Primeira Epístola aos Coríntios 8

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quanto às carnes oferecidas aos ídolos, somos esclarecidos, possuímos todos a ciência... Porém, a ciência incha, a caridade constrói.	1 Now about food which has been dedicated to false gods. We are wel aware that al of us haveknowledge; but while knowledge puffs up, love is what builds up.
2 Se alguém pensa que sabe alguma coisa, ainda não conhece nada como convém conhecer.	2 Someone may think that he has ful knowledge of something and yet not know it as wel as he should;
3 Mas, se alguém ama a Deus, esse é conhecido por ele.	3 but someone who loves God is known by God.
4 Assim, pois, quanto ao comer das carnes imoladas aos ídolos, sabemos que não existem realmente ídolos no mundo e que não há outro Deus, senão um só.	4 On the subject of eating foods dedicated to false gods, we are wel aware that none of the false godsexists in reality and that there is no God other than the One.
5 Pretende-se, é verdade, que existam outros deuses, quer no céu quer na terra {e há um bom número desses deuses e senhores}.	5 Though there are so-cal ed gods, in the heavens or on earth -- and there are plenty of gods and plentyof lords-
6 Mas, para nós, há um só Deus, o Pai, do qual procedem todas as coisas e para o qual existimos, e um só Senhor, Jesus Cristo, por quem todas as coisas existem e nós também.	6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father from whom al things come and for whom we exist, and oneLord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist.
7 Todavia, nem todos têm esse conhecimento. Alguns, habituados ao modo antigo de considerar o ídolo, comem a carne como sacrificada ao ídolo; e sua consciência, por ser débil, se mancha.	7 However, not everybody has this knowledge. There are some in whose consciences false gods stillplay such a part that they take the food as though it had been dedicated to a god; then their conscience, beingvulnerable, is defiled,
8 Não é, entretanto, a comida que nos torna agradáveis a Deus: comendo, não ganhamos nada; e não comendo, nada perdemos.	8 But of course food cannot make us acceptable to God; we lose nothing by not eating it, we gain nothingby eating it.
9 Atenção, porém: que essa vossa liberdade não venha a ser ocasião de queda aos fracos.	9 Only be careful that this freedom of yours does not in any way turn into an obstacle to trip those whoare vulnerable.
10 Se alguém te vir, a ti que és instruído, sentado à mesa no templo dos ídolos, não se sentirá, por fraqueza de consciência, também autorizado a comer do sacrifício aos ídolos?	10 Suppose someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some false god,do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be encouraged to eat foods dedicated to falsegods?
11 E assim por tua ciência vai se perder quem é fraco, um irmão, pelo qual Cristo morreu!	11 And then it would be through your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as heis, has been lost.
12 Assim, pecando vós contra os irmãos e ferindo sua débil consciência, pecais contra Cristo.	12 So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable consciences, you would be sinningagainst Christ.
13 Pelo que, se a comida serve de ocasião de queda a meu irmão, jamais comerei carne, a fim de que eu não me torne ocasião de queda para o meu irmão.	13 That is why, if food can be the cause of a brother's downfal , I wil never eat meat any more, ratherthan cause my brother's downfal .
