Livro de Neemias 6

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sanabalat, Tobias, Gossem o árabe, e outros inimigos nossos, souberam que eu havia reconstruído a muralha e que não havia mais brechas; entretanto, até aquele momento eu não havia ainda colocado os batentes nas portas.	1 When Sanbal at, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and our other enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wal andthat not a single gap was left -- though at that time I had not fixed the doors to the gates-
2 Mandaram solicitar-me uma entrevista com eles numa das aldeias do vale de Ono. Projetavam fazer-me mal.	2 Sanbal at and Geshem sent me this message, 'Come and meet us at Ha-Chephirim in the Vale of Ono.'But they had evil designs on me.
3 Enviei-lhes mensageiros para dizer-lhes: Estou em vias de executar um trabalho importante; não posso descer. Não tenho desculpa para interromper meu trabalho e não posso deixar a obra para descer a vós.	3 So I sent messengers to them to say, 'I am engaged in a great undertaking, so I cannot come down.Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?'
4 Quatro vezes eles me endereçaram a mesma mensagem, e eu cada vez enviava-lhes a mesma resposta.	4 Four times they sent me the same invitation and I made them the same reply.
5 Pela quinta vez Sanabalat fez-me a mesma proposta por um seu servo, o qual, desta vez, trazia na mão uma carta aberta	5 The fifth time, with the same purpose in mind, Sanballat sent me his servant bearing an open letter.
6 que continha o seguinte: Foi divulgado entre as gentes, e Gossem afirma que, se tu reconstróis a muralha, é porque tu e os judeus estais projetando uma revolta. E, pelo que se diz, desejas tornar-te o rei deles,	6 It ran, 'There is a rumour among the nations -- and Gashmu confirms it -- that you and the Jews arethinking of rebel ing, which is why you are rebuilding the wal , and you intend to become their king;
7 e terias mesmo enviado profetas para proclamar-te rei de Judá em Jerusalém. Todos esses boatos chegarão aos ouvidos do rei. Vem, pois, e entendamo-nos.	7 and that you have even briefed prophets to acclaim you in Jerusalem with the cry, "There is a king inJudah!" Now, these rumours are going to reach the king; so you had better come and discuss them with us.'
8 Eu lhes respondi: Nada existe de verdadeiro no que dizes: foste tu que inventaste tudo isso.	8 To this I sent him the fol owing reply, 'As regards what you say, nothing of the sort has occurred; it is afigment of your own imagination.'
9 Todos procuravam intimidar-nos. Diziam entre si: Fatigar-se-ão de tal modo que abandonarão o trabalho; este jamais será terminado. Agora, pois, ó meu Deus, sustentai os meus braços!	9 For they were all trying to terrorise us, thinking, 'They wil become demoralised over the work and it wilnot get finished.' But my morale rose even higher.
10 Fui depois à casa de Semaías, filho de Dalaías, filho de Metabeel, que se tinha fechado em sua residência. Vamos juntos, disse-me ele, à casa de Deus, ao interior do templo, e fechemos as portas do santuário, porque procuram matar-te; nesta mesma noite virão liquidar-te.	10 Then, when I went to visit Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, since he was prevented fromcoming to me, he said: We must gather at the Temple of God, inside the sanctuary itself; we must shut thesanctuary doors, for they are coming to kil you, they are coming to kil you tonight!
11 Respondi-lhe: Como! Então um homem como eu há de fugir? Por outra parte, como pode um homem como eu entrar no templo sem perder a vida? Ali não entrarei.	11 But I retorted, 'Should a man like me run away? Would a man like me go into the Temple to save hislife? I shal not go in!'
12 Eu compreendera, com efeito, que não fora Deus quem o enviara; se ele tinha pronunciado sobre mim tal predição, era porque Tobias e Sanabalat o haviam subornado.	12 I realised that God had not sent him to say this, but that he had produced this prophecy for mebecause Tobiah was paying him
13 Eles o faziam para intimidar-me e fazer-me pecar segundo o seu desejo; isto lhes permitiria cobrir-me de opróbrios e lançar-me em má reputação.	13 to terrorise me into doing as he said and committing a sin, so that they would have grounds forblackening my reputation and blaming me.
14 Lembrai-vos, ó meu Deus, das maldades de Tobias e de Sanabalat; e também do profeta Noadias, bem como dos outros profetas que procuravam atemorizar-me.	14 Remember Tobiah, my God, for what he did; and Noadiah the prophetess, and the other prophetswho tried to terrorise me.
15 Terminou-se a muralha no vigésimo quinto dia do mês de Elul, em cinqüenta e dois dias.	15 The wall was finished within fifty-two days, on the twenty-fifth of Elul.
16 Quando nossos inimigos souberam disso, encheram-se de temor todas as nações vizinhas: pois seu ânimo arrefeceu e reconheceram que, se aquela empresa fora levada a bom termo, era graças ao nosso Deus.	16 When al our enemies heard about it and al the surrounding nations saw it, they thought it a wonderful thing, because they realised that this work had been accomplished by the power of our God.
17 Naquele tempo, Tobias mantinha uma correspondência contínua com certas pessoas importantes de Judá.	17 During this same period, the nobles of Judah kept sending letter after letter to Tobiah, and letters fromTobiah kept arriving for them;
18 Muitos, com efeito, estavam-lhe unidos por juramento, pois ele era genro de Sequenias, filho de Area, e Joanã, seu filho, era casado com a filha de Mosolão, filho de Baraquias.	18 for he had many sworn to his interest in Judah, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah,and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshul am son of Berechiah.
19 Até mesmo o louvavam em minha presença e participavam-lhe as minhas palavras. Esse Tobias era quem me remetia cartas para atemorizar-me.	19 They even cried up his good deeds in my presence, and they reported what I said back to him. AndTobiah kept sending letters to terrorise me.
