Evangelho segundo São Mateus 6

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Guardai-vos de fazer vossas boas obras diante dos homens, para serdes vistos por eles. Do contrário, não tereis recompensa junto de vosso Pai que está no céu.	1 'Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention; otherwise you wil lose al rewardfrom your Father in heaven.
2 Quando, pois, dás esmola, não toques a trombeta diante de ti, como fazem os hipócritas nas sinagogas e nas ruas, para serem louvados pelos homens. Em verdade eu vos digo: já receberam sua recompensa.	2 So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in thesynagogues and in the streets to win human admiration. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
3 Quando deres esmola, que tua mão esquerda não saiba o que fez a direita.	3 But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing;
4 Assim, a tua esmola se fará em segredo; e teu Pai, que vê o escondido, recompensar-te-á.	4 your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
5 Quando orardes, não façais como os hipócritas, que gostam de orar de pé nas sinagogas e nas esquinas das ruas, para serem vistos pelos homens. Em verdade eu vos digo: já receberam sua recompensa.	5 'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in thesynagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
6 Quando orares, entra no teu quarto, fecha a porta e ora ao teu Pai em segredo; e teu Pai, que vê num lugar oculto, recompensar-te-á.	6 But when you pray, go to your private room, shut yourself in, and so pray to your Father who is in thatsecret place, and your Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
7 Nas vossas orações, não multipliqueis as palavras, como fazem os pagãos que julgam que serão ouvidos à força de palavras.	7 'In your prayers do not babble as the gentiles do, for they think that by using many words they wil makethemselves heard.
8 Não os imiteis, porque vosso Pai sabe o que vos é necessário, antes que vós lho peçais.	8 Do not be like them; your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 Eis como deveis rezar: PAI NOSSO, que estais no céu, santificado seja o vosso nome;	9 So you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be held holy,
10 venha a nós o vosso Reino; seja feita a vossa vontade, assim na terra como no céu.	10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
11 O pão nosso de cada dia nos dai hoje;	11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 perdoai-nos as nossas ofensas, assim como nós perdoamos aos que nos ofenderam;	12 And forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us.
13 e não nos deixeis cair em tentação, mas livrai-nos do mal.	13 And do not put us to the test, but save us from the Evil One.
14 Porque, se perdoardes aos homens as suas ofensas, vosso Pai celeste também vos perdoará.	14 'Yes, if you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father wil forgive you yours;
15 Mas se não perdoardes aos homens, tampouco vosso Pai vos perdoará.	15 but if you do not forgive others, your Father wil not forgive your failings either.
16 Quando jejuardes, não tomeis um ar triste como os hipócritas, que mostram um semblante abatido para manifestar aos homens que jejuam. Em verdade eu vos digo: já receberam sua recompensa.	16 'When you are fasting, do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they go about lookingunsightly to let people know they are fasting. In truth I tel you, they have had their reward.
17 Quando jejuares, perfuma a tua cabeça e lava o teu rosto.	17 But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face,
18 Assim, não parecerá aos homens que jejuas, mas somente a teu Pai que está presente ao oculto; e teu Pai, que vê num lugar oculto, recompensar-te-á.	18 so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees al that is done in secret; andyour Father who sees al that is done in secret wil reward you.
19 Não ajunteis para vós tesouros na terra, onde a ferrugem e as traças corroem, onde os ladrões furtam e roubam.	19 'Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy them andthieves can break in and steal.
20 Ajuntai para vós tesouros no céu, onde não os consomem nem as traças nem a ferrugem, e os ladrões não furtam nem roubam.	20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them andthieves cannot break in and steal.
21 Porque onde está o teu tesouro, lá também está teu coração.	21 For wherever your treasure is, there wil your heart be too.
22 O olho é a luz do corpo. Se teu olho é são, todo o teu corpo será iluminado.	22 'The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is clear, your whole body will be fil ed withlight.
23 Se teu olho estiver em mau estado, todo o teu corpo estará nas trevas. Se a luz que está em ti são trevas, quão espessas deverão ser as trevas!	23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened,what darkness that wil be!
24 Ninguém pode servir a dois senhores, porque ou odiará a um e amará o outro, ou dedicar-se-á a um e desprezará o outro. Não podeis servir a Deus e à riqueza.	24 'No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or beattached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.
25 Portanto, eis que vos digo: não vos preocupeis por vossa vida, pelo que comereis, nem por vosso corpo, pelo que vestireis. A vida não é mais do que o alimento e o corpo não é mais que as vestes?	25 'That is why I am tel ing you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your bodyand what you are to wear. Surely life is more than food, and the body more than clothing!
26 Olhai as aves do céu: não semeiam nem ceifam, nem recolhem nos celeiros e vosso Pai celeste as alimenta. Não valeis vós muito mais que elas?	26 Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are?
27 Qual de vós, por mais que se esforce, pode acrescentar um só côvado à duração de sua vida?	27 Can any of you, however much you worry, add one single cubit to your span of life?
28 E por que vos inquietais com as vestes? Considerai como crescem os lírios do campo; não trabalham nem fiam.	28 And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields; they never have to work orspin;
29 Entretanto, eu vos digo que o próprio Salomão no auge de sua glória não se vestiu como um deles.	29 yet I assure you that not even Solomon in al his royal robes was clothed like one of these.
30 Se Deus veste assim a erva dos campos, que hoje cresce e amanhã será lançada ao fogo, quanto mais a vós, homens de pouca fé?	30 Now if that is how God clothes the wild flowers growing in the field which are there today and throwninto the furnace tomorrow, wil he not much more look after you, you who have so little faith?
31 Não vos aflijais, nem digais: Que comeremos? Que beberemos? Com que nos vestiremos?	31 So do not worry; do not say, "What are we to eat? What are we to drink? What are we to wear?"
32 São os pagãos que se preocupam com tudo isso. Ora, vosso Pai celeste sabe que necessitais de tudo isso.	32 It is the gentiles who set their hearts on al these things. Your heavenly Father knows you need themal .
33 Buscai em primeiro lugar o Reino de Deus e a sua justiça e todas estas coisas vos serão dadas em acréscimo.	33 Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God's saving justice, and al these other things wil begiven you as wel .
34 Não vos preocupeis, pois, com o dia de amanhã: o dia de amanhã terá as suas preocupações próprias. A cada dia basta o seu cuidado.	34 So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow wil take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of itsown.'
