LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Asa fece ciò che è buono e giusto agli occhi del Signore, suo Dio.	1 Asa did what Yahweh his God regards as good and right.
2 Rimosse gli altari stranieri e le alture, distrusse le stele e infranse i pali sacri.	2 He abolished the foreign altars and the high places, broke the pil ars, cut down the sacred poles,
3 Ordinò a Giuda di ricercare il Signore, Dio dei loro padri, e di mettere in pratica la legge e i comandamenti.	3 and urged Judah to seek Yahweh, God of their ancestors, and to observe the law and commandment.
4 Da tutte le città di Giuda rimosse le alture e i cippi solari. Il regno godette tranquillità sotto di lui.	4 Because he abolished the high places and incense altars through the towns of Judah, the kingdomunder him was undisturbed.
5 Ricostruì in Giuda le città fortificate, poiché il paese era tranquillo e in quegli anni non si trovava in guerra, poiché il Signore gli aveva concesso quiete.	5 He rebuilt the fortified towns of Judah, since the country was at peace and free of war during thoseyears, because Yahweh had granted him peace.
6 Egli disse a Giuda: "Riedificheremo queste città circondandole di mura, di torri, porte e sbarre, mentre il paese è ancora a nostra disposizione, avendo noi ricercato il Signore, Dio nostro; l'abbiamo ricercato ed egli ci ha concesso pace tutto intorno". Essi dunque riedificarono ed ebbero successo.	6 'Let us rebuild these towns,' he told Judah, 'let us surround them with wal and tower, with gate andbar while the country is still ours, for we have sought Yahweh our God and he has sought us and given us peaceal around.' They built and prospered.
7 Asa disponeva di un esercito di trecentomila uomini in Giuda che portavano il grande scudo e la lancia, e di duecentottantamila in Beniamino che portavano il piccolo scudo e tiravano l'arco. Tutti questi erano valorosi guerrieri.	7 Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men of Judah armed with shields and spears and twohundred and eighty thousand men of Benjamin armed with shields and bows, al of them outstanding soldiers.
8 Contro di loro marciò Zerach, l'etiope, con un esercito di un milione di uomini e con trecento carri e si spinse fino a Maresa.	8 Zerah the Cushite took the field against them with an army a mil ion strong and three hundredchariots, and penetrated to Mareshah.
9 Asa gli andò incontro e si schierarono in battaglia nella valle di Zefata, presso Maresa.	9 Asa took the field against him and the battle-lines were drawn up in the Valley of Zephathah, atMareshah.
10 Asa invocò il Signore, suo Dio: "Signore, per te non c'è differenza tra il soccorrere un potente o uno privo di forza! Soccorrici, Signore, nostro Dio, perché noi ci appoggiamo su di te e nel tuo nome ci siamo mossi contro questa moltitudine; un uomo non prevalga sopra di te!".	10 Asa then cal ed on Yahweh his God and said, 'Yahweh, numbers and strength make no difference toyou when you give your help. Help us, Yahweh our God, for, relying on you, we are confronting this horde inyour name. Yahweh, you are our God. Human strength cannot prevail against you!'
11 Il Signore sconfisse gli Etiopi di fronte ad Asa e di fronte a Giuda e gli Etiopi si diedero alla fuga.	11 Yahweh routed the Cushites before Asa and Judah. The Cushites fled,
12 Allora Asa e quanti erano con lui li inseguirono fino a Gherar. Degli Etiopi caddero tanti che non poterono più riaversi, giacché furono fatti a pezzi di fronte al Signore e al suo esercito. I primi riportarono un abbondantissimo bottino.	12 and Asa pursued them with his army as far as Gerar. So many of the Cushites fel that they wereunable to survive. They were cut to pieces by Yahweh and his army. They carried off a great deal of booty,
13 Poi conquistarono tutte le città intorno a Gherar, perché su di esse era piombato il terrore del Signore. Saccheggiarono tutte le città, nelle quali c'era molto bottino.	13 they destroyed al the towns round Gerar -- for a panic from Yahweh had seized the towns -- andplundered all the towns since they were ful of loot.
14 Assalirono anche le tende dov'era il bestiame, facendo razzie di pecore in grande quantità e di cammelli; indi fecero ritorno a Gerusalemme.	14 They also routed the cattle-owners and carried off great numbers of sheep and camels; then theyreturned to Jerusalem.
