SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 No décimo oitavo ano de Josafá, rei de Judá, Jorão, filho de Acab, tornou-se rei de Israel em Samaria, e reinou durante doze anos.	1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.
2 Fez o mal aos olhos do Senhor, mas não tanto como seu pai e sua mãe, porque tirou a estela que seu pai tinha erigido a Baal.	2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.
3 Perseverou todavia nos pecados de Jeroboão, filho de Nabat, que fez pecar Israel, e não se apartou deles.	3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.
4 Mesa, rei de Moab, possuidor de muitos rebanhos, pagava ao rei de Israel, à guisa de tributo, cem mil cordeiros e a lã de cem mil carneiros.	4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.
5 Morrendo, porém, Acab, ele libertou-se do rei de Israel.	5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.
6 O rei Jorão saiu de Samaria e passou em revista todo o Israel.	6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.
7 Em seguida mandou dizer a Josafá, rei de Judá: O rei de Moab rebelou-se contra mim; queres vir comigo atacá-lo? Sim, respondeu Josafá; farei o que fizeres, meu povo fará o que fizer o teu, minha cavalaria fará o que fizer a tua.	7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'
8 E ajuntou: Por onde iremos? Pelo caminho do deserto de Edom.	8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.
9 O rei de Israel, o rei de Judá e o rei de Edom puseram-se em marcha, mas depois de darem uma volta de sete dias de marcha, veio a faltar água, tanto para o exército como para os animais que o seguiam.	9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.
10 O rei de Israel exclamou: Ai! O Senhor juntou aqui os três reis para entregá-los ao rei de Moab!	10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'
11 Josafá disse: Não há por aqui algum profeta do Senhor, para por meio dele consultarmos o Senhor? Sim, respondeu um dos servos do rei de Israel, está aqui Eliseu, filho de Safat, que derramava água nas mãos de Elias.	11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'
12 Josafá disse: A palavra do Senhor está com ele. E desceram a ele Josafá, o rei de Israel e o rei de Edom.	12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.
13 Eliseu disse ao rei de Israel: Que queres de mim, ó rei? Vai procurar os profetas de teu pai e de tua mãe. Não, disse-lhe o rei de Israel, porque o Senhor reuniu aqui estes três reis para entregá-los ao rei de Moab.	13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,
14 Eliseu exclamou: Pela vida do Senhor dos exércitos a quem sirvo, se não fosse em atenção a Josafá, rei de Judá, eu não faria caso algum de ti, nem mesmo poria em ti os meus olhos.	14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.
15 Mas agora trazei-me um tocador de harpa. Apenas fez o tocador vibrar as cordas, veio a mão do Senhor sobre Eliseu,	15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him
16 e este disse: Eis o que diz o Senhor: Cavai neste vale fossas e fossas!	16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"
17 Eis o que diz o Senhor: Não sentireis vento, nem vereis chuva, e contudo este vale se encherá de água; e bebereis vós, vossos rebanhos e vossos animais de carga.	17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."
18 Porém, isto é pouco aos olhos do Senhor: ele vai entregar também Moab nas vossas mãos.	18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.
19 Destruireis todas as cidades fortes, as cidades mais importantes, derrubareis todas as árvores frutíferas, tapareis todas as fontes e cobrireis de pedras todos os campos férteis.	19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'
20 No dia seguinte pela manhã, à hora da oblação, desceram as águas do lado de Edom, e a terra encheu-se de água.	20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.
21 Ouvindo os moabitas que aqueles reis vinham atacá-los, mobilizaram todos os que estavam na idade de pegar em armas e foram para a fronteira.	21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.
22 Na manhã seguinte, quando o sol se levantava sobre as águas, os moabitas viram diante de si as águas vermelhas como sangue.	22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.
23 É sangue!, exclamaram eles; os reis pelejaram entre si e destruíram-se mutuamente. Vamos, Moab, à presa!	23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'
24 Logo, porém, que chegaram para atacar o acampamento dos israelitas, estes levantaram-se e feriram os moabitas, que fugiram diante deles. E, enquanto os feriam, iam penetrando mais adentro na sua terra.	24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.
25 Destruíram as cidades, encheram toda a terra fértil de pedras, que cada um lançou, entupiram todas as fontes, derrubaram todas as árvores frutíferas, de modo que só ficaram as pedras da cidade de Quir-Caroset, que tinha sido cercada e atacada pelos fundibulários.	25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.
26 Vendo o rei de Moab que perdia o combate, tomou consigo setecentos homens armados de espada para abrir caminho até o rei de Edom, mas não conseguiu.	26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.
27 Tomando então o seu filho primogênito, que deveria reinar depois dele, ofereceu-o em holocausto sobre a muralha. Isso provocou uma tal indignação entre os israelitas, que estes se retiraram e voltaram para a sua terra.	27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.
