These are the words of the covenant which the Lord instructed Moses to form with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, beside that covenant which he struck with them at Horeb.1 Moses called all Israel together and said to them: 'You have seen everything that Yahweh did beforeyour eyes in Egypt, to Pharaoh, to his servants and to his whole country-
And Moses called all of Israel, and he said to them: “You have seen all the things that the Lord has done in your sight in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to his entire land:2 the great ordeals which you yourselves witnessed, those signs and the great wonders.
the great trials, which your eyes have seen, those immense signs and wonders.3 But until today Yahweh has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear.
But the Lord has not given you an understanding heart, and seeing eyes, and ears that are able to hear, even to this present day.4 'I have been leading you for forty years in the desert, yet the clothes which you have been wearinghave not worn out, nor have the sandals on your feet.
He led you for forty years through the desert. Your garments have not been worn out, nor have the shoes on your feet been consumed by age.5 You have had no bread to eat, you have had no wine or fermented liquor to drink, so that you wouldlearn that I, Yahweh, am your God.
You did not eat bread, nor did you drink wine or liquor, so that you would know that I am the Lord your God.6 'When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to do battleagainst us; we defeated them.
And you arrived at this place. And Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, went out to meet us in battle. And we struck them down.7 We conquered their country and gave it as heritage to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
And we took their land and delivered it as a possession to Ruben and to Gad, and to half of the tribe of Manasseh.8 'Keep the words of this covenant, put them into practice, and you wil thrive in everything you do.
Therefore, keep the words of this covenant, and fulfill them, so that you may understand all that you are doing.9 'Al of you are standing here today in the presence of Yahweh your God: your tribal leaders, yourelders, your scribes, al the men of Israel,
Today, you all stand in the sight of the Lord your God: your leaders, and tribes, and those greater by birth, and teachers, all the people of Israel,10 with your children and your wives (and the foreigner too who is in your camp, be he your wood-cutteror your water-carrier),
your children and wives, and the new arrival who dwells with you in the camp, aside from those who cut wood, and those who bring water,11 and you are about to pass into the covenant of Yahweh your God, sworn with imprecation, which hehas made with you today,
so that you may cross into the covenant of the Lord your God, and into the oath which the Lord your God strikes with you today.12 and by which, today, he makes you a nation for himself and he himself becomes a God to you, as hehas promised you, and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
So shall he raise you up as a people to himself, and so shall he be your God, just as he has spoken to you, and just as he swore to your fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.13 Not only on your behalf am I today making this covenant and pronouncing this solemn curse,
And I am not forming this covenant and confirm these oaths with you alone,14 not only on behalf of those standing here with us in the presence of Yahweh our God today, but alsoon behalf of those not here with us today.
but with all those who are present as well as those who are absent.15 'Yes, you know the people with whom we used to live in Egypt, and those through whose countrieswe have travel ed -- the nations through whom we have passed.
For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of nations. And when passing through them,16 You have seen their abominations and their idols made of wood and stone, silver and gold, whichwere there.
you saw their abominations and filth, that is, their idols of wood and of stone, of silver and of gold, which they worshipped,17 'Let there be no man or woman of you, no clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from Yahweh yourGod today, to go and serve the gods of these nations. Among you let there be no root which bears poison orwormwood.
so that there would not be among you man or woman, family or tribe, whose heart has been turned away this day from the Lord our God, so as to go and serve the gods of those nations. For then there would be among you a root springing forth gall and bitterness.18 If, after hearing this imprecation, anyone, blessing himself, should say in his heart, "I shall do wellenough if I fol ow the dictates of my heart; much water drives away thirst,"
And if he were to hear the words of this oath, he would bless himself in his own heart saying: ‘There will be peace for me, and I will walk in the depravity of my heart.’ And so, the one who is inebriated would consume the one who is thirsty.19 Yahweh wil not pardon him. The wrath and jealousy of Yahweh wil blaze against such a person;every curse written in this book wil fal on him, and Yahweh will blot his name out under heaven.
But the Lord would not ignore him. Instead, at that time, his fury and zealousness would be very greatly enflamed against that man, and all the curses which have been written in this volume would settle upon him. And the Lord would abolish his name from under heaven,20 Yahweh wil single him out of al the tribes of Israel for misfortune, in accordance with al the cursesof the covenant written in the book of this Law.
and consume him unto perdition out of all the tribes of Israel, according to the curses which are contained in the book of this law and in the covenant.21 'The future generation, that of your children coming after you, and the foreigner arriving from somefar-away land, on seeing the plagues and diseases inflicted on this country by Yahweh, wil exclaim,
And the subsequent generation would speak out, along with the sons who will be born afterward. And the sojourners, who will arrive from far away, will see the plagues of that land and the infirmities with which the Lord will have afflicted it,22 "Sulphur! Salt!-The whole country is burning! No one wil sow, nothing grow, no vegetation springever again! Devastation like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboi m, devastated by Yahweh in hisfurious wrath!"
having burned it with sulphur and molten salt, so that it can no longer be sown. And certainly no greenery would spring up, as in the example of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overturned with his wrath and fury.23 And al the nations wil exclaim, "Why has Yahweh treated this country like this? Why this great blazeof anger?"
And so, all the nations would say: ‘Why has the Lord acted this way toward this land? What is this immense wrath of his fury?’24 'And people wil say, "Because they deserted the covenant of Yahweh, God of their ancestors, thecovenant which he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt;
And they will respond: ‘Because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, which he formed with their fathers, when he led them away from the land of Egypt.25 because they went and served other gods and worshipped them, gods hitherto unknown to them, gods that were no part of their heritage from him:
And they have served foreign gods, and adored them, though they did not know them, and though they had not been allotted to them.26 this is why Yahweh's anger has blazed against this country, afflicting it with al the curses written inthis book.
For this reason, the fury of the Lord was enraged against this land, so as to lead over it all the curses which have been written in this volume.27 In anger, in fury, in fierce wrath, Yahweh has torn them from their own country and flung them intoanother country, where they are today."
And he has cast them out of their own land, with anger and fury, and with a very great indignation, and he has thrown them into a strange land, just as has been proven this day.’28 Things hidden belong to Yahweh our God, but things revealed are ours and our children's for ever,so that we can put al the words of this Law into practice.'
These hidden things of the Lord our God have been revealed to us and to our sons in perpetuity, so that we may accomplish all the words of this law.”
