1 Josué, filho de Nun, despachou de Setim secretamente dois espiões: Ide, disse-lhes ele, e examinai a terra e a cidade de Jericó. Em caminho, entraram em casa de uma prostituta chamada Raab, onde se alojaram.	1 Then Joshua, son of Nun, secretly sent out two spies from Shittim, saying, "Go, reconnoiter the land and Jericho." When the two reached Jericho, they went into the house of a harlot named Rahab, where they lodged.
2 E foi avisado ao rei de Jericó: Entraram aqui de noite alguns israelitas para explorar a terra.	2 But a report was brought to the king of Jericho that some Israelites had come there that night to spy out the land.
3 O rei mandou dizer a Raab: Faze sair esses homens que foram ter contigo e entraram em tua casa; porque vieram espionar a terra.	3 So the king of Jericho sent Rahab the order, "Put out the visitors who have entered your house, for they have come to spy out the entire land."
4 Mas a mulher ocultou os dois homens e respondeu: Vieram realmente uns homens à minha casa, mas eu não sabia de onde eram.	4 The woman had taken the two men and hidden them, so she said, "True, the men you speak of came to me, but I did not know where they came from.
5 Pela tarde, quando se iam fechar as portas da cidade, eles partiram. Ignoro para onde foram. Persegui-os vós depressa e os alcançareis.	5 At dark, when it was time for the gate to be shut, they left, and I do not know where they went. You will have to pursue them immediately to overtake them."
6 Ora, ela os fizera subir ao terraço de sua casa e os ocultara sob palhas de linho que ali havia.	6 Now, she had led them to the roof, and hidden them among her stalks of flax spread out there.
7 Os homens enviados foram atrás deles pelo caminho, que conduz ao vau do Jordão, e as portas da cidade foram fechadas após a partida da patrulha.	7 But the pursuers set out along the way to the fords of the Jordan, and once they had left, the gate was shut.
8 Antes que se deitassem, Raab subiu ao terraço junto dos espiões e disse-lhes:	8 Before the spies fell asleep, Rahab came to them on the roof
9 Eu sei que o Senhor vos entregou esta terra; o terror de vós apoderou-se de nós, e todos os habitantes da terra estão desanimados por vossa causa.	9 and said: "I know that the LORD has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of you.
10 Ouvimos dizer como o Senhor secou as águas do mar Vermelho diante de vós, quando saístes do Egito, e como, além do Jordão, tratastes os dois reis dos amorreus, Seon e Og, os quais votastes ao interdito.	10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and how you dealt with Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, whom you doomed to destruction.
11 Quando ouvimos isso, nosso coração desfaleceu e ninguém mais tem coragem de vos resistir, porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, é o Deus nas alturas dos céus e aqui embaixo na terra.	11 At these reports, we are disheartened; everyone is discouraged because of you, since the LORD, your God, is God in heaven above and on earth below.
12 Agora, vo-lo peço, jurai-me pelo Senhor, que, assim como usei de bondade para convosco, do mesmo modo poupareis a casa de meu pai.	12 Now then, swear to me by the LORD that, since I am showing kindness to you, you in turn will show kindness to my family; and give me an unmistakable token
13 Dai-me um sinal seguro de que salvareis meu pai, minha mãe, meus irmãos, minhas irmãs e todos os que lhe pertencem e livrareis as nossas vidas da morte.	13 that you are to spare my father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all their kin, and save us from death."
14 Eles responderam-lhe: a custa de nossa vida salvaremos a vossa, contanto que não nos atraiçoeis. Quando o Senhor nos entregar esta terra, fiéis {à nossa promessa} tratar-te-emos com bondade.	14 "We pledge our lives for yours," the men answered her. "If you do not betray this errand of ours, we will be faithful in showing kindness to you when the LORD gives us the land."
15 Então, servindo-se de uma corda, ela desceu-os pela janela, pois a casa em que morava estava sobre o muro da cidade.	15 Then she let them down through the window with a rope; for she lived in a house built into the city wall.
16 Ide para o monte, disse-lhes ela, para que não vos encontrem os vossos perseguidores. Ocultai-vos ali durante três dias, até que eles voltem; depois retomareis o vosso caminho.	16 "Go up into the hill country," she suggested to them, "that your pursuers may not find you. Hide there for three days, until they return; then you may proceed on your way."
17 Os homens disseram-lhe: Eis como havemos de cumprir o juramento a que nos obrigastes:	17 The men answered her, "This is how we will fulfill the oath you made us take:
18 quando tivermos entrado na terra, porás este cordão vermelho na janela por onde nos fizeste descer; reúne em torno de ti, em tua casa, teu pai, tua mãe, teus irmãos, e toda a família de teu pai.	18 When we come into the land, tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you are letting us down; and gather your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.
19 Se alguém ultrapassar a porta de tua casa e sair para fora, este será responsável pelo que acontecer, e nós seremos inocentes. Mas se alguém puser a mão sobre quem quer que seja que se encontrar contigo em tua casa, é sobre nós que isto cairá.	19 Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, he will be responsible for his own death, and we shall be guiltless. But we shall be responsible if anyone in the house with you is harmed.
20 Se divulgares, porém, o que combinamos contigo, estaremos desobrigados do juramento que nos fizeste fazer.	20 If, however, you betray this errand of ours, we shall be quit of the oath you have made us take."
21 Seja como dissestes, respondeu ela. Depois os despediu, e eles partiram. E ela pendurou o cordão vermelho na janela.	21 "Let it be as you say," she replied, and bade them farewell. When they were gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 Eles foram para o monte, onde permaneceram durante três dias, até que voltassem os que os perseguiam. Estes, tendo buscado por todo o caminho os espiões, não os encontraram.	22 They went up into the hills, where they stayed three days until their pursuers, who had sought them all along the road without finding them, returned.
23 Os dois homens desceram então do monte e, voltando, passaram o Jordão. Foram para junto de Josué, filho de Nun, e contaram-lhe tudo o que se tinha passado.	23 Then the two came back down from the hills, crossed the Jordan to Joshua, son of Nun, and reported all that had befallen them.
24 O Senhor, disseram-lhe eles, entregou toda essa terra nas nossas mãos, pois todos os seus habitantes tremem diante de nós.	24 They assured Joshua, "The LORD has delivered all this land into our power; indeed, all the inhabitants of the land are overcome with fear of us."
