1 Em verdade, grandes e impenetráveis são vossos juízos, Senhor; por isso as almas grosseiras caíram no erro.	1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.
2 Por terem acreditado que podiam oprimir a santa nação, os ímpios, prisioneiros das trevas e encarcerados por uma longa noite, jaziam encerrados nas suas casas, tentando escapar à vossa incessante vigilância.	2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.
3 Depois de terem imaginado que, com seus secretos pecados, ficariam escondidos sob o sombrio véu do esquecimento, eles se viram dispersados, como presa de um terrível espanto, e amedrontados por alucinações.	3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.
4 Mesmo o canto mais afastado em que se abrigavam não os punha ao abrigo do terror: ruídos aterradores ressoavam em torno deles, e taciturnos espectros de lúgubre aspecto lhes apareciam.	4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.
5 Nenhuma chama, por intensa que fosse, chegava a iluminar. E a luz brilhante dos astros era impotente para alumiar esta noite sombria.	5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.
6 Mas aparecia-lhes de súbito nada mais que uma chama aterradora, e, tomados de terror por esta visão fugitiva, julgavam essas aparições mais terríveis ainda.	6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.
7 A arte dos mágicos se mostrou ilusória, e esta sabedoria, a que eles pretendiam, evidenciou-se vergonhosamente como falsidade.	7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.
8 Aqueles que se jactavam de banir das almas doentes o terror e a perturbação, eram eles mesmos	8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.
9 Mesmo quando nada de mais grave os aterrorizava, a passagem dos animais e o silvo das serpentes punham-nos fora de si, e eles morriam de medo. Recusavam até mesmo contemplar essa atmosfera à qual nada podia escapar;	9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,
10 porque a maldade, condenada por seu próprio testemunho, é medrosa, e, sob o peso da consciência, supõe sempre o pior,	10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.
11 pois o temor não é outra coisa que a privação dos socorros trazidos pela reflexão,	11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.
12 porque, quanto menor for em sua alma a esperança de auxílio, tanto mais penosa é a ignorância daquilo de que se tem medo.	12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;
13 Eles, durante essa noite de impotência, saída dos recantos do Hades impotente, dormiam num mesmo sono,	13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.
14 agitados, de um lado, pelo terror dos espectros, e paralisados, de outro, pelo desfalecimento da alma; pois era um pavor repentino e inesperado o que se abatera sobre eles.	14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,
15 E todo aquele que caía sem força, ficava como que preso e encerrado num cárcere sem ferros.	15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.
16 Fosse ele camponês ou pastor, ou o operário que se afadiga sozinho no seu trabalho, uma vez surpreendido, tinha de suportar a inevitável necessidade, porque todos estavam ligados por uma mesma cadeia de trevas.	16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.
17 O silvo do vento, o canto harmonioso dos passarinhos nos ramos espessos, o murmúrio da água correndo precipitadamente, o estrondo das rochas que se despenhavam,	17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;
18 a carreira invisível dos animais que saltavam, os urros dos animais selvagens, o eco que repercutia nas cavidades dos montes: tudo os paralisava de terror.	18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,
19 Enquanto o mundo inteiro era alumiado de uma brilhante luz, e sem obstáculo se entregava às suas ocupações,	19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.
20 somente sobre eles se estendia uma pesada noite, imagem das trevas que mais tarde os deviam acolher; e eram para si mesmos um peso mais insuportável que esta escuridão.	20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;
	21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
