SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Vosso espírito incorruptível está em todos.	1 For your imperishable spirit is in everything!
2 É por isso que castigais com brandura aqueles que caem, e os advertis mostrando-lhes em que pecam, a fim de que rejeitem sua malícia e creiam em vós, Senhor.	2 And thus, gradual y, you correct those who offend; you admonish and remind them of how they havesinned, so that they may abstain from evil and trust in you, Lord.
3 Foi assim que se deu com os antigos habitantes da Terra Santa.	3 The ancient inhabitants of your holy land
4 Tínheis horror deles por causa de suas obras detestáveis, sua magia e seus ritos ímpios,	4 you hated for their loathsome practices, their acts of sorcery, and unholy rites.
5 seus cruéis morticínios de crianças, seus festins de entranhas, carne humana e sangue, suas iniciações nos mistérios orgíacos,	5 Those ruthless murderers of children, those eaters of entrails at feasts of human flesh and of blood,those initiates of secret brotherhoods,
6 e os crimes de pais contra seres indefesos; e resolvestes aniquilá-los pela mão de nossos pais,	6 those murderous parents of defenceless beings, you determined to destroy at our ancestors' hands,
7 para que esta terra, que estimais entre todas, recebesse uma digna colônia de filhos de Deus.	7 so that this land, dearer to you than any other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.
8 Contudo, porque também eles eram homens, vós os poupastes, enviando-lhes vespas precursoras de vosso exército, para que elas os fizessem perecer pouco a pouco.	8 Even so, since these were human, you treated them leniently, sending hornets as forerunners of yourarmy, to exterminate them little by little.
9 Não é que vos fosse impossível esmagar os maus por meio dos justos num combate, ou exterminar todos juntos por animais ferozes ou por uma palavra categórica;	9 Not that you were unable to hand the godless over to the upright in pitched battle or destroy them atonce by savage beasts or one harsh word;
10 mas castigando-os pouco a pouco, dáveis tempo para o arrependimento, não ignorando que sua raça era maldita, ingênita a sua perversidade, e que jamais seus pensamentos se mudariam,	10 but, by carrying out your sentences gradual y, you gave them a chance to repent, although you knewthat they were inherently evil, innately wicked,
11 porque sua estirpe era má desde a origem... Não era por temor do que quer que fosse que vos mostráveis indulgente para com eles em seus pecados.	11 and fixed in their cast of mind; for they were a race accursed from the beginning. Nor was it from aweof anyone that you let their sins go unpunished.
12 Porque, quem ousará dizer-vos: Que fizeste tu? E quem se oporá a vosso julgamento? Quem vos repreenderá de terdes aniquilado nações que criastes? Ou quem se levantará contra vós para defender os culpados?	12 For who is there to ask, 'What have you done?' Or who is there to disagree with your sentence? Whoto arraign you for destroying nations which you have created? Who to confront you by championing the wicked?
13 Não há, fora de vós, um Deus que se ocupa de tudo, e a quem deveis mostrar que nada é injusto em vosso julgamentos;	13 For there is no god, other than you, who cares for every one, to whom you have to prove that yoursentences have been just.
14 nem um rei, nem um tirano que vos possa resistir em favor dos que castigastes.	14 No more could any king or despot chal enge you over those whom you have punished.
15 Mas porque sois justo, governais com toda a justiça, e julgais indigno de vosso poder condenar quem não merece ser punido.	15 For, being upright yourself, you rule the universe uprightly, and hold it as incompatible with yourpower to condemn anyone who has not deserved to be punished.
16 Porque vossa força é o fundamento de vossa justiça e o fato de serdes Senhor de todos, vos torna indulgente para com todos.	16 For your strength is the basis of your saving justice, and your sovereignty over al makes you lenientto al .
17 Mostrais vossa força aos que não crêem no vosso poder, e confundis os que a não conhecem e ousam afrontá-la.	17 You show your strength when people will not believe in your absolute power, and you confound anyinsolence in those who do know it.
18 Senhor de vossa força, julgais com bondade, e nos governais com grande indulgência, porque sempre vos é possível empregar vosso poder, quando quiserdes.	18 But you, control ing your strength, are mild in judgement, and govern us with great lenience, for youhave only to wil , and your power is there.
19 Agindo desta maneira, mostrastes a vosso povo que o justo deve ser cheio de bondade, e inspirastes a vossos filhos a boa esperança de que, após o pecado, lhes dareis tempo para a penitência;	19 By acting thus, you have taught your people that the upright must be kindly to his fel ows, and youhave given your children the good hope that after sins you wil grant repentance.
20 porque se os inimigos de vossos filhos, dignos de morte, vós os haveis castigado com tanta prudência e longanimidade, dando-lhes tempo e ocasião para se emendarem,	20 For, if with such care and indulgence you have punished your children's enemies, though doomed todeath, and have given them time and place to be rid of their wickedness,
21 com quanto cuidado não julgareis vós os vossos filhos, a cujos antepassados concedestes com juramento vossa aliança, repleta de ricas promessas!	21 with what exact attention have you not judged your children, to whose ancestors, by oaths andcovenants, you made such generous promises?
22 Portanto, quando nos corrigis, castigais mil vezes mais nossos inimigos, para que em nossos julgamentos nos lembremos de vossa bondade, e para que esperemos em vossa indulgência quando somos julgados.	22 Thus, you instruct us, when you punish our enemies in moderation, that we should reflect on yourkindness when we judge, and, when we are judged, we should look for mercy.
23 Por isso também aqueles que loucamente viveram no mal, vós os torturastes por meio das suas próprias abominações:	23 And this is why people leading foolish and wicked lives were tortured by you with their ownabominations;
24 porque se tinham afastado demais nos caminhos do erro, tomando por deuses os mais vis animais, deixando-se enganar como meninos sem razão;	24 for they had strayed too far on the paths of error by taking the vilest and most despicable of animalsfor gods, being deluded like sil y little children.
25 assim é que, como a meninos sem razão, lhes destes um castigo irrisório.	25 So, as to children with no sense, you gave them a sentence making fools of them.
26 Mas os que recusam a advertência de semelhante correção sofrerão um castigo digno de Deus.	26 Those, however, who would not take warning from a mocking reproof were soon to endure asentence worthy of God.
27 Excitados, então, pelos sofrimentos causados por esses animais que tinham julgado deuses, e que os atormentavam, viram o que no começo tinham recusado ver, e reconheceram o verdadeiro Deus. Por isso é que caiu sobre eles a condenação final.	27 The creatures that made them suffer and against which they protested, those very creatures that theyhad taken for gods and by which they were punished they saw in their true light; and he whom hitherto they hadrefused to know, they realised was true God. And this is why the final condemnation fell on them.
