CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINSAGRADA BIBLIA
When Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, had heard these things, specifically, that Joshua had seized Ai, and had overthrown it, (for just as he had done to Jericho and its king, so did he do to Ai and its king,) and that the Gibeonites had fled over to Israel, and were now their confederates,1 Sabendo Adonisedec, rei de Jerusalém, que Josué se tinha apoderado de Hai e a havia votado ao interdito, que fizera a Hai e ao seu rei como tinha feito a Jericó e a seu rei, e que os gabaonitas tinham feito paz com Israel e habitavam com ele,
he was very afraid. For Gibeon was a great city, and was one of the royal cities, and was greater than the town of Ai, and all its warriors were very strong.2 teve grande medo. Gabaon era, com efeito, uma grande cidade, uma cidade real, maior que Hai, e toda a sua população muito guerreira.
Therefore, Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, the king of Hebron, and to Piram, the king of Jarmuth, and also to Japhia, the king of Lachish, and to Debir, the king of Eglon, saying:3 Adonisedec, rei de Jerusalém, mandou dizer a Oão, rei de Hebron, a Farão, rei de Jerimot, a Jafia, rei de Laquis, e a Dabir, rei de Eglon:
“Ascend to me, and bring troops, so that we may fight against Gibeon. For it has fled over to Joshua and the sons of Israel.”4 Vinde comigo e ajudai-me a ferir Gabaon, porque fez paz com Josué e os israelitas.
And so, having assembled, the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, together with their armies, went up and encamped around Gibeon, laying siege to it.5 Unidos assim os cinco reis dos amorreus, o rei de Jerusalém, o rei de Hebron, o rei de Jerimot, o rei de Laquis e o rei de Eglon, saíram com todos os seus exércitos e acamparam diante de Gabaon, sitiando-a.
But the inhabitants of the city of Gibeon, when it was besieged, sent to Joshua, who was then staying in the camp at Gilgal. And they said to him: “May you not draw back your hands from helping your servants. Come quickly, and free us, and bring troops. For all the kings of the Amorites, who live in the mountains, have gathered together against us.”6 Os habitantes de Gabaon enviaram então a seguinte mensagem a Josué, que estava acampado em Gálgala: Não abandones os teus servos; vem ao nosso encontro sem demora, traze-nos socorro e livra-nos, porque todos os reis dos amorreus da montanha se coligaram contra nós.
And Joshua ascended from Gilgal, and the entire army of warriors with him, very strong men.7 Josué subiu de Gálgala com todos os seus guerreiros e todos os seus valentes.
And the Lord said to Joshua: “You should not fear them. For I have delivered them into your hands. None of them will be able to withstand you.”8 O Senhor disse-lhe: Não os temas, porque os entreguei em tuas mãos; nenhum deles te poderá resistir.
And so Joshua, ascending from Gilgal throughout the night, rushed upon them suddenly.9 Josué, tendo passado toda a noite a subir de Gálgala, caiu de repente sobre eles.
And the Lord set them in disarray before the face of Israel. And he crushed them in a great defeat at Gibeon, and he pursued them along the way of the ascent to Beth-horon, and he struck them down, even as far as Azekah and Makkedah.10 O Senhor semeou no meio deles o terror diante de Israel, e este infligiu-lhes uma terrível derrota diante de Gabaon, e perseguiu-os pelo caminho que sobe a Betoron, batendo-os até Azeca e Maceda.
And while they were fleeing from the sons of Israel, and were on the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord cast great stones from heaven upon them, as far as Azekah. And many more were killed by the hailstones, than were struck down by the swords of the sons of Israel.11 Enquanto fugiam diante de Israel, na descida de Betoron, o Senhor mandou sobre eles do céu uma tempestade de granizo até Azeca; e foram mais numerosos os que morreram sob essa chuva de pedras do que os que pereceram pela espada dos israelitas.
Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, on the day that he handed over the Amorite in the sight of the sons of Israel, and he said before them: “O sun, you shall not move toward Gibeon! O moon, you shall not move toward the valley of Aijalon!”12 Josué falou ao Senhor no dia em que ele entregou os amorreus nas mãos dos filhos de Israel, e disse em presença dos israelitas: Sol, detém-te sobre Gabaon, e tu, ó lua, sobre o vale de Ajalon.
And the sun and the moon stood still, until the people had avenged themselves of their enemies. Has this not been written in the book of the just? And so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and it did not hurry to its rest for the space of one day.13 E o sol parou, e a lua não se moveu até que o povo se vingou de seus inimigos. Isto acha-se escrito no Livro do Justo. O sol parou no meio do céu, e não se apressou a pôr-se pelo espaço de quase um dia inteiro.
Never before and never after was there so long a day, as when the Lord obeyed the voice of a man, and fought for Israel.14 Não houve, nem antes nem depois, um dia como aquele, em que o Senhor tenha obedecido à voz de um homem, porque o Senhor combatia por Israel.
And Joshua returned, with all of Israel, into the camp of Gilgal.15 Depois disso, Josué com toda a sua tropa voltou para o acampamento de Gálgala.
For the five kings had fled, and had hidden themselves in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.16 Ora, os cinco reis tinham fugido, e tinham se escondido numa caverna, em Maceda.
And it was reported to Joshua that the five kings had been found hidden in a cave, near the city of Makkedah.17 E noticiaram-no a Josué: Foram encontrados os cinco reis escondidos numa caverna, em Maceda.
And he instructed his companions and said: “Roll vast stones to the mouth of the cave, and station attentive men who will keep them closed.18 Josué respondeu: Rolai grandes pedras para a entrada da caverna, e ponde homens junto a ela em guarda.
But as for you, do not stay here; instead, pursue the enemies, and cut down the lattermost of those who are fleeing. You shall not permit those whom the Lord God has delivered into your hands to enter into the protection of their cities.”19 Vós, porém, não vos detenhais, mas persegui vossos inimigos; não os deixeis entrar em suas cidades, porque o Senhor, vosso Deus, os entregou em vossas mãos.
Thus, the adversaries were struck down in a great defeat, and having been nearly consumed, even to utter annihilation, those who were able to escape from Israel entered into fortified cities.20 Tendo Josué e os israelitas acabado de massacrá-los, até o extermínio - apenas uns poucos puderam escapar e recolher-se às suas cidades fortes -,
And the entire army returned to Joshua at Makkedah, where they were then encamped, in good health and in their full numbers. And no one dared to move his tongue against the sons of Israel.21 todo o povo voltou tranqüilamente ao acampamento, junto de Josué, em Maceda, e ninguém se atreveu a abrir a boca contra os filhos de Israel.
And Joshua instructed, saying, “Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forward to me the five kings, who are hidden within it.”22 Josué disse então: Abri a entrada da caverna, e trazei-me os cinco reis que lá estão. Assim o fizeram.
And the ministers did just as they had been ordered. And they led out to him the five kings from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.23 Foram tirados da caverna os cinco reis, o rei de Jerusalém, o rei de Hebron, o rei de Jerimot, o rei de Laquis e o rei de Eglon.
And when they had been led out to him, he called all the men of Israel, and he said to the leaders of the army who were with him, “Go, and place your feet upon the necks of these kings.” And when they had gone and had tread their feet upon the necks of those who were thrown down,24 Quando foram conduzidos a Josué, ele chamou todos os homens de Israel e disse aos chefes dos guerreiros que o tinham acompanhado: Aproximai-vos e ponde o pé sobre o pescoço destes reis. Tendo-se eles aproximado e posto o pé sobre o pescoço deles,
he spoke to them again: “Do not be afraid, and do not dread. Be strengthened and be steadfast. For so will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom you fight.”25 disse-lhes de novo: Não temais, nem tremais. Tende coragem e sede fortes, porque é assim que fará o Senhor a todos os inimigos que haveis de combater.
And Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he suspended them on five gallows. And they hung there until evening.26 Dizendo isso, Josué feriu-os de morte e suspendeu-os em cinco árvores, onde estiveram até a tarde.
And when the sun had set, he instructed his assistants that they should take them down from the gallows. And having been taken down, they cast them into the cave, where they had lain hidden, and they set vast stones at its mouth, which remain, even to the present.27 Ao pôr-do-sol, mandou que fossem descidos das árvores e lançados na caverna onde se tinham refugiado, e puseram à entrada grandes pedras, que ali se encontram ainda hoje.
Also on the same day, Joshua seized Makkedah, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and he put to death its king and all its inhabitants. He did not leave in it even the smallest remains.
Then he went on, with all of Israel, from Makkedah to Libnah, and he fought against it.29 Passou em seguida com todo o Israel a Libna, e atacaram-na.
And the Lord delivered it, with its king, into the hands of Israel. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, and all its inhabitants. They did not leave in it any remains. And they did to the king of Libnah, just as they had done to the king of Jericho.30 O Senhor entregou-a com seu rei nas mãos de Israel, que passou ao fio da espada a cidade com todo ser vivo que nela havia, não deixando escapar nenhum. E fez ao seu rei como tinha feito ao rei de Jericó.
From Libnah, with all of Israel, he went on to Lachish. And taking positions around it with his army, he besieged it.31 De Libna passou Josué com todo o Israel a Laquis, onde levantou o seu acampamento, sitiando-a.
And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and he seized it on the following day, and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every soul that was in it, just as he had done to Libnah.32 O Senhor lha entregou, e Israel apoderou-se dela no segundo dia, passando-a ao fio da espada com todo ser vivo, como tinha feito a Libna.
At that time, Horam, the king of Gezer, went up so that he might assist Lachish. And Joshua struck him with all his people, even unto utter annihilation.33 Então, Horão, rei de Gaser, veio em socorro de Laquis, mas Josué o derrotou com todo o seu povo até o extermínio completo.
And he went on from Lachish to Eglon, and he surrounded it.34 De Laquis, passou Josué com todo o seu povo a Eglon; levantaram ali o seu acampamento, e atacaram-na.
And he also defeated it on the same day. And he struck all the souls that were in it with the edge of the sword, in accord with all that he had done to Lachish.35 Tomaram-na no mesmo dia, e passaram-na ao fio da espada, votando ao interdito todo ser vivo, como tinha feito a Laquis.
He also ascended, with all of Israel, from Eglon into Hebron, and he fought against it.36 Subiu em seguida com todo o Israel de Eglon a Hebron, e atacaram-na.
He seized it and struck it with the edge of the sword, likewise with its king, and all the towns of that region, and all the souls that were staying in it. He did not leave any remains in it. Just as he had done to Eglon, so also did he do to Hebron, consuming with the sword all that he found within it.37 Tomaram Hebron e passaram ao fio da espada a cidade com seu rei, seus arrabaldes e todo ser vivo, sem nada deixar escapar, como tinham feito a Eglon. A cidade foi votada ao interdito com todo ser vivo.
Returning from there to Debir,38 Dali Josué, com todo o Israel, voltou-se contra Dabir e atacou-a;
he seized it and laid waste to it, likewise with its king. And all the surrounding towns, he struck with the edge of the sword. He did not leave in it any remains. Just as he had done to Hebron and Libnah, and to their kings, so did he do to Debir and to its king.39 apoderou-se dela, juntamente com seu rei, e passou-os ao fio da espada. Votou ao interdito toda alma viva que nela se achava, sem nada poupar, e fez a Dabir e ao seu rei como tinha feito a Hebron e a Libna com seus reis.
And so Joshua struck the entire land, the mountains, and the south, and the plains, and the descending slopes, with their kings. He did not leave in it any remains, but he put to death all that was able to breathe, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had instructed him,40 Josué feriu toda a terra: a montanha, o Negeb, a planície, as colinas com todos os seus reis, sem poupar ninguém, votando ao interdito tudo o que respirava, segundo a ordem do Senhor, Deus de Israel.
from Kadesh-barnea, as far as Gaza, with all the land of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.41 Tudo foi assim ferido por Josué, de Cades-Barne a Gaza, toda a terra de Gosen até Gabaon.
And all their kings and their regions, he seized and destroyed with a single attack. For the Lord, the God of Israel, fought on his behalf.42 Josué apoderou-se, de uma só vez, desse país e de seus reis, porque o Senhor, Deus de Israel, combatia por ele.
And he returned, with all of Israel, to the place of the encampment at Gilgal.43 Depois voltou Josué com todo o Israel para o acampamento de Gálgala.
