SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 No terceiro ano de Ciro, rei da Pérsia, um oráculo foi revelado a Daniel {cognominado Baltazar}. Esse oráculo era verídico e anunciava grandes lutas. Daniel compreendeu o oráculo e teve conhecimento do sentido da visão.	1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was made to Daniel known as Belteshazzar, atrue revelation of a great conflict. He grasped the meaning of the revelation; what it meant was disclosed to himin a vision.
2 Naquele tempo, eu, Daniel, fiz penitência durante três semanas.	2 At that time, I, Daniel, was doing a three-week penance;
3 Não provei alimento delicado algum: não passou em minha boca nem carne nem vinho; não me ungi de óleo absolutamente durante o transcurso dessas três semanas.	3 I ate no agreeable food, touched no meat or wine, and did not anoint myself, until these three weekswere over.
4 No vigésimo quarto dia do primeiro mês, encontrava-me à beira do grande rio, o Tigre.	4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I stood on the bank of that great river, the Tigris,
5 Levantando os olhos, vi um homem vestido de linho. Cingia-lhe os rins um cinto de ouro de Ufaz.	5 I raised my eyes to look about me, and this is what I saw: A man dressed in linen, with a belt of puregold round his waist:
6 Seu corpo era como o crisólito; seu rosto brilhava como o relâmpago, seus olhos, como tochas ardentes, seus braços e pés tinham o aspecto do bronze polido e sua voz ressoava como o rumor de uma multidão.	6 his body was like beryl, his face looked like lightning, his eyes were like fiery torches, his arms and hisface had the gleam of burnished bronze, the sound of his voice was like the roar of a multitude.
7 Eu, Daniel, era o único a ver essa aparição; meus companheiros não a viram, mas se apoderou deles um tão grande pavor que fugiram para esconder-se.	7 I, Daniel, alone saw the apparition; the men who were with me did not see the vision, but so great atrembling overtook them that they fled to hide.
8 Fiquei portanto sozinho a contemplar essa grandiosa aparição. As forças me abandonaram: a tez do meu rosto tornou-se lívida e eu desfaleci.	8 I was left alone, gazing on this great vision; I was powerless, my appearance was changed andcontorted; my strength deserted me.
9 Ouvi então esse homem falar, e, ao som de suas palavras, caí desmaiado, com o rosto por terra.	9 I heard a voice speaking, and at the sound of the voice I fel fainting, face downwards on the ground.
10 Eis porém que uma mão me tocou, e fez com que me erguesse sobre os joelhos e as palmas das mãos.	10 I felt a hand touching me, setting my knees and my hands trembling.
11 Daniel, homem de predileção, disse-me ele, presta atenção às palavras que vou dirigir-te. Levanta-te, pois tenho uma mensagem a te confiar. Como me falasse assim, levantei-me tremendo.	11 He said, 'Daniel, you are a man specially chosen; understand the words that I am about to say; standup; I have been sent to you now.' He said this, and I stood up trembling.
12 Não temas, Daniel, disse-me, porque desde o primeiro dia em que aplicaste teu espírito a compreender, e em que te humilhaste diante de teu Deus, tua oração foi ouvida, e é por isso que eu vim.	12 He then said, 'Daniel, do not be afraid: from that first day when, the better to understand, youresolved to mortify yourself before God, your words have been heard; and your words are the reason why I havecome.
13 O chefe do reino persa resistiu-me durante vinte e um dias; porém Miguel, um dos principais chefes, veio em meu socorro. Permaneci assim ao lado dos reis da Pérsia.	13 The Prince of the kingdom of Persia has been resisting me for twenty-one days, but Michael, one ofthe Chief Princes, came to my assistance. I have left him confronting the kings of Persia
14 Aqui estou para fazer-te compreender o que deve acontecer a teu povo nos últimos dias; pois essa visão diz respeito a tempos longínquos.	14 and have come to tel you what will happen to your people in the final days. For here is a new visionabout those days.'
15 Enquanto assim me falava, eu mantinha meus olhos fixos no chão e permanecia mudo.	15 When he had said these things to me, I prostrated myself on the ground, without saying a word;
16 De repente, um ser de forma humana tocou-me nos lábios. Abri a boca e falei; disse ao personagem que estava perto de mim: Meu senhor, essa visão transtornou-me, e estou sem forças.	16 then someone looking like a man touched my lips. I opened my mouth to speak, and I said to theperson standing in front of me, 'My lord, anguish overcomes me at this vision, and my strength deserts me.
17 Como poderia o servo de meu senhor conversar com seu senhor, quando está sem forças e sem fôlego?	17 How can your servant speak to my lord now that I have no strength left and my breath fails me?'
18 Então o ser em forma humana tocou-me novamente e me reanimou.	18 Once again, the person like a man touched me; he gave me strength.
19 Não temas nada, homem de predileção! Que a paz esteja contigo! Coragem, coragem! Enquanto ele me falava senti-me reanimado. Fala, meu senhor, disse, pois tu me restituíste as minhas forças.	19 'Do not be afraid,' he said, 'you are a man special y chosen; peace be with you; play the man, bestrong!' And as he spoke to me I felt strong again and said, 'Let my lord speak, you have given me strength.'
20 Sabes bem, prosseguiu ele, porque vim a ti? Vou voltar agora para lutar contra o chefe da Pérsia, e no momento em que eu partir virá o chefe de Javã.	20 He then said, 'Do you know why I have come to you?
