SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Elias, o tesbita, um habitante de Galaad, veio dizer a Acab: Pela vida do Senhor, Deus de Israel, a quem sirvo, não haverá nestes anos orvalho nem chuva, senão quando eu o disser.	1 Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, 'By the life of Yahweh, God of Israel, whom Iserve, there will be neither dew nor rain these coming years unless I give the word.'
2 Em seguida, a palavra do Senhor foi-lhe dirigida nestes termos:	2 The word of Yahweh came to him,
3 Vai-te daqui; retira-te para as bandas do oriente e vai esconder-te na torrente de Carit, que está defronte do Jordão.	3 'Go away from here, go east and hide by the torrent of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
4 Beberás da torrente, e ordenei aos corvos que te alimentem.	4 You can drink from the stream, and I have ordered the ravens to bring you food there.'
5 Elias partiu, pois, segundo a palavra do Senhor, e estabeleceu-se junto à torrente de Carit, defronte do Jordão.	5 So he set out and did as Yahweh had said; he went and stayed by the torrent of Cherith, east of theJordan.
6 Os corvos traziam-lhe pão e carne, pela manhã e pela tarde, e ele bebia a água da torrente.	6 The ravens brought him bread in the morning and meat in the evening, and he quenched his thirst atthe stream.
7 Passado algum tempo, secou-se a torrente, porque não chovia mais na terra.	7 But after a while the stream dried up, for the country had had no rain.
8 Então o Senhor disse-lhe:	8 And then the word of Yahweh came to him,
9 Vai para Sarepta de Sidon e fixa-te ali: ordenei a uma viúva desse lugar que te sustente.	9 'Up and go to Zarephath in Sidonia, and stay there. I have ordered a widow there to give you food.'
10 Elias pôs-se a caminho para Sarepta. Chegando à porta da cidade, viu uma viúva que ajuntava lenha. Chamou-a e disse-lhe: Por favor, vai buscar-me um pouco de água numa vasilha para que eu beba.	10 So he went off to Sidon. And when he reached the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks.Addressing her he said, 'Please bring a little water in a pitcher for me to drink.'
11 E indo ela buscar-lhe a água, gritou-lhe Elias: Traze-me também um pedaço de pão.	11 She was on her way to fetch it when he cal ed after her. 'Please', he said, 'bring me a scrap of breadin your hand.'
12 Pela vida de Deus, respondeu a mulher, não tenho pão cozido: só tenho um punhado de farinha na panela e um pouco de óleo na ânfora; estava justamente apanhando dois pedaços de lenha para preparar esse resto para mim e meu filho, a fim de o comermos, e depois morrermos.	12 'As Yahweh your God lives,' she replied, 'I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jarand a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, andthen we shall die.'
13 Elias replicou: Não temas; volta e faze como disseste; mas prepara-me antes com isso um pãozinho, e traze-mo; depois prepararás o resto para ti e teu filho.	13 But Elijah said to her, 'Do not be afraid, go and do as you have said; but first make a little scone of itfor me and bring it to me, and then make some for yourself and for your son.
14 Porque eis o que diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: a farinha que está na panela não se acabará, e a ânfora de azeite não se esvaziará, até o dia em que o Senhor fizer chover sobre a face da terra.	14 For Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: Jar of meal shal not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied,before the day when Yahweh sends rain on the face of the earth.'
15 A mulher foi e fez o que disse Elias. Durante muito tempo ela teve o que comer, e a sua casa, e Elias.	15 The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son.
16 A farinha não se acabou na panela nem se esgotou o óleo da ânfora, como o Senhor o tinha dito pela boca de Elias.	16 The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as Yahweh had foretold through Elijah.
17 Algum tempo depois, o filho desta mulher, dona da casa, adoeceu, e seu mal era tão grave que já não respirava.	17 It happened after this that the son of the mistress of the house fel sick; his il ness was so severe thatin the end he expired.
18 A mulher disse a Elias: Que há entre nós dois, homem de Deus? Vieste, pois, à minha casa para lembrar-me os meus pecados e matar o meu filho?	18 And the woman said to Elijah, 'What quarrel have you with me, man of God? Have you come here tobring my sins home to me and to kill my son?'
19 Dá-me o teu filho, respondeu-lhe Elias. Ele tomou-o dos braços de sua mãe e levou-o ao quarto de cima onde dormia e deitou-o em seu leito.	19 'Give me your son,' he said and, taking him from her lap, he carried him to the upper room where hewas staying and laid him on his bed.
20 Em seguida, orou ao Senhor, dizendo: Senhor, meu Deus, até a uma viúva, que me hospeda, quereis afligir, matando-lhe o filho?	20 He cried out to Yahweh, 'Yahweh my God, by kil ing her son do you mean to bring grief even to thewidow who is looking after me?'
21 Estendeu-se em seguida sobre o menino por três vezes, invocando de novo o Senhor: Senhor, meu Deus, rogo-vos que a alma deste menino volte a ele.	21 He stretched himself on the child three times and cried out to Yahweh, 'Yahweh my God, may thesoul of this child, I beg you, come into him again!'
22 O Senhor ouviu a oração de Elias: a alma do menino voltou a ele, e ele recuperou a vida.	22 Yahweh heard Elijah's prayer and the child's soul came back into his body and he revived.
23 Elias tomou o menino, desceu do quarto superior ao interior da casa e entregou-o à mãe, dizendo: Vê: teu filho vive.	23 Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to hismother. 'Look,' Elijah said, 'your son is alive.'
24 A mulher exclamou: Agora vejo que és um homem de Deus e que a palavra de Deus está verdadeiramente em teus lábios.	24 And the woman replied, 'Now I know you are a man of God and the word of Yahweh in your mouth istruth itself.'
