1 Jerobaal, isto é, Gedeão, levantando-se no dia seguinte bem cedo, foi acampar na fonte de Harad com todo o povo que o acompanhava. O acampamento madianita encontrava-se ao norte da colina de Moré, na planície.	1 Early the next morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) encamped by Enharod with all his soldiers. The camp of Midian was in the valley north of Gibeath-hammoreh.
2 O Senhor disse a Gedeão: A gente que levas contigo é numerosa demais para que eu entregue Madiã em suas mãos. Israel poderia gloriar-se à minha custa, dizendo: foi a minha mão que me livrou.	2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, 'My own power brought me the victory.'
3 Manda, pois, publicar este aviso para que todos o ouçam: quem for medroso ou tímido, volte para trás e deixe a montanha de Gelboé. Vinte e dois mil homens voltaram, ficando ainda dez mil.	3 Now proclaim to all the soldiers, 'If anyone is afraid or fearful, let him leave.'" When Gideon put them to this test on the mountain, twenty-two thousand of the soldiers left, but ten thousand remained.
4 O Senhor disse a Gedeão: Ainda há gente demais. Faze-os descer às águas, e ali farei uma escolha. Aquele que eu te disser que irá contigo, este te seguirá; e aquele que eu não te designar, ficará.	4 The LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many soldiers. Lead them down to the water and I will test them for you there. If I tell you that a certain man is to go with you, he must go with you. But no one is to go if I tell you he must not."
5 Gedeão fez, pois, descer o povo junto às águas e o Senhor disse-lhe: Porás à parte todos aqueles que lamberem a água com a língua, como faz o cão, e de outro lado aqueles que se puserem de joelhos para beber.	5 When Gideon led the soldiers down to the water, the LORD said to him, "You shall set to one side everyone who laps up the water as a dog does with its tongue; to the other, everyone who kneels down to drink."
6 Ora, o número dos que lamberam a água, levando-a com a mão à boca, foi de trezentos homens; todo o resto do povo se pusera de joelhos para beber.	6 Those who lapped up the water raised to their mouths by hand numbered three hundred, but all the rest of the soldiers knelt down to drink the water.
7 O Senhor disse a Gedeão: Com os trezentos homens que lamberam a água, vos salvarei, e entregarei Madiã nas tuas mãos. Todo o resto do povo volte para a sua casa.	7 The LORD said to Gideon, "By means of the three hundred who lapped up the water I will save you and will deliver Midian into your power. So let all the other soldiers go home."
8 Gedeão guardou os víveres do povo e suas trombetas, e despediu todos os israelitas, cada um para a sua tenda, só conservando os trezentos homens. O acampamento madianita estava embaixo, na planície.	8 Their horns, and such supplies as the soldiers had with them, were taken up, and Gideon ordered the rest of the Israelites to their tents, but kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 Durante a noite seguinte, o Senhor disse a Gedeão: Levanta-te e ataca o acampamento, porque to entregarei.	9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, "Go, descend on the camp, for I have delivered it up to you.
10 Todavia, se tens medo de descer só, leva contigo Fara, teu servo.	10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your aide Purah.
11 Ouvirás o que eles dizem, e sentir-te-ás assim encorajado para atacar o acampamento. Gedeão desceu, pois, com Fara, seu servo, até onde estavam os postos avançados do acampamento.	11 When you hear what they are saying, you will have the courage to descend on the camp." So he went down with his aide Purah to the outposts of the camp.
12 Ora, os madianitas, os amalecitas e todos os filhos do oriente estavam espalhados pelo vale, tão numerosos como gafanhotos, e seus camelos eram também inumeráveis como a areia das praias.	12 The Midianites, Amalekites, and all the Kedemites lay in the valley, as numerous as locusts. Nor could their camels be counted, for these were as many as the sands on the seashore.
13 No momento em que Gedeão se aproximou, um homem estava justamente contando um sonho ao seu companheiro: Eis, dizia ele, o sonho que tive: um pão de cevada rolava sobre o acampamento de Madiã e, chocando-se com a tenda, lançou-a completamente por terra. O companheiro respondeu:	13 When Gideon arrived, one man was telling another about a dream. "I had a dream," he said, "that a round loaf of barley bread was rolling into the camp of Midian. It came to our tent and struck it, and as it fell it turned the tent upside down."
14 Isso não é outra coisa senão a espada de Gedeão, filho de Joás, o israelita. Deus entregou em suas mãos Madiã e todo o acampamento.	14 "This can only be the sword of the Israelite Gideon, son of Joash," the other replied. "God has delivered Midian and all the camp into his power."
15 Tendo ouvido a narração e a interpretação desse sonho, Gedeão prostrou-se por terra. Voltou ao acampamento israelita e disse: Levantai-vos, porque o Senhor vos entregou nas mãos o acampamento dos madianitas!	15 When Gideon heard the description and explanation of the dream, he prostrated himself. Then returning to the camp of Israel, he said, "Arise, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your power."
16 Dividiu os trezentos homens em três grupos, e pôs nas mãos de todos trombetas e ânforas vazias, levando estas dentro uma tocha acesa.	16 He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and provided them all with horns and with empty jars and torches inside the jars.
17 Olhai para mim, disse ele, e fazei como eu. Quando eu chegar aos limites do acampamento, fazei o que eu fizer.	17 "Watch me and follow my lead," he told them. "I shall go to the edge of the camp, and as I do, you must do also.
18 Tocarei a trombeta com aqueles que me acompanham, e então tocareis também as vossas em volta de todo o acampamento, gritando: Pelo Senhor e por Gedeão!	18 When I and those with me blow horns, you too must blow horns all around the camp and cry out, 'For the LORD and for Gideon!'"
19 Gedeão com seus cem homens chegou aos limites do acampamento no princípio da segunda vigília, quando se rendiam as sentinelas, e começaram a tocar as trombetas, quebrando ao mesmo tempo as ânforas que tinham na mão.	19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the posting of the guards. They blew the horns and broke the jars they were holding.
20 Então os três batalhões tocaram {também} as trombetas e quebraram as ânforas. Tomando as tochas na mão esquerda e as trombetas na direita para tocar, gritaram: À espada pelo Senhor e por Gedeão!	20 All three companies blew horns and broke their jars. They held the torches in their left hands, and in their right the horns they were blowing, and cried out, "A sword for the LORD and Gideon!"
21 Cada um ficou em seu lugar, ao redor do acampamento; todo o acampamento se pôs a correr e fugiram, gritando.	21 They all remained standing in place around the camp, while the whole camp fell to running and shouting and fleeing.
22 Os trezentos homens continuavam a tocar as trombetas, enquanto, por todo o acampamento, o Senhor fez com que os madianitas voltassem a espada uns contra os outros, e o exército fugiu até Bet-Seta, para os lados de Sarera, e até os limites de Abel-Mehula, junto de Tebat.	22 But the three hundred men kept blowing the horns, and throughout the camp the LORD set the sword of one against another. The army fled as far as Beth-shittah in the direction of Zarethan, near the border of Abel-meholah at Tabbath.
23 Juntaram-se então aos israelitas as tribos de Neftali e de Aser e todo o Manassés, e perseguiram os madianitas.	23 The Israelites were called to arms from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.
24 Gedeão enviou mensageiros por todo o monte de Efraim, para dizer: Descei ao encontro dos madianitas e cortai-lhes a passagem das águas até Betbera, e até os vaus do Jordão. Juntaram-se, pois, os homens de Efraim e ocuparam as passagens até Betbera, e igualmente os vaus do Jordão.	24 Gideon also sent messengers throughout the mountain region of Ephraim to say, "Go down to confront Midian, and seize the water courses against them as far as Beth-barah, as well as the Jordan." So all the Ephraimites were called to arms, and they seized the water courses as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan as well.
25 Tendo capturado dois chefes madianitas, Oreb e Zeb, mataram Oreb no rochedo de Oreb, e Zeb no lagar de Zeb. E continuaram a perseguir os madianitas, levando as cabeças de Oreb e de Zeb a Gedeão, no outro lado do Jordão.	25 They captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, killing Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian and carried the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
