SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Atravessava Jesus os campos de trigo num dia de sábado. Seus discípulos, tendo fome, começaram a arrancar as espigas para comê-las.	1 At that time Jesus went through the cornfields one Sabbath day. His disciples were hungry and beganto pick ears of corn and eat them.
2 Vendo isto, os fariseus disseram-lhe: Eis que teus discípulos fazem o que é proibido no dia de sábado.	2 The Pharisees noticed it and said to him, 'Look, your disciples are doing something that is forbiddenon the Sabbath.'
3 Jesus respondeu-lhes: Não lestes o que fez Davi num dia em que teve fome, ele e seus companheiros,	3 But he said to them, 'Have you not read what David did when he and his fol owers were hungry-
4 como entrou na casa de Deus e comeu os pães da proposição? Ora, nem a ele nem àqueles que o acompanhavam era permitido comer esses pães reservados só aos sacerdotes.	4 how he went into the house of God and they ate the loaves of the offering although neither he nor hisfol owers were permitted to eat them, but only the priests?
5 Não lestes na lei que, nos dias de sábado, os sacerdotes transgridem no templo o descanso do sábado e não se tornam culpados?	5 Or again, have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath day the Temple priests break the Sabbathwithout committing any fault?
6 Ora, eu vos declaro que aqui está quem é maior que o templo.	6 Now here, I tel you, is something greater than the Temple.
7 Se compreendêsseis o sentido destas palavras: Quero a misericórdia e não o sacrifício... não condenaríeis os inocentes.	7 And if you had understood the meaning of the words: Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifice, youwould not have condemned the blameless.
8 Porque o Filho do Homem é senhor também do sábado.	8 For the Son of man is master of the Sabbath.'
9 Partindo dali, Jesus entrou na sinagoga.	9 He moved on from there and went to their synagogue;
10 Encontrava-se lá um homem que tinha a mão seca. Alguém perguntou a Jesus: É permitido curar no dia de sábado? Isto para poder acusá-lo.	10 now a man was there with a withered hand. They asked him, 'Is it permitted to cure somebody on theSabbath day?' hoping for something to charge him with.
11 Jesus respondeu-lhe: Há alguém entre vós que, tendo uma única ovelha e se esta cair num poço no dia de sábado, não a irá procurar e retirar?	11 But he said to them, 'If any one of you here had only one sheep and it fell down a hole on theSabbath day, would he not get hold of it and lift it out?
12 Não vale o homem muito mais que uma ovelha? É permitido, pois, fazer o bem no dia de sábado.	12 Now a man is far more important than a sheep, so it fol ows that it is permitted on the Sabbath day todo good.'
13 Disse, então, àquele homem: Estende a mão. Ele a estendeu e ela tornou-se sã como a outra.	13 Then he said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored, assound as the other one.
14 Os fariseus saíram dali e deliberaram sobre os meios de o matar.	14 At this the Pharisees went out and began to plot against him, discussing how to destroy him.
15 Jesus soube disso e afastou-se daquele lugar. Uma grande multidão o seguiu, e ele curou todos os seus doentes.	15 Jesus knew this and withdrew from the district. Many fol owed him and he cured them al
16 Proibia-lhes formalmente falar disso,	16 but warned them not to make him known.
17 para que se cumprisse o anunciado pelo profeta Isaías:	17 This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
18 Eis o meu servo a quem escolhi, meu bem-amado em quem minha alma pôs toda sua a afeição. Farei repousar sobre ele o meu Espírito e ele anunciará a justiça aos pagãos.	18 Look! My servant whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul delights, I wil send my Spiritupon him, and he wil present judgement to the nations;
19 Ele não disputará, não elevará sua voz; ninguém ouvirá sua voz nas praças públicas.	19 he wil not brawl or cry out, his voice is not heard in the streets,
20 Não quebrará o caniço rachado, nem apagará a mecha que ainda fumega, até que faça triunfar a justiça.	20 he wil not break the crushed reed, or snuff the faltering wick,
21 Em seu nome as nações pagãs porão sua esperança {Is 42,1-4}.	21 until he has made judgement victorious; in him the nations will put their hope.
22 Apresentaram-lhe, depois, um possesso cego e mudo. Jesus o curou de tal modo, que este falava e via.	22 Then they brought to him a blind and dumb demoniac; and he cured him, so that the dumb man couldspeak and see.
23 A multidão, admirada, dizia: Não será este o filho de Davi?	23 Al the people were astounded and said, 'Can this be the son of David?'
24 Mas, ouvindo isto, os fariseus responderam: É por Beelzebul, chefe dos demônios, que ele os expulsa.	24 But when the Pharisees heard this they said, 'The man drives out devils only through Beelzebul, thechief of the devils.'
25 Jesus, porém, penetrando nos seus pensamentos, disse: Todo reino dividido contra si mesmo será destruído. Toda cidade, toda casa dividida contra si mesma não pode subsistir.	25 Knowing what was in their minds he said to them, 'Every kingdom divided against itself is heading forruin; and no town, no household divided against itself can last.
26 Se Satanás expele Satanás, está dividido contra si mesmo. Como, pois, subsistirá o seu reino?	26 Now if Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself; so how can his kingdom last?
27 E se eu expulso os demônios por Beelzebul, por quem é que vossos filhos os expulsam? Por isso, eles mesmos serão vossos juízes.	27 And if it is through Beelzebul that I drive devils out, through whom do your own experts drive themout? They shal be your judges, then.
28 Mas, se é pelo Espírito de Deus que expulso os demônios, então chegou para vós o Reino de Deus.	28 But if it is through the Spirit of God that I drive out devils, then be sure that the kingdom of God hascaught you unawares.
29 Como pode alguém penetrar na casa de um homem forte e roubar-lhe os bens, sem ter primeiro amarrado este homem forte? Só então pode roubar sua casa.	29 'Or again, how can anyone make his way into a strong man's house and plunder his property unlesshe has first tied up the strong man? Only then can he plunder his house.
30 Quem não está comigo está contra mim; e quem não ajunta comigo, espalha.	30 'Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather in with me throws away.
31 Por isso, eu vos digo: todo pecado e toda blasfêmia serão perdoados aos homens, mas a blasfêmia contra o Espírito não lhes será perdoada.	31 And so I tel you, every human sin and blasphemy will be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spiritwil not be forgiven.
32 Todo o que tiver falado contra o Filho do Homem será perdoado. Se, porém, falar contra o Espírito Santo, não alcançará perdão nem neste século nem no século vindouro.	32 And anyone who says a word against the Son of man wil be forgiven; but no one who speaks againstthe Holy Spirit wil be forgiven either in this world or in the next.
33 Ou dizeis que a árvore é boa e seu fruto bom, ou dizeis que é má e seu fruto, mau; porque é pelo fruto que se conhece a árvore.	33 'Make a tree sound and its fruit wil be sound; make a tree rotten and its fruit will be rotten. For thetree can be told by its fruit.
34 Raça de víboras, maus como sois, como podeis dizer coisas boas? Porque a boca fala do que lhe transborda do coração.	34 You brood of vipers, how can your speech be good when you are evil? For words flow out of what fil sthe heart.
35 O homem de bem tira boas coisas de seu bom tesouro. O mau, porém, tira coisas más de seu mau tesouro.	35 Good people draw good things from their store of goodness; bad people draw bad things from theirstore of badness.
36 Eu vos digo: no dia do juízo os homens prestarão contas de toda palavra vã que tiverem proferido.	36 So I tel you this, that for every unfounded word people utter they wil answer on Judgement Day,
37 É por tuas palavras que serás justificado ou condenado.	37 since it is by your words you wil be justified, and by your words condemned.'
38 Então alguns escribas e fariseus tomaram a palavra: Mestre, quiséramos ver-te fazer um milagre.	38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees spoke up. 'Master,' they said, 'we should like to see a sign from you.'
39 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Esta geração adúltera e perversa pede um sinal, mas não lhe será dado outro sinal do que aquele do profeta Jonas:	39 He replied, 'It is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it wil be given isthe sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 do mesmo modo que Jonas esteve três dias e três noites no ventre do peixe, assim o Filho do Homem ficará três dias e três noites no seio da terra.	40 For as Jonah remained in the belly of the sea-monster for three days and three nights, so wil the Sonof man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
41 No dia do juízo, os ninivitas se levantarão com esta raça e a condenarão, porque fizeram penitência à voz de Jonas. Ora, aqui está quem é mais do que Jonas.	41 On Judgement Day the men of Nineveh will appear against this generation and they wil be itscondemnation, because when Jonah preached they repented; and look, there is something greater than Jonahhere.
42 No dia do juízo, a rainha do Sul se levantará com esta raça e a condenará, porque veio das extremidades da terra para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão. Ora, aqui está quem é mais do que Salomão.	42 On Judgement Day the Queen of the South wil appear against this generation and be itscondemnation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and look, there issomething greater than Solomon here.
43 Quando o espírito impuro sai de um homem, ei-lo errante por lugares áridos à procura de um repouso que não acha.	43 'When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for aplace to rest, and cannot find one.
44 Diz ele, então: Voltarei para a casa donde saí. E, voltando, encontra-a vazia, limpa e enfeitada.	44 Then it says, "I wil return to the home I came from." But on arrival, finding it unoccupied, swept andtidied,
45 Vai, então, buscar sete outros espíritos piores que ele, e entram nessa casa e se estabelecem aí; e o último estado daquele homem torna-se pior que o primeiro. Tal será a sorte desta geração perversa.	45 it then goes off and col ects seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and set uphouse there, and so that person ends up worse off than before. That is what will happen to this wickedgeneration.'
46 Jesus falava ainda à multidão, quando veio sua mãe e seus irmãos e esperavam do lado de fora a ocasião de lhe falar.	46 He was still speaking to the crowds when suddenly his mother and his brothers were standingoutside and were anxious to have a word with him.
47 Disse-lhe alguém: Tua mãe e teus irmãos estão aí fora, e querem falar-te.	47 still speaking to the crowds when suddenly his mother and his brothers were standing outside andwere anxious to have a word with him.
48 Jesus respondeu-lhe: Quem é minha mãe e quem são meus irmãos?	48 But to the man who told him this Jesus replied, 'Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?'
49 E, apontando com a mão para os seus discípulos, acrescentou: Eis aqui minha mãe e meus irmãos.	49 And stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.
50 Todo aquele que faz a vontade de meu Pai que está nos céus, esse é meu irmão, minha irmã e minha mãe.	50 Anyone who does the wil of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.'
