SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Os filhos de Rubem e os filhos de Gad tinham rebanhos em grande quantidade; e, vendo que a terra de Jaser e a terra de Galaad eram próprias para a criação dos animais,	1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,
2 vieram procurar Moisés, o sacerdote Eleazar e os chefes da assembléia, dizendo:	2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,
3 "Atarot, Dibon, Jazer, Nemra, Hesebon, Eleale, Sabã, Nebo e Beon,	3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,
4 terras que o Senhor feriu diante dos filhos de Israel, são uma terra própria para o pasto dos rebanhos; e teus servos têm muitos animais."	4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.
5 E ajuntaram: "Se achamos graça diante de ti, seja dada essa terra em possessão aos teus servos, para que não tenhamos de atravessar o Jordão."	5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'
6 Moisés respondeu-lhes: "Irão os vossos irmãos à guerra, e vós quedareis tranqüilamente aqui?	6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?
7 Por que quereis desanimar os filhos de Israel, para que não entrem na terra que lhes deu o Senhor?	7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?
8 Foi justamente isso que fizeram os vossos pais quando os enviei de Cades-Barne para explorar a terra:	8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,
9 foram até o vale de Escol, viram a terra, e depois tiraram aos israelitas o desejo de entrar na terra que o Senhor lhes tinha dado.	9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.
10 Por isso, naquele dia a cólera do Senhor se inflamou de tal modo que ele fez este juramento:	10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,
11 os homens que subiram do Egito, da idade de vinte anos para cima, não verão jamais a terra que jurei dar a Abraão, a Isaac e a Jacó, porque não me seguiram com fidelidade,	11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,
12 exceto somente Caleb, filho de Jefoné, o cenezeu, e Josué, filho de Nun, que obedeceram sempre ao Senhor.	12 except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed havefol owed Yahweh absolutely."
13 E o Senhor, irado contra Israel, fê-lo errar pelo deserto durante quarenta anos, até que se extinguisse toda a geração que tinha feito o mal aos olhos do Senhor.	13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.
14 E agora, eis que tomais a sucessão de vossos pais, raça de pecadores, para aumentar ainda mais a cólera do Senhor contra Israel.	14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!
15 Se lhe recusais obedecer, ele continuará a vos deixar no deserto, e sereis a causa da ruína de todo o povo."	15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'
16 Mas eles, aproximando-se, disseram a Moisés: "Faremos aqui currais para os nossos rebanhos e construiremos cidades para os nossos filhos.	16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.
17 Nós, porém, nos equiparemos para marchar sem demora diante dos israelitas, até os introduzirmos na terra que lhes cabe, enquanto nossos filhos ficarão nas cidades fortes, ao abrigo dos habitantes da terra.	17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.
18 Não voltaremos às nossas casas antes que os israelitas tenham tomado posse cada um de sua porção.	18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.
19 Nada queremos do lado de lá do Jordão, junto deles, pois que já temos a nossa porção deste lado, a oriente."	19 For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'
20 Moisés disse-lhes: "Se fizerdes isso, e vos equipardes para combater diante do Senhor,	20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,
21 se todo homem apto para a guerra entre vós passar armado o Jordão diante do Senhor, até que o Senhor expulse seus inimigos,	21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,
22 e só voltardes para as vossas casas quando a terra estiver submetida diante do Senhor, então sereis irrepreensíveis aos olhos do Senhor e aos olhos de Israel, e possuireis esta terra que desejais diante do Senhor.	22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.
23 Mas se procederdes de outra forma, pecareis diante do Senhor; e sabeis que o vosso pecado cairá sobre vós.	23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.
24 Construí, pois, cidades para os vossos filhos e fazei currais para os vossos rebanhos, mas cumpri vossa promessa."	24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'
25 Os filhos de Gad e os filhos de Rubem responderam a Moisés: "Teus servos farão o que o meu senhor ordenar.	25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.
26 Nossos filhos, nossas mulheres, nossos rebanhos e nossos animais ficarão nas cidades de Galaad;	26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,
27 e teus servos equipados para a guerra marcharão ao combate diante do Senhor, segundo a ordem do meu senhor."	27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'
28 Então Moisés deu ordens a respeito deles ao sacerdote Eleazar, a Josué, filho de Nun, e aos chefes das famílias das tribos de Israel.	28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.
29 Disse ele: "Se os filhos de Gad e os filhos de Rubem passarem convosco o Jordão equipados para o combate diante do Senhor, e a terra vos for sujeita, deixar-lhes-eis em possessão a terra de Galaad.	29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.
30 Mas, se não passarem armados convosco, deverão estabelecer-se no meio de vós, na terra de Canaã."	30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'
31 Os filhos de Gad e os filhos de Rubem replicaram: "Faremos o que o Senhor disse aos teus servos.	31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.
32 Iremos armados diante do Senhor para a terra de Canaã, e nossa parte de terra será deste lado do Jordão."	32 Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'
33 Então Moisés deu aos filhos de Gad, aos filhos de Rubem e à meia tribo de Manassés, filho de José, o reino de Seon, rei dos amorreus, e o de Og, rei de Basã: a terra, com suas cidades e seus distritos, e as cidades da terra circunvizinha.	33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.
34 Os filhos de Gad construíram Dibon, Atarot, Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Atarot-Sofã, Jazer, Jegbaa,	35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Bet-Nemra e Betarã, cidades fortes, e fizeram currais para os rebanhos.	36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.
37 Os filhos de Rubem construíram Hesebon, Eleale, Cariataim,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nebo e Baalmeon, mudando-lhes os nomes, e Sabama; e deram nomes às cidades que edificaram.	38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.
39 Os filhos de Maquir, filho de Manassés, foram a Galaad e tomaram-na em possessão, depois de terem expulsado os amorreus que ali habitavam.	39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.
40 Moisés deu Galaad a Maquir, filho de Manassés, o qual se estabeleceu ali.	40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
41 Jair, filho de Manassés, foi e ocupou suas aldeias, às quais deu o nome de aldeias de Jair.	41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.
42 Nobé marchou contra Canat, e apoderou-se dela, bem como das aldeias dependentes, dando-lhe em seguida o nome de Nobé, seu próprio nome.	42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.
