SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 O povo pôs-se a murmurar amargamente aos ouvidos do Senhor. O Senhor, ouvindo isso, irou-se: o fogo do Senhor acendeu-se entre eles e devorou a extremidade do acampamento.	1 Now the people began to complain, which was offensive to Yahweh's ears. When Yahweh heard, hisanger was aroused and the fire of Yahweh broke out among them; it devoured one end of the camp.
2 O povo clamou a Moisés; Moisés orou ao Senhor e o fogo extinguiu-se.	2 The people appealed to Moses who interceded with Yahweh and the fire died down.
3 Deu-se àquele lugar o nome de Tabeera, porque o fogo do Senhor se tinha acendido no meio deles.	3 So the place was cal ed Taberah, because the fire of Yahweh had broken out among them.
4 A população que estava no meio de Israel foi atacada por um desejo desordenado; e mesmo os israelitas recomeçaram a gemer: "Quem nos dará carne para comer?, diziam eles.	4 The rabble who had joined the people were feeling the pangs of hunger, and the Israelites began toweep again. 'Who wil give us meat to eat?' they said.
5 Lembramo-nos dos peixes que comíamos de graça no Egito, os pepinos, os melões, os alhos bravos, as cebolas e os alhos.	5 'Think of the fish we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic!
6 Agora nossa alma está seca. Não há mais nada, e só vemos maná diante de nossos olhos."	6 But now we are withering away; there is nothing wherever we look except this manna!'
7 O maná assemelhava-se ao grão de coentro e parecia-se com o bdélio.	7 The manna was like coriander seed and had the appearance of bdellium.
8 O povo dispersava-se para colhê-lo; moía-o com a mó ou esmagava-o num pilão, cozia-o numa panela e fazia bolos com ele, os quais tinham o sabor de um bolo amassado com óleo.	8 The people went round gathering it, and ground it in a mill or crushed it with a pestle; it was thencooked in a pot and made into pancakes. It tasted like cake made with oil.
9 Enquanto de noite caía o orvalho no campo, caía também com ele o maná.	9 When the dew fell on the camp at night-time, the manna fell with it.
10 Ouviu Moisés o povo que chorava, agrupado por famílias, cada uma à entrada de sua tenda. A cólera do Senhor acendeu-se com violência. Moisés entristeceu-se.	10 Moses heard the people weeping, each family at the door of its tent. Yahweh's anger was greatlyaroused; Moses too found it disgraceful,
11 E disse ao Senhor: "Por que afligis vosso servo? Por que não acho eu favor a vossos olhos, vós que me impusestes a carga de todo esse povo?	11 and he said to Yahweh: 'Why do you treat your servant so badly? In what respect have I failed towin your favour, for you to lay the burden of al these people on me?
12 Porventura fui eu que concebi esse povo? Ou acaso fui eu que o dei à luz, para me dizerdes: leva-o em teu seio como a ama costuma levar o bebê, para a terra que, com juramento, prometi aos seus pais?	12 Was it I who conceived all these people, was I their father, for you to say to me, "Carry them in yourarms, like a foster-father carrying an unweaned child, to the country which I swore to give their fathers"?
13 Onde encontrarei carne para dar a todo esse povo que vem chorar perto de mim, dizendo: dá-nos carne para comer?	13 Where am I to find meat to give al these people, pestering me with their tears and saying, "Give usmeat to eat"?
14 Eu sozinho não posso suportar todo esse povo; ele é pesado demais para mim.	14 I cannot carry al these people on my own; the weight is too much for me.
15 Em lugar de tratar-me assim, rogo-vos que antes me façais morrer, se achei agrado a vossos olhos, a fim de que eu não veja a minha infelicidade!	15 If this is how you mean to treat me, please kil me outright! If only I could win your favour and bespared the sight of my misery!'
16 O Senhor respondeu a Moisés: "Junta-me setenta homens entre os anciãos de Israel, que sabes serem os anciãos do povo e tenham autoridade sobre ele. Conduze-os à tenda de reunião, onde estarão contigo.	16 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Col ect me seventy of the elders of Israel, men you know to be the people'selders and scribes. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and let them stand beside you there.
17 Então descerei e ali falarei contigo. Tomarei do espírito que está em ti e o derramarei sobre eles, para que possam levar contigo a carga do povo e não estejas mais sozinho.	17 I shall come down and talk to you there and shal take some of the spirit which is on you and put iton them. Then they wil bear the burden of the people with you, and you will no longer have to bear it on yourown.
18 Dirás ao povo: santificai-vos para amanhã, e tereis carne para comer, pois chorasses aos ouvidos do Eterno, dizendo: Quem nos dará carne para comer? Estávamos tão bem no Egito!... O Senhor vos dará carne, e comereis.	18 'And say to the people, "Purify yourselves for tomorrow and you wil have meat to eat, since youhave wept in Yahweh's hearing, saying: Who wil give us meat to eat? How happy we were in Egypt! Very wel ,Yahweh wil give you meat to eat.
19 E comereis não só um dia, nem dois, nem cinco, nem dez, nem vinte,	19 You wil eat it not for one day, or two, or five, or ten or twenty,
20 mas durante um mês inteiro, até que ela vos saia pelas narinas e vos cause nojo: porque rejeitasses o Senhor que está no meio de vós e dissestes-lhe chorando: por que saímos nós do Egito?"	20 but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and sickens you, since you have rejectedYahweh who is among you, and have wept before him saying: Why did we ever leave Egypt?" '
21 Moisés disse: "Este povo, no meio do qual estou, conta seiscentos mil homens de pé, e dizeis que lhes dareis carne para que comam um mês inteiro!	21 Moses said, 'The people round me number six hundred thousand foot soldiers, and you say, "I shalgive them meat to eat for a whole month"!
22 Porventura matar-se-á tanta quantidade de ovelhas e bois até que tenham bastante? Ou juntar-se-ão todos os peixes do mar para fartá-los?"	22 If al the flocks and herds were slaughtered, would that be enough for them? If al the fish in the seaswere collected, would that be enough for them?'
23 O Senhor respondeu a Moisés: "Acaso será impotente a mão do Senhor? Verás sem demora se se fará ou não o que eu te disse."	23 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Is the arm of Yahweh so short? You shal see whether the promise I havemade to you comes true or not.'
24 Moisés saiu e referiu ao povo as palavras do Senhor. Reuniu setenta homens dos anciãos do povo e os colocou em volta da tenda.	24 Moses went out and told the people what Yahweh had said. Then he col ected seventy of thepeople's elders and stationed them round the Tent.
25 O Senhor desceu na nuvem e falou a Moisés; tomou uma parte do espírito que o animava e a pôs sobre os setenta anciãos. Apenas repousara o espírito sobre eles, começaram a profetizar; mas não continuaram.	25 Yahweh descended in the cloud. He spoke to him and took some of the spirit that was on him andput it on the seventy elders. When the spirit came on them they prophesied -- but only once.
26 Dois homens tinham ficado no acampamento: um chamava-se Eldad e o outro, Medad, e o espírito repousou também sobre eles, pois tinham sido alistados, mas não tinham ido à tenda; e profetizaram no acampamento.	26 Two men had stayed back in the camp; one was called Eldad and the other Medad. The spirit camedown on them; though they had not gone to the Tent, their names were enrol ed among the rest. These began toprophesy in the camp.
27 Um jovem correu a dar notícias a Moisés: "Eldad e Medad, disse ele, profetizam no acampamento."	27 A young man ran to tel Moses this. 'Look,' he said, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.'
28 Então Josué, filho de Nun, servo de Moisés desde a sua juventude, tomou a palavra: "Moisés, disse ele, meu senhor, impede-os."	28 Joshua son of Nun, who had served Moses since he was a boy, spoke up and said, 'My lord Moses,stop them!'
29 Moisés, porém, respondeu: "Por que és tão zeloso por mim? Prouvera a Deus que todo o povo do Senhor profetizasse, e que o Senhor lhe desse o seu espírito!"	29 Moses replied, 'Are you jealous on my account? If only al Yahweh's people were prophets, andYahweh had given them his spirit!'
30 E Moisés retirou-se do acampamento com os anciãos de Israel.	30 Moses then went back to the camp with the elders of Israel.
31 Um vento mandado pelo Senhor, vindo das bandas do mar, trouxe consigo codornizes, e derramou-as sobre o acampamento, numa extensão de cerca de um dia de caminho para ambos os lados em volta do acampamento; e cobriam o solo, cerca de dois côvados de alto sobre a superfície da terra.	31 A wind, sent by Yahweh, started blowing from the sea bringing quails which it deposited on thecamp. They lay for a distance of a day's march either side of the camp, two cubits thick on the ground.
32 Levantou-se então o povo, e ajuntou durante todo aquele dia, toda a noite e todo o dia seguinte tantas codornizes, que aquele que menos ajuntou conseguiu encher dez homeres. E estenderam-nas, para si mesmos, em toda a volta do acampamento.	32 The people were up al that day and night and all the next day collecting quails: the least gatheredby anyone was ten homer; then they spread them out round the camp.
33 Ainda a carne estava nos seus dentes, e ainda não estava mastigada, quando a cólera do Senhor se inflamou contra o povo e o Senhor feriu o povo com um grande flagelo.	33 The meat was still between their teeth, not even chewed, when Yahweh's anger was aroused by thepeople. Yahweh struck them with a very great plague.
34 Chamou-se àquele lugar Quibrot-Hataava, porque ali sepultou-se o povo que se deixara dominar pelo desordenado.	34 The name given to this place was Kibroth-ha-Taavah, because it was there that they buried thepeople who had indulged their greed.
35 De Quibrot-Hataava, partiu o povo para Haserot, onde se deteve.	35 From Kibroth-ha-Taavah the people set out for Hazeroth, and at Hazeroth they pitched camp.
