And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John,1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
(though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but only his disciples)2 (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples),
he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee.3 he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
Now he needed to cross through Samaria.4 He had to pass through Samaria.
Therefore, he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
And Jacob’s well was there. And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, was sitting in a certain way on the well. It was about the sixth hour.6 Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.
A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.”7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food.8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus responded and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ perhaps you would have made a request of him, and he would have given you living water.”10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
The woman said to him: “Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water, and the well is deep. From where, then, do you have living water?11 (The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water?
Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and who drank from it, with his sons and his cattle?”12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?"
Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;
Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not thirst and may not come here to draw water.”15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and return here.”16 Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back."
The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’17 The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.'
For you have had five husbands, but he whom you have now is not your husband. You have spoken this in truth.”18 For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."
The woman said to him: “Lord, I see that you are a Prophet.19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.
Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."
Jesus said to her: “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem.21 Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know. For salvation is from the Jews.22 You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and it is now, when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him.23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.
God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."
The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.”25 The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything."
Jesus said to her: “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.”26 Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you."
And then his disciples arrived. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman. Yet no one said: “What are you seeking?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”27 At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there:28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people,
“Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?”29 "Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?"
Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him.30 They went out of the town and came to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat."
But he said to them, “I have food to eat which you do not know.”32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."
Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”33 So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"
Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of the One who sent me, so that I may perfect his work.34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside; for it is already ripe for the harvest.35 Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.
For he who reaps, receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.36 The reaper is already receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
For in this the word is true: that it is one who sows, and it is another who reaps.37 For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.'
I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work."
Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.”39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done."
Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days.40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.
And many more believed in him, because of his own word.41 Many more began to believe in him because of his word,
And they said to the woman: “Now we believe, not because of your speech, but because we ourselves have heard him, and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”42 and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."
Then, after two days, he departed from there, and he traveled into Galilee.43 After the two days, he left there for Galilee.
For Jesus himself offered testimony that a Prophet has no honor in his own country.44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place.
And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast. For they also went to the feast day.45 When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.
Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, where he made water into wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum.46 Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum.
Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, he sent to him and begged him to come down and heal his son. For he was beginning to die.47 When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death.
Therefore, Jesus said to him, “Unless you have seen signs and wonders, you do not believe.”48 Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."
The ruler said to him, “Lord, come down before my son dies.”49 The royal official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
Jesus said to him, “Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and so he went away.50 Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.
Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive.51 While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live.
Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better. And they said to him, “Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”52 He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, "The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon."
Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And both he and his entire household believed.53 The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he and his whole household came to believe.
This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.54 (Now) this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.
