II Livro das Crônicas 14

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Abia adormeceu com seus pais e foi sepultado na cidade de Davi. Seu filho Asa sucedeu-lhe no trono. Durante sua vida, a terra conheceu dez anos de tranqüilidade.	1 Asa did what Yahweh his God regards as good and right.
2 Asa fez o que era bom e justo aos olhos do Senhor, seu Deus.	2 He abolished the foreign altars and the high places, broke the pil ars, cut down the sacred poles,
3 Destruiu os altares dos deuses estrangeiros e os lugares altos; quebrou as estelas e cortou as asserás.	3 and urged Judah to seek Yahweh, God of their ancestors, and to observe the law and commandment.
4 Ordenou aos filhos de Judá que buscassem o Senhor, Deus de seus pais, e que pusessem em prática a Lei e seus mandamentos.	4 Because he abolished the high places and incense altars through the towns of Judah, the kingdomunder him was undisturbed.
5 Fez desaparecer de todas as cidades de Judá os lugares altos e os obeliscos. Sob seu reinado o reino esteve em paz.	5 He rebuilt the fortified towns of Judah, since the country was at peace and free of war during thoseyears, because Yahweh had granted him peace.
6 Durante esse tempo de tranqüilidade, construiu cidades fortificadas em Judá. Efetivamente, não houve guerra contra ele durante esses anos, porque o Senhor lhe concedeu descanso.	6 'Let us rebuild these towns,' he told Judah, 'let us surround them with wal and tower, with gate andbar while the country is still ours, for we have sought Yahweh our God and he has sought us and given us peaceal around.' They built and prospered.
7 Construamos, disse ele aos judeus, essas cidades, e cerquemo-las de muralhas, torres, portas e ferrolhos: a terra está ainda livre diante de nós porque temos procurado o Senhor, nosso Deus, e por isso ele nos concedeu a paz com todos os nossos vizinhos. Dispuseram-se, pois, a esse trabalho e o levaram a bom termo.	7 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men of Judah armed with shields and spears and twohundred and eighty thousand men of Benjamin armed with shields and bows, al of them outstanding soldiers.
8 Asa possuía um exército composto de trezentos mil homens de Judá, que carregavam escudo e lança, e um de duzentos e oitenta mil de Benjamim, que carregavam escudo e entesavam o arco, todos valentes guerreiros.	8 Zerah the Cushite took the field against them with an army a mil ion strong and three hundredchariots, and penetrated to Mareshah.
9 Zara, o etíope, atacou-os com um exército de um milhão de homens e trezentos carros, e avançou até Maresa.	9 Asa took the field against him and the battle-lines were drawn up in the Valley of Zephathah, atMareshah.
10 Asa saiu-lhe ao encontro e eles se formaram para a batalha no vale de Sefata, perto de Maresa.	10 Asa then cal ed on Yahweh his God and said, 'Yahweh, numbers and strength make no difference toyou when you give your help. Help us, Yahweh our God, for, relying on you, we are confronting this horde inyour name. Yahweh, you are our God. Human strength cannot prevail against you!'
11 Asa invocou o Senhor, seu Deus, nestes termos: Senhor, não vos é mais difícil ajudar o fraco do que o forte. Vinde em nosso socorro, nosso Deus! É em vós que nos apoiamos, é em vosso nome que viemos contra essa multidão. Senhor, vós sois nosso Deus; que não haja um só homem que prevaleça contra vós!	11 Yahweh routed the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled,
12 O Senhor feriu os etíopes, diante de Asa e dos homens de Judá. Fugiram.	12 and Asa pursued them with his army as far as Gerar. So many of the Cushites fel that they wereunable to survive. They were cut to pieces by Yahweh and his army. They carried off a great deal of booty,
13 Asa e seu exército perseguiram-nos até Gerara, e deles tombou tão grande número que nem sequer um pôde salvar-se, destruídos como foram diante do Senhor e seu exército. Judá trouxe um grande despojo.	13 they destroyed al the towns round Gerar -- for a panic from Yahweh had seized the towns -- andplundered all the towns since they were ful of loot.
14 Eles feriram todas as cidades dos arredores de Gerara, pois o terror do Senhor se tinha infundido neles. Pilharam-nos, porque eles possuíam um importante despojo.	14 They also routed the cattle-owners and carried off great numbers of sheep and camels; then theyreturned to Jerusalem.
15 Feriram também os redis dos rebanhos e capturaram grande número de ovelhas e camelos. Em seguida, retornaram a Jerusalém.
