1 - Prese allora a parlare Elifaz il Temanita e disse:	1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke and said:
2 «Parla forse il sapiente quasi ragionando in aria, e riempiendo di [vento] infocato il suo petto?	2 Should a wise man answer with airy opinions, or puff himself up with wind?
3 Tu discuti a parole con chi non è pari a te, e proferisci ciò che non ti giova.	3 Should he argue in speech which does not avail, and in words which are to no profit?
4 Per conto tuo, tu abbandonasti il timor [di Dio], e togliesti via la devozione innanzi a Dio;	4 You in fact do away with piety, and you lessen devotion toward God,
5 la tua bocca infatti fu ammaestrata dall'iniquità, e tu hai imitato il linguaggio dei bestemmiatori:	5 Because your wickedness instructs your mouth, and you choose to speak like the crafty.
6 la tua bocca stessa ti condanna, e non io, e le tue labbra ti rispondono contro.	6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; you own lips refute you.
7 Forse sei tu nato primo fra gli uomini, e avanti ai colli fosti tu formato?	7 Are you indeed the first-born of mankind, or were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Sei forse stato a udire il consiglio di Dio? e inferiore a te sarà la sua sapienza?	8 Are you privy to the counsels of God, and do you restrict wisdom to yourself?
9 Che cosa sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? che cosa intendi, che noi non conosciamo?	9 What do you know that we do not know? What intelligence have you which we have not?
10 Anche i vecchi, anche i seniori sono fra noialtri, e molto più anziani essi sono dei tuoi antenati.	10 There are gray-haired old men among us more advanced in years than your father.
11 Sarebbe forse cosa straordinaria che Dio ti consolasse? ma le tue cattive parole impediscono ciò.	11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, and speech that deals gently with you?
12 Perchè mai la tua mente ti fa insuperbire, ed hai gli occhi stravolti come uno che sta in grandi pensieri?	12 Why do your notions carry you away, and why do your eyes blink,
13 Perchè si rigonfia contro Dio il tuo spirito, sì da pronunciar con la tua bocca tali discorsi?	13 So that you turn your anger against God and let such words escape your mouth!
14 Che cos'è l'uomo perchè sia senza macchia, e perchè appaia giusto chi è nato da donna?	14 What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman that he should be righteous?
15 Ecco, fra i santi di Lui nessuno è immutabile, e i cieli non sono puri agli occhi suoi:	15 If in his holy ones God places no confidence, and if the heavens are not clean in his sight,
16 quanto più l'abominevole e l'inutile,- l'uomo - che beve com'acqua l'iniquità!	16 How much less so is the abominable, the corrupt: man, who drinks in iniquity like water!
17 Ti spiegherò, tu ascoltami, ciò che ho visto ti racconterò;	17 I will show you, if you listen to me; what I have seen I will tell--
18 [ti comunicherò ciò che] i sapienti annunziano, non celando [gl'insegnamenti dei] loro padri:	18 What wise men relate and have not contradicted since the days of their fathers,
19 a cui soli fu data la regione, nè lo straniero era penetrato in mezzo a loro.	19 To whom alone the land was given, when no foreigner moved among them.
20 In tutti i suoi giorni l'empio è in angoscia, ed è incerto il numero d'anni della sua tirannia;	20 The wicked man is in torment all his days, and limited years are in store for the tyrant;
21 grido di spavento è sempre nelle sue orecchie, e mentre è pace, egli sempre sospetta insidie:	21 The sound of terrors is in his ears; when all is prosperous, the spoiler comes upon him.
22 non ha fiducia di potersi ritrarre dalle tenebre alla luce, vede ovunque attorno a sè delle spade.	22 He despairs of escaping the darkness, and looks ever for the sword;
23 Quand'ei si muove a ricercare il pane, sa ch'è pronto a suo fianco il dì della tenebra;	23 A wanderer, food for the vultures, he knows that his destruction is imminent.
24 la sventura, lo sbigottisce, l'affanno lo circondacome re che si prepara alla battaglia.	24 By day the darkness fills him with dread; distress and anguish overpower him.
25 Egli infatti stese contro Dio il suo pugno, e contro l'Onnipotente fece mostra di forza:	25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bade defiance to the Almighty,
26 corse contro di lui a collo eretto, e s'armò rafforzando la sua cervice;	26 One shall rush sternly upon him with the stout bosses of his shield, like a king prepared for the charge.
27 ricoprì il suo volto di adipe, e dai suoi fianchi pende la pinguedine;	27 Because he has blinded himself with his crassness, padding his loins with fat,
28 abitò in città diroccateche furon destinate a macerie.	28 He shall dwell in ruinous cities, in houses that are deserted, That are crumbling into clay
29 Egli non sarà ricco, nè si manterrà la sua fortuna, non metterà radici nella regione.	29 with no shadow to lengthen over the ground. He shall not be rich, and his possessions shall not endure;
30 Non si dipartirà dalla tenebra: una vampa disseccherà i suoi rami, sarà rapito dal vento il suo fiore;	30 A flame shall wither him up in his early growth, and with the wind his blossoms shall disappear.
31 nè avrà fiducia - ingannato vanamente da errore -che qualche prezzo valga a redimerlo.	31 for vain shall be his bartering.
32 Prima che i suoi dì si compiano, ei perirà, e i suoi rami si seccheranno:	32 His stalk shall wither before its time, and his branches shall be green no more.
33 sarà mozzato qual di vigna fiorente il suo grappolo, e qual d'olivo che getta via il suo fiore.	33 He shall be like a vine that sheds its grapes unripened, and like an olive tree casting off its bloom.
34 Poichè la setta degli empii sarà sterile, e un fuoco divorerà le dimore della gente venale:	34 For the breed of the impious shall be sterile, and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners.
35 concepisce dolore e partorisce iniquità, e il ventre loro prepara gl'inganni!»	35 They conceive malice and bring forth emptiness; they give birth to failure.
