Epístola de São Tiago 4

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Donde vêm as lutas e as contendas entre vós? Não vêm elas de vossas paixões, que combatem em vossos membros?	1 Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Is it not precisely in the desiresfighting inside your own selves?
2 Cobiçais, e não recebeis; sois invejosos e ciumentos, e não conseguis o que desejais; litigais e fazeis guerra. Não obtendes, porque não pedis.	2 You want something and you lack it; so you kil . You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so youfight to get your way by force. It is because you do not pray that you do not receive;
3 Pedis e não recebeis, porque pedis mal, com o fim de satisfazerdes as vossas paixões.	3 when you do pray and do not receive, it is because you prayed wrongly, wanting to indulge yourpassions.
4 Adúlteros, não sabeis que o amor do mundo é abominado por Deus? Todo aquele que quer ser amigo do mundo constitui-se inimigo de Deus.	4 Adulterers! Do you not realise that love for the world is hatred for God? Anyone who chooses the worldfor a friend is constituted an enemy of God.
5 Ou imaginais que em vão diz a Escritura: Sois amados até o ciúme pelo espírito que habita em vós?	5 Can you not see the point of the saying in scripture, 'The longing of the spirit he sent to dwel in us is ajealous longing.'?
6 Deus, porém, dá uma graça ainda mais abundante. Por isso, ele diz: Deus resiste aos soberbos, mas dá sua graça aos humildes {Pr 3,34}.	6 But he has given us an even greater grace, as scripture says: God opposes the proud but he accordshis favour to the humble.
7 Sede submissos a Deus. Resisti ao demônio, e ele fugirá para longe de vós.	7 Give in to God, then; resist the devil, and he wil run away from you.
8 Aproximai-vos de Deus, e ele se aproximará de vós. Lavai as mãos, pecadores, e purificai os vossos corações, ó homens de dupla atitude.	8 The nearer you go to God, the nearer God wil come to you. Clean your hands, you sinners, and clearyour minds, you waverers.
9 Reconhecei a vossa miséria, afligi-vos e chorai. Converta-se o vosso riso em pranto e a vossa alegria em tristeza.	9 Appreciate your wretchedness, and weep for it in misery. Your laughter must be turned to grief, yourhappiness to gloom.
10 Humilhai-vos na presença do Senhor, e ele vos exaltará.	10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he wil lift you up.
11 Meus irmãos, não faleis mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal de seu irmão, ou o julga, fala mal da lei e julga a lei. E se julgas a lei, já não és observador da lei, mas seu juiz.	11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who slanders a brother, or condemns one, is speakingagainst the Law and condemning the Law. But if you condemn the Law, you have ceased to be subject to it andbecome a judge over it.
12 Não há mais que um legislador e um juiz: aquele que pode salvar e perder. Mas quem és tu, que julgas o teu próximo?	12 There is only one lawgiver and he is the only judge and has the power to save or to destroy. Who areyou to give a verdict on your neighbour?
13 Agora dizeis: Hoje ou amanhã iremos a tal cidade, ficaremos ali um ano, comerciaremos e tiraremos o nosso lucro.	13 Wel now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow, we are off to this or that town; we are going to spend ayear there, trading, and make some money.'
14 E, entretanto, não sabeis o que acontecerá amanhã! Pois que é a vossa vida? Sois um vapor que aparece por um instante e depois se desvanece.	14 You never know what wil happen tomorrow: you are no more than a mist that appears for a little whileand then disappears.
15 Em vez de dizerdes: Se Deus quiser, viveremos e faremos esta ou aquela coisa.	15 Instead of this, you should say, 'If it is the Lord's wil , we shal stil be alive to do this or that.'
16 Mas agora vós vos jactais das vossas presunções. Toda jactância desse gênero é viciosa.	16 But as it is, how boastful and loud -- mouthed you are! Boasting of this kind is always wrong.
17 Aquele que souber fazer o bem, e não o faz, peca.	17 Everyone who knows what is the right thing to do and does not do it commits a sin.
