LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 C'era nella regione di Uz un uomo chiamato Giobbe. Quest'uomo era integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male.	1 In the land of Uz there was a blameless and upright man named Job, who feared God and avoided evil.
2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie.	2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him;
3 Possedeva settemila pecore, tremila cammelli, cinquecento coppie di buoi, cinquecento asine e una numerosissima servitù. Quest'uomo era il più ricco fra tutti gli orientali.	3 and he had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a great number of work animals, so that he was greater than any of the men of the East.
4 Ora, i suoi figli solevano celebrare dei banchetti a turno in casa di uno e dell'altro e mandavano a invitare le loro tre sorelle per banchettare insieme.	4 His sons used to take turns giving feasts, sending invitations to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5 Terminato il ciclo dei conviti, Giobbe li faceva venire per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva un olocausto per ognuno di essi, perché diceva: "Forse i miei figli hanno peccato oltraggiando Dio nel loro cuore". Giobbe soleva fare così immancabilmente.	5 And when each feast had run its course, Job would send for them and sanctify them, rising early and offering holocausts for every one of them. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts." This Job did habitually.
6 Però un giorno i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi davanti al Signore e tra di essi venne anche satana.	6 One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them.
7 Il Signore disse a satana: "Da dove vieni?". Satana rispose al Signore: "Dal vagabondare sulla terra dopo averla girata".	7 And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming the earth and patrolling it."
8 E il Signore a satana: "Hai fatto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Sulla terra non c'è un altro come lui: uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male".	8 And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?"
9 Satana rispose al Signore: "Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per niente?	9 But Satan answered the LORD and said, "Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?
10 Non hai forse protetto con uno steccato lui, la sua casa e tutto ciò che possiede? Tu hai benedetto le sue imprese e i suoi greggi si dilatano nella regione.	10 Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land.
11 Ma stendi la tua mano e colpisci i suoi beni e vedrai come ti maledirà in faccia!".	11 But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face."
12 Il Signore disse a satana: "Ecco, tutto ciò che è suo, è in tuo potere; però non portare la tua mano sulla sua persona". E satana si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.	12 And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13 Or avvenne che il giorno in cui i suoi figli e le sue figlie mangiavano e bevevano in casa del loro fratello maggiore,	13 And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
14 giunse un messaggero da Giobbe e disse: "Mentre i buoi stavano arando e le asine erano al pascolo nelle vicinanze,	14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them,
15 irruppero i Sabei, li depredarono e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	15 and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
16 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, bruciò le pecore e i guardiani incenerendoli. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	16 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
17 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I Caldei, divisi in tre gruppi, si precipitarono sui cammelli, li presero e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	17 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
18 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano ancora mangiando e bevendo vino nella casa del loro fratello maggiore,	18 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
19 quando un vento impetuoso venendo da oltre il deserto investì i quattro angoli della casa; questa cadde sui giovani, che sono morti. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	19 when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
20 Allora Giobbe, alzatosi, si strappò il manto, si rase il capo e, caduto a terra, prostrato	20 Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground,
21 disse: "Nudo sono uscito dal ventre di mia madre e nudo vi farò ritorno! Il Signore ha dato e il Signore ha tolto; sia benedetto il nome del Signore".	21 and said, "Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!"
22 In tutto ciò Giobbe non commise peccato né proferì alcuna insolenza contro Dio.	22 In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God.
