SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Toda a assembléia dos israelitas partiu de Elim e foi para o deserto de Sin, situado entre Elim e o Sinai. Era o décimo quinto dia do segundo mês após sua saída do Egito.	1 Setting out from Elim, the whole community of Israelites entered the desert of Sin, lying between Elimand Sinai -- on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left Egypt.
2 Toda a assembléia dos israelitas pôs-se a murmurar contra Moisés e Aarão no deserto.	2 And the whole community of Israelites began complaining about Moses and Aaron in the desert
3 Disseram-lhes: "Oxalá tivéssemos sido mortos pela mão do Senhor no Egito, quando nos assentávamos diante das panelas de carne e tínhamos pão em abundância! Vós nos conduzistes a este deserto, para matardes de fome toda esta multidão."	3 and said to them, 'Why did we not die at Yahweh's hand in Egypt, where we used to sit round the fleshpots and could eat to our heart's content! As it is, you have led us into this desert to starve this entire assemblyto death!'
4 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "Vou fazer chover pão do alto do céu. Sairá o povo e colherá diariamente a porção de cada dia. Pô-lo-ei desse modo à prova, para ver se andará ou não segundo minhas ordens.	4 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Look, I shal rain down bread for you from the heavens. Each day thepeople must go out and collect their ration for the day; I propose to test them in this way to see whether they wilfol ow my law or not.
5 No sexto dia, quando prepararem o que tiverem ajuntado haverá o dobro do que recolhem cada dia."	5 On the sixth day, however, when they prepare what they have brought in, this must be twice as muchas they col ect on ordinary days.'
6 Moisés e Aarão disseram a todos os israelitas: "Esta tarde, sabereis que foi o Senhor quem vos tirou do Egito,	6 Moses and Aaron then said to the whole community of Israelites, 'This evening you wil know that itwas Yahweh who brought you out of Egypt,
7 e amanhã pela manhã vereis a sua glória, porque ele ouviu as vossas murmurações contra ele. Nós, porém, quem somos nós para que murmureis contra nós?"	7 and tomorrow morning you wil see the glory of Yahweh, for Yahweh has heard your complaints abouthim. What are we, that your complaint should be against us?'
8 Moisés disse: "Isso acontecerá quando o Senhor vos der, esta tarde, carne para comerdes e, amanhã pela manhã, pão em abundância, porque ele ouviu as murmurações que proferistes contra ele. Nós, porém, quem somos? Não é contra nós que murmurastes, mas contra o Senhor."	8 Moses then said, 'This evening Yahweh wil give you meat to eat, and tomorrow morning bread to yourheart's content, for Yahweh has heard your complaints about him. What do we count for? Your complaints arenot against us, but against Yahweh.'
9 Moisés disse a Aarão: "Dize a toda a assembléia dos israelitas: apresentai-vos diante do Senhor, porque ele ouviu vossas murmurações".	9 Moses then said to Aaron, 'Say to the whole community of Israelites, "Approach Yahweh's presence,for he has heard your complaints." '
10 Enquanto Aarão falava a toda a assembléia dos israelitas, olharam para o deserto e eis que apareceu na nuvem a glória do Senhor!	10 As Aaron was speaking to the whole community of Israelites, they turned towards the desert, andthere the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.
11 E o Senhor disse a Moisés:	11 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
12 "Ouvi as murmurações dos israelitas. Dize-lhes: esta tarde, antes que escureça, comereis carne e, amanhã de manhã, vos fartareis de pão; e sabereis que sou o Senhor, vosso Deus".	12 'I have heard the Israelites' complaints. Speak to them as follows, "At twilight you wil eat meat, and inthe morning you will have bread to your heart's content, and then you wil know that I am Yahweh your God." '
13 À tarde, com efeito, subiram codornizes {do horizonte} e cobriram o acampamento; e, no dia seguinte pela manhã, havia uma camada de orvalho em torno de todo o acampamento.	13 That evening, quails flew in and covered the camp, and next morning there was a layer of dew alround the camp.
14 E, tendo evaporado esse orvalho, eis que sobre a superfície do deserto estava uma coisa miúda, granulosa, miúda como a geada sobre a terra!	14 When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the desert was something fine and granular, asfine as hoarfrost on the ground.
15 Vendo isso, disseram os filhos de Israel uns aos outros: "Que é isso?", pois não sabiam o que era. Moisés disse-lhes: "Este é o pão que o Senhor vos manda para comer.	15 As soon as the Israelites saw this, they said to one another, 'What is that ?' not knowing what it was.'That', Moses told them, 'is the food which Yahweh has given you to eat.
16 Eis o que vos ordena o Senhor: ajunte cada um o quanto lhe for necessário para comer; para aqueles que estão em sua tenda, um gomor por cabeça, segundo o número das pessoas."	16 These are Yahweh's orders: Each of you must collect as much as he needs to eat -- a homer perhead for each person in his tent.'
17 Assim fizeram os israelitas: ajuntaram uns mais, outros menos.	17 The Israelites did this. They col ected it, some more, some less.
18 Mas, quando se media com o gomor, aconteceu que o que tinha ajuntado muito não tinha demais e, ao que tinha ajuntado pouco, não lhe faltava: cada um havia recolhido segundo a sua necessidade.	18 When they measured out what they had col ected by the homer, no one who had collected more hadtoo much, no one who had col ected less had too little. Each had col ected as much as he needed to eat.
19 Moisés disse-lhes: "Ninguém reserve dele para o dia seguinte."	19 Moses then said, 'No one may keep any of it for tomorrow.'
20 Alguns não o ouviram e guardaram dele até pela manhã; mas criou vermes e cheirou mal. Moisés irritou-se contra eles.	20 But some of them took no notice of Moses and kept part of it for the fol owing day, and it bredmaggots and smelt foul; and Moses was angry with them.
21 Todas as manhãs fizeram a sua provisão, cada um segundo suas necessidades. E, quando vinha o calor do sol, derretia-se.	21 Morning by morning they collected it, each man as much as he needed to eat, and once the sun grewhot, it melted away.
22 No sexto dia, recolheram uma dupla quantidade de alimento, dois gomores para cada um. Vieram todos os chefes da assembléia e contaram-no a Moisés.	22 Now, on the sixth day they col ected twice the amount of food: two homer per person, and al theleaders of the community came and told Moses this.
23 Este lhes disse: "É isso o que o Senhor ordenou. Amanhã é um dia de repouso, o sábado consagrado ao Senhor. Por isso, o que tendes a cozer no forno, cozei-o, e o que tendes a cozer em água, cozei-o; e o que sobrar, ponde-o de lado até pela manhã."	23 Moses replied, 'This is what Yahweh said, "Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a Sabbath sacred toYahweh. Bake what you want to bake, boil what you want to boil; put aside what is left over, to be kept fortomorrow."
24 Guardaram-no até o dia seguinte, segundo a ordem de Moisés; e não cheirou mal, nem se acharam vermes nele.	24 So, as Moses ordered, they put it aside for the fol owing day, and its smel was not foul nor werethere maggots in it.
25 "Comei-o hoje, disse Moisés, porque é o dia do sábado do Senhor; hoje não o achareis no campo.	25 'Eat it today,' Moses said, 'for today is a Sabbath for Yahweh; you will find none in the fields today.
26 Durante seis dias o ajuntareis; mas o sétimo é o sábado: nele não haverá.	26 For six days you wil col ect it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there wil be none.'
27 {No sétimo dia alguns saíram para fazer sua provisão, mas nada encontraram.	27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to col ect it, but they found none.
28 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés: ?Até quando vos recusareis a observar meus mandamentos e minhas leis??}	28 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'How much longer wil you refuse to obey my commandments and laws?
29 Considerai que, se o Senhor vos deu o sábado, vos dá ele no sexto dia alimento para dois dias. Fique cada um onde está, e ninguém saia de sua habitação no sétimo dia".	29 Look, Yahweh has given you the Sabbath; this is why he gives you two days' food on the sixth day;each of you must stay in his place; on the seventh day no one may leave his home.'
30 Assim o povo repousou no sétimo dia.	30 So on the seventh day the people rested.
31 Os israelitas deram a esse alimento o nome de maná. Assemelhava-se à semente de coentro: era branco e tinha o sabor de uma torta de mel.	31 The House of Israel named it 'manna'. It was like coriander seed; it was white and its taste was likethat of wafers made with honey.
32 Moisés disse: "Eis o que ordena o Senhor: que se encha dele um gomor para ser conservado para vossas gerações futuras, a fim de que vejam o pão com que vos sustentei no deserto, depois de vos ter tirado do Egito".	32 Moses then said, 'These are Yahweh's orders: Fil a homer with it and preserve it for yourdescendants, so that they can see the bread on which I fed you in the desert when I brought you out of Egypt.'
33 E Moisés disse a Aarão: "Toma uma vasilha e põe nela a quantia de um gomor de maná, e deposita-o diante do Senhor, a fim de conservá-lo para vossos descendentes".	33 Moses then said to Aaron, 'Take a jar and in it put a full homer of manna and store it in Yahweh'spresence, to be kept for your descendants.'
34 Aarão, segundo a ordem do Senhor a Moisés, depositou-o diante do Testemunho para ser conservado.	34 Accordingly, Aaron stored it in front of the Testimony, to be preserved, as Yahweh had orderedMoses.
35 Os israelitas comeram o maná durante quarenta anos, até a sua chegada a uma terra habitada. Comeram o maná até que chegaram aos confins da terra de Canaã.	35 The Israelites ate manna for forty years, up to the time they reached inhabited country: they atemanna up to the time they reached the frontiers of Canaan.
36 {O gomor é a décima parte do efá.}	36 A homer is one-tenth of an ephah.
