים וְתִמֹרֹות וּפְטוּרֵי צִצִּים וְצִפָּה זָהָב וַיָּרֶד עַל־הַכְּרוּבִים וְעַל־הַתִּמֹרֹות אֶת־הַזָּהָב32 and the two leaves of wild-olive wood. He carved figures of great winged creatures, palm trees androsettes which he overlaid with gold, and he gilded winged creatures and palm trees.
33 וְכֵן עָשָׂה לְפֶתַח הַהֵיכָל מְזוּזֹות עֲצֵי־שָׁמֶן מֵאֵת רְבִעִית33 Similarly, he made uprights of wild-olive wood for the door of the Hekal, and door jambs with fourindented sections,
34 וּשְׁתֵּי דַלְתֹות עֲצֵי בְרֹושִׁים שְׁנֵי צְלָעִים הַדֶּלֶת הָאַחַת גְּלִילִים וּשְׁנֵי קְלָעִים הַדֶּלֶת הַשֵּׁנִית גְּלִילִים34 and the two leaves of juniper: one leaf had two ribs binding it, and the other had two ribs binding it.
35 וְקָלַע כְּרוּבִים וְתִמֹרֹות וּפְטֻרֵי צִצִּים וְצִפָּה זָהָב מְיֻשָּׁר עַל־הַמְּחֻקֶּה35 He carved winged creatures, palm trees and rosettes, which he overlaid with gold laid evenly over thecarvings.
36 וַיִּבֶן אֶת־הֶחָצֵר הַפְּנִימִית שְׁלֹשָׁה טוּרֵי גָזִית וְטוּר כְּרֻתֹת אֲרָזִים36 He built the wal of the inner court in three courses of dressed stone and one course of cedar beams.
37 בַּשָּׁנָה הָרְבִיעִית יֻסַּד בֵּית יְהוָה בְּיֶרַח זִו37 In the fourth year, in the month of Ziv, the foundations of the Temple were laid;
38 וּבַשָּׁנָה הָאַחַת עֶשְׂרֵה בְּיֶרַח בּוּל הוּא הַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁמִינִי כָּלָה הַבַּיִת לְכָל־דְּבָרָיו וּלְכָל־ [מִשְׁפָּטֹו כ] (מִשְׁפָּטָיו ק) וַיִּבְנֵהוּ שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים38 in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul -- that is, the eighth month -- the Temple was completedexactly as it had been planned and designed. Solomon took seven years to build it.
