LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Balaam vide che era buono agli occhi del Signore benedire Israele, non andò come altre volte incontro a presagi e girò la sua faccia verso la piana deserta.	1 Balaam then saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel. He did not go as before to seek omens butturned towards the desert.
2 Balaam alzò i suoi occhi, vide Israele disposto per tribù e su di lui fu lo spirito di Dio.	2 Raising his eyes Balaam saw Israel settled tribe by tribe; the spirit of God came on him
3 Pronunciò il suo poema e disse: "Oracolo di Balaam, figlio di Beor, oracolo dell'uomo con l'occhio aperto,	3 and he declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
4 oracolo di chi ascolta parole di Dio e conosce la scienza dell'Altissimo, di chi vede la visione dell'Onnipotente, cade e i suoi occhi si aprono.	4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receivesthe divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
5 Come sono belle le tue tende, Giacobbe, le tue dimore, Israele.	5 How fair your tents are, Jacob, how fair your dwel ings, Israel,
6 Si distendono come torrenti, come orti presso un fiume, come aloe che ha piantato il Signore, come cedri presso l'acqua.	6 like val eys that stretch afar, like gardens by the banks of a river, like aloes planted by Yahweh, likecedars beside the waters!
7 Scorre l'acqua dai suoi pozzi sorgivi, il suo seme è in acque abbondanti: si eleva più di Agag il suo re, s'innalza il suo regno.	7 A hero arises from their stock, he reigns over countless peoples. His king is greater than Agag, andhis kingship held in honour.
8 Dio l'ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto, come corna di bufalo è per lui: divora le nazioni che l'avversano, consuma le loro ossa, spezza le sue frecce.	8 God has brought him out of Egypt, is like the wild ox's horns to him. He devours the corpses of hisenemies, breaking their bones, piercing them with his arrows.
9 Si china, giace come un leone, come una leonessa: chi lo farà alzare? Sia benedetto chi ti benedice, maledetto chi ti maledice".	9 He has crouched, he has lain down, like a lion, like a lioness; who dare rouse him? Blessed be thosewho bless you, and accursed be those who curse you!
10 Lo sdegno di Balak divampò contro Balaam; batté le mani e disse a Balaam: "Ti ho chiamato per maledire i miei nemici, ed ecco che li hai benedetti per tre volte!	10 Balak flew into a rage with Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to Balaam, 'I brought youto curse my enemies, and you have insisted on blessing them three times over!
11 Ora fuggi a casa tua. Ti avevo detto di onorarti, ma ecco che il Signore non ha voluto onorarti".	11 So now go home as fast as your legs can carry you. I promised to load you with honours. Yahwehhimself has deprived you of them.'
12 Balaam disse a Balak: "Anche ai messaggeri che mi inviasti, non parlai forse dicendo:	12 Balaam retorted to Balak, 'Did I not tel the messengers you sent me,
13 "Se Balak mi desse la sua casa piena di argento e oro, non potrei trasgredire l'ordine del Signore per fare bene o male, senza dire quello che il Signore mi ha detto"?	13 "Even if Balak gave me his house ful of gold and silver I could not go against Yahweh's order anddo anything of my own accord, whether for good or il ; whatever Yahweh says is what I shal say"?
14 Ora ecco ritorno al mio popolo: vieni, voglio informarti di quello che questo popolo farà al tuo popolo in avvenire".	14 Now that I am going back to my own folk, let me warn you what this people wil do to your people, indays to come.'
15 Pronunciò il suo poema e disse: "Oracolo di Balaam, figlio di Beor, oracolo dell'uomo aperto d'occhio,	15 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of theman with far-seeing eyes,
16 oracolo di chi ascolta parole di Dio, e conosce la scienza dell'Altissimo; vede quello che l'Onnipotente gli fa vedere, cade e gli occhi si aprono.	16 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, of one who knows the knowledge of the MostHigh. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receives the divine answer, and his eyes are opened.
17 Lo vedo, ma non ora, lo guardo, ma non da vicino: una stella si muove da Giacobbe, si alza uno scettro da Israele, spezza i fianchi di Moab, il cranio di tutti i figli di Set.	17 I see him -- but not in the present. I perceive him -- but not close at hand: a star is emerging fromJacob, a sceptre is rising from Israel, to strike the brow of Moab, the skul s of al the children of Seth.
18 Suo possesso sarà Edom, suo possesso Seir, suo nemico: Israele agirà con potenza;	18 Edom too wil be a conquered land, Seir too wil be a conquered land, when Israel exerts hisstrength,
19 Giacobbe dominerà i suoi nemici, farà perire lo scampato da Ar".	19 when Jacob tramples on his enemies and destroys the last survivors of Ar.
20 Vide Amalek, pronunziò il suo poema e disse: "Primizia delle nazioni è Amalek, ma il suo avvenire si perde per sempre".	20 Balaam then looked at Amalek and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Amalek, the earliest of nations!But his posterity wil perish forever.
21 Vide i Keniti, pronunziò il suo poema e disse: "Stabile è la tua dimora, o Caino, posto sulla roccia il tuo nido:	21 He then looked at the Kenites and declaimed his poem, as fol ows: Your dwel ing was firm, Kain,your nest perched high in the rock.
22 eppure sarà dato alla distruzione fino a quando Assur ti farà prigioniero".	22 But the nest belongs to Beor; how long wil you be Asshur's captive?
23 Pronunciò poi ancora il suo poema e disse: "Guai: chi vivrà se lo prende Dio.	23 He then declaimed his poem, as fol ows: The Sea-people are gathering in the north,
24 Navi da parte di Cipro: opprimono Assur, opprimono Eber; anch'egli si perde per sempre".	24 the vessels from the coasts of Kittim. They wil bear down on Asshur, bear down on Eber; he too willperish forever.
25 Poi Balaam si alzò, se ne andò e ritornò alla sua regione. Anche Balak se ne andò per la sua strada.	25 Balaam then got up, left and went home, and Balak too went his way.
