Genesis 26

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Sobreveio uma fome à região {além da primeira fome que houve no tempo de Abraão}, e Isaac foi ter com Abimelec, rei dos filisteus em Gerara.	1 There was a famine in the country -- different from the previous famine which took place in the time ofAbraham -- and Isaac went to Abimelech, the Philistine king at Gerar.
2 O Senhor apareceu-lhe e disse-lhe: "Não desças ao Egito; fica na terra que eu te indico.	2 Yahweh had appeared to him and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the country which I shalpoint out to you.
3 Habita nela; eu estou contigo e te abençoarei, porque é a ti e à tua posteridade que darei toda esta terra, e cumprirei o juramento que fiz ao teu pai Abraão.	3 Remain for the present in that country; I shal be with you and bless you, for I shal give al thesecountries to you and your descendants in fulfilment of the oath I swore to your father Abraham.
4 Multiplicarei tua posteridade como as estrelas do céu, dar-lhe-ei todas estas regiões, e nela serão benditas todas as nações da terra,	4 I shal make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I shal give them al thesecountries, and al nations on earth wil bless themselves by your descendants
5 porque Abraão obedeceu à minha voz e observou os meus preceitos, meus mandamentos e minhas leis."	5 in return for Abraham's obedience; for he kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes and mylaws.'
6 Isaac ficou, pois, em Gerara.	6 So Isaac stayed at Gerar.
7 Quando os habitantes da região o interrogavam a respeito de sua mulher, ele dizia-lhes que era sua irmã, pois respondendo "É minha mulher", temia que os homens daquele lugar o matassem por causa de Rebeca, que era muito bela.	7 When the people of the place asked him about his wife he replied, 'She is my sister,' for he was afraidto say, 'She is my wife,' thinking, 'The people of the place wil kil me because of Rebekah, since she is beautiful.'
8 E, como sua estada ali se prolongasse, aconteceu que um dia, olhando Abimelec pela janela, viu Isaac que acariciava Rebeca, sua mulher.	8 When he had been there some time, Abimelech the Philistine king happened to look out of the windowand saw Isaac fondling his wife Rebekah.
9 Mandou chamá-lo e disse-lhe: "É evidente que é tua mulher! E como dizias tu que era tua irmã." "Porque, respondeu Isaac, eu temia que me matassem por causa dela."	9 Abimelech summoned Isaac and said to him, 'Surely she must be your wife! How could you have said,"She is my sister"?' Isaac replied, 'Because I thought I might be kil ed on her account.'
10 Abimelec replicou: "Que nos fizeste? Um pouco mais e alguém do povo teria abusado de tua mulher, e terias atraído o pecado sobre nós!"	10 Abimelech said, 'What a thing to do to us! One of the people might easily have slept with your wife.We should have incurred guilt, thanks to you.'
11 Então Abimelec mandou publicar diante de todo o povo que seria morto quem quer que tocasse naquele homem ou em sua mulher.	11 Then Abimelech issued this order to al the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife wil be putto death.'
12 Isaac semeou naquela terra, e colheu o cêntuplo naquele mesmo ano; o Senhor o abençoava.	12 Isaac sowed his crops in that country, and that year he reaped a hundredfold. Yahweh blessed him
13 E este homem cresceu, e seus bens foram aumentando cada vez mais; tornou-se extremamente rico.	13 and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he was very rich indeed.
14 Possuía rebanhos de ovelhas e de bois e numerosos escravos. E os filisteus o invejavam.	14 He acquired flocks and herds and a large retinue. The Philistines began to envy him.
15 Por isso, entupiram todos os poços que tinham cavado os escravos de seu pai Abraão, quando este ainda vivia.	15 The Philistines had blocked up al the wel s dug by his father's servants -- in the days of his fatherAbraham -- fil ing them in with earth.
16 Abimelec disse-lhe: "Aparta-te de nós, pois te tornaste muito mais poderoso do que nós."	16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, 'You must leave us, for you have become much more powerful thanwe are.'
17 Partiu Isaac e, tendo levantado o seu acampamento no vale de Gerara, habitou aí.	17 So Isaac left; he pitched camp in the Val ey of Gerar and there he stayed.
18 Abriu de novo os poços cavados outrora, no tempo de seu pai Abraão, que os filisteus tinham entupido depois de sua morte, e deu-lhes os mesmos nomes que o seu pai lhes tinha dado.	18 Isaac reopened the wel s dug by the servants of his father Abraham and blocked up by thePhilistines after Abraham's death, and he gave them the same names as his father had given them.
19 Seus servos cavaram outro poço no vale, e encontraram ali uma fonte de água viva.	19 But when Isaac's servants, digging in the val ey, found a wel of spring-water there,
20 Mas os pastores de Gerara começaram a disputar com os pastores de Isaac: "Esta água é nossa", diziam eles. Isaac chamou então a esse poço Esec, porque lho tinham contestado.	20 the herdsmen of Gerar disputed it with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, 'That water is ours!' So Isaacnamed the wel Esek, because they had disputed with him.
21 Abriram seus pastores um segundo poço, mas surgiu uma outra disputa, e por isso pôs-lhe o nome de Sitna.	21 They dug another wel , and there was a dispute over that one too; so he named it Sitnah.
22 Partindo em seguida dali, abriu outro poço, sobre o qual não houve mais discussão, e pôs-lhe o nome de Rehobot, "porque agora, disse ele, o Senhor nos pôs ao largo, e prosperaremos na terra."	22 Then he left there, and dug another wel , and since there was no dispute over this one, he named itRehoboth, saying, 'Now Yahweh has made room for us to thrive in the country.'
23 Dali, Isaac subiu a Bersabéia.	23 From there he went up to Beersheba.
24 Naquela mesma noite, o Senhor apareceu-lhe e disse-lhe: "Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, teu pai. Nada temas, estou contigo. Eu te abençoarei e multiplicarei tua descendência por causa de Abraão, meu servo."	24 Yahweh appeared to him the same night and said: I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not beafraid, for I am with you. I shall bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.
25 Isaac construiu um altar nesse lugar e invocou o nome do Senhor. Levantou depois ali sua tenda e seus escravos cavaram um poço.	25 There he built an altar and invoked the name of Yahweh. There he pitched his tent, and there Isaac'sservants sank a wel .
26 Abimelec veio de Gerara procurá-lo, com Ocozat, seu amigo, e Ficol, general do seu exército.	26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see him, with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of hisarmy.
27 Isaac disse: "Por que me procurais, já que me detestais e me expulsastes do meio de vós?"	27 Isaac said to them, 'Why do you come to me since you hate me, and have made me leave you?'
28 Eles responderam: "Nós vimos que o Senhor está contigo, e pensamos conosco: Haja um juramento entre nós e ti. Queremos, pois, fazer aliança contigo.	28 'It became clear to us that Yahweh was with you,' they replied, 'and so we thought, "It is time to havea treaty sworn between us, between us and you." So let us make a covenant with you:
29 Jura que não nos farás nenhum mal, assim como também nós não tocamos em nada do que é teu e só te temos feito bem, deixando-te partir em paz. Agora, tu és o bendito do Senhor."	29 that you will not do us any harm, since we never molested you but were unfailingly kind to you andlet you go away in peace. Henceforth, Yahweh's blessing on you!'
30 Isaac preparou-lhes um banquete, e eles comeram e beberam.	30 He then made them a feast and they ate and drank.
31 No dia seguinte pela manhã, fizeram mutuamente os seus juramentos; Isaac despediu-os em seguida, e eles afastaram-se dele em paz.	31 Early next morning, they exchanged oaths. Then Isaac bade them farewell and they left him asfriends.
32 Nesse mesmo dia, os escravos de Isaac vieram dar-lhe notícias do poço que estavam cavando: "Encontramos água", disseram eles.	32 It happened, the same day, that Isaac's servants brought him news about the well they had beendigging. 'We have found water!' they said to him.
33 Ele pôs a esse poço o nome de Sibea. De onde vem o nome de Bersabéia, nome que a cidade conserva até o dia de hoje.	33 So he cal ed the wel Sheba, and hence the town is named Beersheba to this day.
34 Esaú, com a idade de quarenta anos, tomou por mulheres Judite, filha de Beeri, o hiteu, e Basemat, filha de Elon, o hiteu.	34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite.
35 Elas foram um motivo de desgosto para Isaac e Rebeca.	35 These were a bitter disappointment to Isaac and Rebekah.
