| 1 - Prese allora a parlare Baldad il Suhita e disse: | 1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, |
| 2 «Fino a quando dirai tu tali cose, e vento impetuoso saranno i discorsi della tua bocca? | 2 How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind? |
| 3 Forse che Dio fa violenza al diritto, ovvero l'Onnipotente sconvolge la giustizia? | 3 Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice? |
| 4 Quantunque i tuoi figli abbian peccato contro di lui, ed egli li abbia dati in balìa del loro delitto, | 4 If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression; |
| 5 tuttavia se tu t'affretterai a ricorrere a Dio, e se volgerai preghiere all'Onnipotente, | 5 If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; |
| 6 qualora tu proceda con purità e rettitudine, e la speranza dell'ipocrita svanirà, e tranquilla renderà la tua dimora di giustizia; | 6 If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. |
| 7 tanto che se il tuo passato fu piccola cosa, il tuo avvenire s'accrescerà di molto. | 7 Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. |
| 8 Consulta infatti l'età primiera, e scruta diligentemente le memorie dei padri | 8 For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers: |
| 9 (noi invero siamo di ieri ed ignoranti, giacché come un'ombra sono i dì nostri sulla terra) | 9 (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) |
| 10 ed essi t'ammaestreranno, e parlandotidal loro cuore estrarranno i detti [seguenti]: | 10 Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart? |
| 11 Può forse verdeggiare la pianta del papiro senza l'umidità, ovvero può crescere la giuncaia senza l'acqua? | 11 Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water? |
| 12 Essa è ancora nel suo rigoglio, non pronta ad esser divelta, che prima d'ogni altra erba appassisce. | 12 Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. |
| 13 Tale è la sorte di quanti dimenticano Dio, e la speranza dell'ipocrita svanirà. | 13 So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: |
| 14 Non si compiacerà della sua stoltezza, e come tela di ragno sarà la sua fiducia: | 14 Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web. |
| 15 s'appoggerà egli sulla sua casa, ma non resisterà, la rafforzerà con sostegni, ma non starà su. | 15 He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. |
| 16 [Albero] rigoglioso egli appare nel cospetto del sole, e nel suo spuntare le sue fronde s'espandono, | 16 He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden. |
| 17 fra la maceria di pietre le sue radici s'intrecciano, e fra sassi egli dimora: | 17 His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones. |
| 18 ma se alcun lo recide via dal suo luogo, questo lo rinnega esclamando: - Non ti conosco! - | 18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. |
| 19 Questa infatti è la consolazione della sua sorte, che dal suolo altre [piante] germoglino. | 19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow. |
| 20 Dio non rigetta l'uomo onesto, nè stende la mano [in aiuto] agli empii. | 20 Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers: |
| 21 Egli ancora riempirà di sorriso la tua bocca, e le tue labbra di giubilo; | 21 Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing. |
| 22 quei che t'odiano saranno ricoperti di confusione, e la tenda degli empii non sussisterà.» | 22 They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought. |
