CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINGREEK BIBLE
And so, when Festus had arrived in the province, after three days, he ascended to Jerusalem from Caesarea.1 Ο Φηστος λοιπον, αφου ηλθεν εις την επαρχιαν, μετα τρεις ημερας ανεβη εις Ιεροσολυμα απο της Καισαρειας.
And the leaders of the priests, and those first among the Jews, went to him against Paul. And they were petitioning him,2 Ενεφανισθησαν δε εις αυτον ο αρχιερευς και οι πρωτοι των Ιουδαιων κατα του Παυλου και παρεκαλουν αυτον,
asking for favor against him, so that he would order him to be led to Jerusalem, where they were maintaining an ambush in order to kill him along the way.3 ζητουντες χαριν κατ' αυτου, να μεταφερη αυτον εις Ιερουσαλημ, ενεδρευοντες να φονευσωσιν αυτον καθ' οδον.
But Festus responded that Paul was to be kept in Caesarea, and that he himself would soon go there.4 Ο δε Φηστος απεκριθη οτι ο Παυλος φυλαττεται εν Καισαρεια, και οτι αυτος ταχεως μελλει να αναχωρηση εκεισε.
“Therefore,” he said, “let those among you who are able, descend at the same time, and if there is any guilt in the man, they may accuse him.”5 Οθεν οι δυνατοι μεταξυ σας, ειπεν, ας καταβωσι μετ' εμου, και εαν υπαρχη τι εν τω ανθρωπω τουτω, ας κατηγορησωσιν αυτον.
Then, having stayed among them no more than eight or ten days, he descended to Caesarea. And on the next day, he sat in the judgment seat, and he ordered Paul to be led in.6 Και αφου διετριψε μεταξυ αυτων υπερ τας δεκα ημερας, κατεβη εις Καισαρειαν, και τη επαυριον καθησας επι του βηματος, προσεταξε να φερθη ο Παυλος.
And when he had been brought, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, throwing out many serious accusations, none of which they were able to prove.7 Και αφου ηλθε, παρεσταθησαν οι καταβαντες απο Ιεροσολυμων Ιουδαιοι, επιφεροντες κατα του Παυλου πολλας και βαρειας κατηγοριας, τας οποιας δεν ηδυναντο να αποδειξωσιν?
Paul offered this defense: “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I offended in any matter.”8 απολογουμενου εκεινου οτι ουτε εις τον νομον των Ιουδαιων ουτε εις το ιερον ουτε εις τον Καισαρα επραξα τι αμαρτημα.
But Festus, wanting to show greater favor to the Jews, responded to Paul by saying: “Are you willing to ascend to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things before me?”9 Ο δε Φηστος, θελων να καμη χαριν εις τους Ιουδαιους, αποκριθεις προς τον Παυλον ειπε? Θελεις να αναβης εις Ιεροσολυμα και εκει να κριθης περι τουτων ενωπιον μου;
But Paul said: “I stand in Caesar’s tribunal, which is where I ought to be judged. I have done no harm to the Jews, as you well know.10 Και ο Παυλος ειπεν? Επι του βηματος του Καισαρος παρισταμαι, οπου πρεπει να κριθω. Δεν ηδικησα κατ' ουδεν τους Ιουδαιους, καθως και συ γνωριζεις καλλιστα?
For if I have harmed them, or if I have done anything deserving of death, I do not object to dying. But if there is nothing to these things about which they accuse me, no one is able to deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar.”11 διοτι εαν αδικω και επραξα τι αξιον θανατου, δεν φευγω τον θανατον?
Then Festus, having spoken with the council, responded: “You have appealed to Caesar, to Caesar you shall go.”12 Τοτε ο Φηστος, συνομιλησας μετα του συμβουλιου, απεκριθη?
And when some days had passed, king Agrippa and Bernice descended to Caesarea, to greet Festus.13 Και αφου παρηλθον ημεραι τινες, Αγριππας ο βασιλευς και η Βερνικη ηλθον εις Καισαρειαν δια να χαιρετησωσι τον Φηστον.
And since they remained there for many days, Festus spoke to the king about Paul, saying: “A certain man was left behind as a prisoner by Felix.14 Ενω δε διετριβον εκει ημερας πολλας, ο Φηστος ανεφερε προς τον βασιλεα τα περι του Παυλου, λεγων? Ειναι τις ανθρωπος αφημενος εδω δεσμιος υπο του Φηλικος,
When I was at Jerusalem, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the Jews came to me about him, asking for condemnation against him.15 περι του οποιου, οτε υπηγα εις Ιεροσολυμα, οι αρχιερεις και οι πρεσβυτεροι των Ιουδαιων ενεφανισθησαν εις εμε, ζητουντες καταδικην εναντιον αυτου?
I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to condemn any man, before he who is being accused has been confronted by his accusers and has received the opportunity to defend himself, so as to clear himself of the charges.16 προς τους οποιους απεκριθην οτι δεν ειναι συνηθεια εις τους Ρωμαιους να παραδιδωσι κατα χαριν ουδενα ανθρωπον εις θανατον, πριν ο κατηγορουμενος εχη τους κατηγορους κατα προσωπον και λαβη καιρον απολογιας περι του εγκληματος.
Therefore, when they had arrived here, without any delay, on the following day, sitting in the judgment seat, I ordered the man to be brought.17 Αφου λοιπον αυτοι συνηλθον εδω, χωρις να καμω μηδεμιαν αναβολην την ακολουθον ημεραν καθησας επι του βηματος, προσεταξα να φερθη ο ανθρωπος?
But when the accusers had stood up, they did not present any accusation about him from which I would suspect evil.18 περι του οποιου οι κατηγοροι παρασταθεντες δεν επεφεραν ουδεμιαν κατηγοριαν εξ οσων εγω υπενοουν,
Instead, they brought against him certain disputes about their own superstition and about a certain Jesus, who had died, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.19 αλλ' ειχον κατ' αυτου ζητηματα τινα περι της ιδιας αυτων δεισιδαιμονιας και περι τινος Ιησου αποθανοντος, τον οποιον ο Παυλος ελεγεν οτι ζη.
Therefore, being in doubt about this kind of question, I asked him if he was willing go to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things.20 Απορων δε εγω εις την περι τουτου ζητησιν, ελεγον αν θελη να υπαγη εις Ιερουσαλημ και εκει να κριθη περι τουτων.
But since Paul was appealing to be kept for a decision before Augustus, I ordered him to be kept, until I might send him to Caesar.”21 Αλλ' επειδη ο Παυλος επεκαλεσθη να φυλαχθη εις την κρισιν του Σεβαστου, προσεταξα να φυλαττηται, εωσου πεμψω αυτον προς τον Καισαρα.
Then Agrippa said to Festus: “I myself also want to hear the man.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you shall hear him.”22 Ο δε Αγριππας ειπε προς τον Φηστον?
And on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had arrived with great ostentation and had entered into the auditorium with the tribunes and the principal men of the city, Paul was brought in, at the order of Festus.23 Την επαυριον λοιπον, οτε ηλθεν ο Αγριππας και η Βερνικη μετα μεγαλης πομπης και εισηλθον εις το ακροατηριον μετα των χιλιαρχων και των εξοχων ανδρων της πολεως, προσεταξεν ο Φηστος, και εφερθη ο Παυλος.
And Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all who are present together with us, you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews disturbed me at Jerusalem, petitioning and clamoring that he should not be allowed to live any longer.24 Τοτε λεγει ο Φηστος? Αγριππα βασιλευ και παντες οι συμπαρευρισκομενοι μεθ' ημων, θεωρειτε τουτον, περι του οποιου ολον το πληθος των Ιουδαιων με ωμιλησαν και εν Ιεροσολυμοις και εδω, καταβοωντες οτι αυτος δεν πρεπει πλεον να ζη.
Truly, I have discovered nothing brought forth against him that is worthy of death. But since he himself has appealed to Augustus, it was my judgment to send him.25 Εγω δε επειδη ευρον οτι δεν επραξεν ουδεν αξιον θανατου, και αυτος ουτος επεκαλεσθη τον Σεβαστον, απεφασισα να πεμψω αυτον.
But I have not determined what to write to the emperor about him. Because of this, I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, O king Agrippa, so that, once an inquiry has occurred, I may have something to write.26 Περι του οποιου δεν εχω ουδεν βεβαιον να γραψω προς τον κυριον μου?
For it seems to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not to indicate the accusations set against him.”27 Διοτι μοι φαινεται αλογον, πεμπων δεσμιον, να μη φανερωσω και τα κατ' αυτου εγκληματα.
