1 Corinthians 14

1 Pursue charity. Be zealous for spiritual things, but only so that you may prophesy.	1 Procuren alcanzar ese amor, y aspiren también a los dones espirituales, sobre todo al de la profecía.
2 For whoever speaks in tongues, speaks not to men, but to God. For no one understands. Yet by the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.	2 Porque aquel que habla un lenguaje incomprensible no se dirige a los hombres sino a Dios, y nadie le entiende: dice en éxtasis cosas misteriosas.
3 But whoever prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.	3 En cambio, el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificarlos, exhortarlos y reconfortarlos.
4 Whoever speaks in tongues edifies himself. But whoever prophesies edifies the Church.	4 El que habla un lenguaje incomprensible se edifica a sí mismo, pero el que profetiza edifica a la comunidad.
5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but more so to prophesy. For he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless perhaps he interprets, so that the Church may receive edification.	5 Mi deseo es que todos ustedes tengan el don de lenguas, pero prefiero que profeticen, porque el que profetiza aventaja al que habla un lenguaje incomprensible. A no ser que este último también interprete ese lenguaje, para edificación de la comunidad.
6 But now, brothers, if I were to come to you speaking in tongues, how would it benefit you, unless instead I speak to you in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophecy, or in doctrine?	6 Supongamos, hermanos, que yo fuera a verlos y les hablara en esa forma, ¿de qué les serviría, si mi palabra no les aportara ni revelación, ni ciencia, ni profecía, ni enseñanza?
7 Even those things that are without a soul can make sounds, whether it is a wind or a stringed instrument. But unless they present a distinction within the sounds, how will it be known which is from the pipe and which is from the string?	7 Sucedería lo mismo que con los instrumentos de música, por ejemplo, la flauta o la cítara. Si las notas no suenan distintamente, nadie reconoce lo que se está ejecutando.
8 For example, if the trumpet made an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for battle?	8 Y si la trompeta emite un sonido confuso, ¿quién se lanzará al combate?
9 So it is with you also, for unless you utter with the tongue in plain speech, how will it be known what is said? For then you would be speaking into the air.	9 Así les pasa a ustedes: si no hablan de manera inteligible, ¿cómo se comprenderá lo que dicen? Estarían hablando en vano.
10 Consider that there are so many different kinds of languages in this world, and yet none is without a voice.	10 No sé cuántos idiomas diversos hay en el mundo, y cada uno tienen sus propias palabras.
11 Therefore, if I do not understand the nature of the voice, then I shall be like a foreigner to the one with whom I am speaking; and he who is speaking will be like a foreigner to me.	11 Pero si ignoro el sentido de las palabras, seré como un extranjero para el que me habla y él lo será para mí.
12 So it is with you also. And since you are zealous for what is spiritual, seek the edification of the Church, so that you may abound.	12 Así, ya que ustedes ambicionan tanto los dones espirituales, procuren abundar en aquellos que sirven para edificación de la comunidad.
13 For this reason, too, whoever speaks in tongues, let him pray for the interpretation.	13 Por esta razón, el que habla un lenguaje incomprensible debe orar pidiendo el don de interpretarlo.
14 So, if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my mind is without fruit.	14 Porque si oro en un lenguaje incomprensible, mi espíritu ora, pero mi inteligencia no saca ningún provecho.
15 What is next? I should pray with the spirit, and also pray with the mind. I should sing psalms with the spirit, and also recite psalms with the mind.	15 ¿Qué debo hacer entonces? Orar con el espíritu y también con la inteligencia, cantar himnos con el espíritu y también con la inteligencia.
16 Otherwise, if you have blessed only with the spirit, how can someone, in a state of ignorance, add an “Amen” to your blessing? For he does not know what you are saying.	16 Si bendices a Dios solamente con el espíritu, ¿cómo podrá el no iniciado decir «Amén» a tu acción de gracias, ya que no entienden lo que estás diciendo?
17 In this case, certainly, you give thanks well, but the other person is not edified.	17 Sin duda, tu acción de gracias es excelente, pero eso no sirve de edificación para el otro.
18 I thank my God that I speak in tongues for all of you.	18 Yo doy gracias a Dios porque tengo el don de lenguas más que todos ustedes.
19 But in the Church, I prefer to speak five words from my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in tongues.	19 Sin embargo, cuando estoy en la asamblea prefiero decir cinco palabras inteligibles, para instruir a los demás, que diez mil en un lenguaje incomprensible.
20 Brothers, do not choose to have the minds of children. Instead, be free of malice like infants, but be mature in your minds.	20 Hermanos, no sean como niños para juzgar; séanlo para la malicia, pero juzguen como personas maduras.
21 It is written in the law: “I will speak to this people with other tongues and other lips, and even so, they will not heed me, says the Lord.”	21 En la Ley está escrito: Yo hablaré a este pueblo en lenguas extrañas y por boca de extranjeros; con todo, ni aun así me escucharán, dice el Señor.
22 And so, tongues are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers; and prophecies are not for unbelievers, but for believers.	22 Esto quiere decir que el don de lenguas es un signo, no para los que creen, sino para los que se niegan a creer; la profecía, en cambio, es para los que tienen fe.
23 If then, the entire Church were to gather together as one, and if all were to speak in tongues, and then ignorant or unbelieving persons were to enter, would they not say that you were insane?	23 Por otra parte, si al reunirse la asamblea, todos se ponen a hablar en un lenguaje incomprensible y entran algunos que no están iniciados o no son creyentes, seguramente pensarán que ustedes están locos.
24 But if everyone prophesies, and one who is ignorant or unbelieving enters, he may be convinced by it all, because he understands it all.	24 En cambio, si todos profetizan y entra alguno de esos hombres, todos podrán convencerlo y examinarlo.
25 The secrets of his heart are then made manifest. And so, falling to his face, he would adore God, proclaiming that God is truly among you.	25 Así quedarán manifiestos los secretos de su corazón, y él, cayendo de rodillas, adorará a Dios y proclamará que Dios está realmente entre ustedes.
26 What is next, brothers? When you gather together, each one of you may have a psalm, or a doctrine, or a revelation, or a language, or an interpretation, but let everything be done for edification.	26 Hermanos, ¿qué conclusión sacaremos de todo esto? Cuando se reúnen, uno puede cantar salmos, otro enseñar, o transmitir una revelación, o pronunciar un discurso en un lenguaje incomprensible, o dar la interpretación del mismo. Que todo sirva para la edificación común.
27 If anyone is speaking in tongues, let there be only two, or at most three, and then in turn, and let someone interpret.	27 ¿Se tiene el don de lenguas? Que hablen dos, o a lo sumo tres, y por turno, y que alguien interprete.
28 But if there is no one to interpret, he should remain silent in the church, then he may speak when he is alone with God.	28 Si no hay intérprete, que se callen y que cada uno hable consigo mismo y con Dios.
29 And let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.	29 Con respecto a los profetas, que hablen dos o tres y que los demás juzguen lo que ellos dicen.
30 But then, if something is revealed to another who is sitting, let the first one become silent.	30 Si algún otro asistente recibe una revelación, que se calle el que está hablando.
31 For you are all able to prophesy one at a time, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged.	31 Así todos tendrán oportunidad de profetizar, uno por uno, para que todos sean instruidos y animados.
32 For the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.	32 Los que tienen el don de profecía deben ser capaces de controlar su inspiración,
33 And God is not of dissension, but of peace, just as I also teach in all the churches of the saints.	33 porque Dios quiere la paz y no el desorden. Como en todas las Iglesias de los santos,
34 Women should be silent in the churches. For it is not permitted for them to speak; but instead, they should be subordinate, as the law also says.	34 que las mujeres permanezcan calladas durante las asambleas: a ellas no les está permitido hablar. Que se sometan, como lo manda la Ley.
35 And if they want to learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church.	35 Si necesitan alguna aclaración, que le pregunten al marido en su casa, porque no está bien que la mujer hable en las asambleas.
36 So now, did the Word of God proceed from you? Or was it sent to you alone?	36 ¿Acaso la Palabra de Dios ha salido de ustedes o ustedes son los únicos que la han recibido?
37 If anyone seems to be a prophet or a spiritual person, he should understand these things which I am writing to you, that these things are the commandments of the Lord.	37 Si alguien se tiene por profeta o se cree inspirado por el Espíritu, reconozca en esto que les escribo un mandato del Señor,
38 If anyone does not recognize these things, he should not be recognized.	38 y si alguien no lo reconoce como tal, es porque Dios no lo ha reconocido a él.
39 And so, brothers, be zealous to prophesy, and do not prohibit speaking in tongues.	39 En conclusión, hermanos, aspiren al don de la profecía y no impidan que se hable en un lenguaje incomprensible.
40 But let everything be done respectfully and according to proper order.	40 Pero todo debe hacerse con decoro y ordenadamente.
