LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Alla mattina per tempo Làbano si levò, baciò i suoi figli e le sue figlie e li benedisse. Poi Làbano partì e ritornò a casa sua.	1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.
2 Mentre Giacobbe continuava il suo cammino, gli si opposero gli angeli di Dio.	2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,
3 Giacobbe, al vederli, esclamò: "Questo è l'accampamento di Dio!" e chiamò quel luogo Macanaim.	3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.
4 Poi Giacobbe mandò dinanzi a sé alcuni messaggeri al fratello Esaù, verso il paese di Seir, la campagna di Edom.	4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,
5 Diede loro questo comando: "Così direte al mio signore Esaù: "Ho soggiornato come forestiero presso Làbano e mi ci sono fermato finora;	5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,
6 posseggo buoi, asini e greggi, e schiavi e schiave. Ho mandato a informare il mio signore, per trovar grazia ai suoi occhi".	6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '
7 I messaggeri tornarono da Giacobbe, e dissero: "Siamo stati da tuo fratello Esaù, e certamente egli marcia contro di te, avendo con sé quattrocento uomini".	7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'
8 Giacobbe si spaventò assai e fu nell'angustia; poi divise in due accampamenti la gente che era con lui, le greggi, gli armenti e i cammelli.	8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,
9 Pensò infatti: "Se Esaù viene contro una delle schiere e l'abbatte, il restante accampamento si salverà".	9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'
10 Poi Giacobbe disse: "O Dio di mio padre Abramo, Dio di mio padre Isacco, Signore che mi hai detto: "Ritorna al tuo paese e alla tua parentela e io ti farò del bene",	10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"
11 io sono indegno di tutta la benevolenza e di tutta la fedeltà che hai usato col servo tuo. Col mio solo bastone io ho passato questo fiume, ma ora sono divenuto due accampamenti.	11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.
12 Salvami, ti prego, dalla mano del mio fratello Esaù, perché io ho paura di lui e temo che venga e mi dia addosso non risparmiando né madri né figlioli.	12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.
13 Eppure tu hai detto: "Ti farò del bene e renderò la tua discendenza come la rena del mare, che non si può contare tanto è numerosa".	13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '
14 Giacobbe passò colà quella notte. Poi, di quello che gli capitava tra mano, prese di che fare un dono a suo fratello Esaù:	14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:
15 duecento capre e venti becchi, duecento pecore e venti montoni,	15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
16 trenta cammelle allattanti coi loro piccoli, quaranta giovenche e dieci torelli, venti asine e dieci asinelli.	16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.
17 Egli affidò ai suoi servi i singoli greggi separatamente e disse ai suoi servi: "Attraversate davanti a me e interponete un certo spazio fra gregge e gregge".	17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'
18 E ordinò al primo: "Quando t'incontrerà Esaù mio fratello e ti domanderà: "Di chi sei tu e dove vai? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"

20 Lo stesso ordine diede anche al secondo e al terzo e a tutti quelli che camminavano dietro le greggi, dicendo: "Queste parole voi rivolgerete a Esaù, quando lo troverete,	20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'
22 Così il dono partì prima di lui, mentre egli trascorse quella notte nell'accampamento.	22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.
23 Durante quella notte egli si alzò, prese le sue due mogli, le sue due serve, i suoi undici figlioli e attraversò il guado dello Iabbok.	23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
24 Li prese e fece loro attraversare il torrente e fece passare anche tutto il suo avere.	24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.
25 Giacobbe rimase solo, e un uomo lottò contro di lui fino allo spuntar dell'aurora.	25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak
26 Vedendo che non riusciva a vincerlo, lo percosse nel cavo del femore; e il cavo del femore di Giacobbe si lussò, mentr'egli si abbracciava con lui.	26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.
27 Quegli disse: "Lasciami andare, ché spunta l'aurora". Rispose: "Non ti lascerò partire se non mi avrai benedetto".	27 He said, 'Let me go, for day is breaking.' Jacob replied, 'I wil not let you go unless you bless me.'
28 Gli domandò: "Qual è il tuo nome?". Rispose: "Giacobbe".	28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.
29 Riprese: "Non più Giacobbe sarà il tuo nome, ma Israele, perché hai combattuto con Dio e con gli uomini e hai vinto".	29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'
30 Giacobbe allora gli chiese: "Dimmi il tuo nome, ti prego!". Gli rispose: "Perché chiedi il mio nome?". Ed ivi lo benedì.	30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.
31 Allora Giacobbe chiamò quel luogo Penuel, "perché -- disse -- ho visto Dio faccia a faccia eppure la mia vita è rimasta salva".	31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'
32 Il sole spuntò quando egli ebbe passato Penuel e Giacobbe zoppicava dell'anca.	32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.
33 Per questo i figli d'Israele, fino al giorno d'oggi, non mangiano il nervo sciatico, che si trova nel cavo del femore, perché quello aveva lussato il cavo del femore di Giacobbe sul nervo sciatico.	33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.
