Matthew 26

1 And it happened that, when Jesus had completed all these words, he said to his disciples,	1 Ye know that after two days the passover takes place, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.
2 “You know that after two days the Passover will begin, and the Son of man will be handed over to be crucified.”	2 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together to the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas,
3 Then the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.	3 and took counsel together in order that they might seize Jesus by subtlety and kill him;
4 And they took counsel so that by deceitfulness they might take hold of Jesus and kill him.	4 but they said, Not in the feast, that there be not a tumult among the people.
5 But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”	5 a woman, having an alabaster flask of very precious ointment, came to him and poured it out upon his head as he lay at table.
6 And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,	6 But the disciples seeing it became indignant, saying, To what end {was} this waste?
7 a woman drew near to him, holding an alabaster box of precious ointment, and she poured it over his head while he was reclining at table.	7 for this might have been sold for much and been given to the poor.
8 But the disciples, seeing this, were indignant, saying: “What is the purpose of this waste?	8 But Jesus knowing {it} said to them, Why do ye trouble the woman? for she has wrought a good work toward me.
9 For this could have been sold for a great deal, so as to be given to the poor.”	9 For ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always.
10 But Jesus, knowing this, said to them: “Why are you bothering this woman? For she has done a good deed to me.	10 For in pouring out this ointment on my body, she has done it for my burying.
11 For the poor you will always have with you. But you will not always have me.	11 Verily I say to you, Wheresoever these glad tidings may be preached in the whole world, that also which this {woman} has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
12 For in pouring this ointment on my body, she has prepared for my burial.	12 and said, What are ye willing to give me, and *I* will deliver him up to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.
13 Amen I say to you, wherever this Gospel will be preached in the whole world, what she has done also shall be told, in memory of her.”	13 And from that time he sought a good opportunity that he might deliver him up.
14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the leaders of the priests,	14 And he said, Go into the city unto such a one, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near, I will keep the passover in thy house with my disciples.
15 and he said to them, “What are you willing to give me, if I hand him over to you?” So they appointed thirty pieces of silver for him.	15 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover.
16 And from then on, he sought an opportunity to betray him.	16 And when the evening was come he lay down at table with the twelve.
17 Then, on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”	17 And as they were eating he said, Verily I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.
18 So Jesus said, “Go into the city, to a certain one, and say to him: ‘The Teacher said: My time is near. I am observing the Passover with you, along with my disciples.’ ”	18 And being exceedingly grieved they began to say to him, each of them, Is it *I*, Lord?
19 And the disciples did just as Jesus appointed to them. And they prepared the Passover.	19 But he answering said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, *he* it is who shall deliver me up.
20 Then, when evening arrived, he sat at table with his twelve disciples.	20 The Son of man goes indeed, according as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up; it were good for that man if he had not been born.
21 And while they were eating, he said: “Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.”	21 And Judas, who delivered him up, answering said, Is it *I*, Rabbi? He says to him, *Thou* hast said.
22 And being greatly saddened, each one of them began to say, “Surely, it is not I, Lord?”	22 And having taken {the} cup and given thanks, he gave {it} to them, saying, Drink ye all of it.
23 But he responded by saying: “He who dips his hand with me into the dish, the same will betray me.	23 For this is my blood, that of the {new} covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.
24 Indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written about him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”	24 But I say to you, that I will not at all drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.
25 Then Judas, who betrayed him, responded by saying, “Surely, it is not I, Master?” He said to him, “You have said it.”	25 Depois do canto dos Salmos, dirigiram-se eles para o monte das Oliveiras.
26 Now while they were eating the meal, Jesus took bread, and he blessed and broke and gave it to his disciples, and he said: “Take and eat. This is my body.”	26 Disse-lhes então Jesus: Esta noite serei para todos vós uma ocasião de queda; porque está escrito: Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersadas {Zc 13,7}.
27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks. And he gave it to them, saying: “Drink from this, all of you.	27 Mas, depois da minha Ressurreição, eu vos precederei na Galiléia.
28 For this is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many as a remission of sins.	28 Pedro interveio: Mesmo que sejas para todos uma ocasião de queda, para mim jamais o serás.
29 But I say to you, I will not drink again from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.”	29 Disse-lhe Jesus: Em verdade te digo: nesta noite mesma, antes que o galo cante, três vezes me negarás.
30 And after a hymn was sung, they went out to the Mount of Olives.	30 Respondeu-lhe Pedro: Mesmo que seja necessário morrer contigo, jamais te negarei! E todos os outros discípulos diziam-lhe o mesmo.
31 Then Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’	31 Retirou-se Jesus com eles para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e disse-lhes: Assentai-vos aqui, enquanto eu vou ali orar.
32 But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”	32 E, tomando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se.
33 Then Peter responded by saying to him, “Even if everyone else has fallen away from you, I will never fall away.”	33 Disse-lhes, então: Minha alma está triste até a morte. Ficai aqui e vigiai comigo.
34 Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that in this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”	34 Adiantou-se um pouco e, prostrando-se com a face por terra, assim rezou: Meu Pai, se é possível, afasta de mim este cálice! Todavia não se faça o que eu quero, mas sim o que tu queres.
35 Peter said to him, “Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke similarly.	35 Foi ter então com os discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. E disse a Pedro: Então não pudestes vigiar uma hora comigo...
36 Then Jesus went with them to a garden, which is called Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit down here, while I go there and pray.”	36 Vigiai e orai para que não entreis em tentação. O espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca.
37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and saddened.	37 Afastou-se pela segunda vez e orou, dizendo: Meu Pai, se não é possível que este cálice passe sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade!
38 Then he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”	38 Voltou ainda e os encontrou novamente dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados.
39 And continuing on a little further, he fell prostrate on his face, praying and saying: “My Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass away from me. Yet truly, let it not be as I will, but as you will.”	39 Deixou-os e foi orar pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.
40 And he approached his disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “So, were you not able to keep vigil with me for one hour?	40 Voltou então para os seus discípulos e disse-lhes: Dormi agora e repousai! Chegou a hora: o Filho do Homem vai ser entregue nas mãos dos pecadores...
41 Be vigilant and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. Indeed, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	41 Levantai-vos, vamos! Aquele que me trai está perto daqui.
42 Again, a second time, he went and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this chalice cannot pass away, unless I drink it, let your will be done.”	42 Jesus ainda falava, quando veio Judas, um dos Doze, e com ele uma multidão de gente armada de espadas e cacetes, enviada pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos do povo.
43 And again, he went and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.	43 O traidor combinara com eles este sinal: Aquele que eu beijar, é ele. Prendei-o!
44 And leaving them behind, again he went and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.	44 Aproximou-se imediatamente de Jesus e disse: Salve, Mestre. E beijou-o.
45 Then he approached his disciples and said to them: “Sleep now and rest. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.	45 Disse-lhe Jesus: É, então, para isso que vens aqui? Em seguida, adiantaram-se eles e lançaram mão em Jesus para prendê-lo.
46 Rise up; let us go. Behold, he who will betray me draws near.”	46 Mas um dos companheiros de Jesus desembainhou a espada e feriu um servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.
47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people.	47 Jesus, no entanto, lhe disse: Embainha tua espada, porque todos aqueles que usarem da espada, pela espada morrerão.
48 And he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: “Whomever I will kiss, it is he. Take hold of him.”	48 Crês tu que não posso invocar meu Pai e ele não me enviaria imediatamente mais de doze legiões de anjos?
49 And quickly drawing close to Jesus, he said, “Hail, Master.” And he kissed him.	49 Mas como se cumpririam então as Escrituras, segundo as quais é preciso que seja assim?
50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what purpose have you come?” Then they approached, and they put their hands on Jesus, and they held him.	50 Depois, voltando-se para a turba, falou: Saístes armados de espadas e porretes para prender-me, como se eu fosse um malfeitor. Entretanto, todos os dias estava eu sentado entre vós ensinando no templo e não me prendestes.
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus, extending his hand, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.	51 Mas tudo isto aconteceu porque era necessário que se cumprissem os oráculos dos profetas. Então os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
52 Then Jesus said to him: “Put your sword back in its place. For all who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.	52 Os que haviam prendido Jesus levaram-no à casa do sumo sacerdote Caifás, onde estavam reunidos os escribas e os anciãos do povo.
53 Or do you think that I cannot ask my Father, so that he would give me, even now, more than twelve legions of Angels?	53 Pedro seguia-o de longe, até o pátio do sumo sacerdote. Entrou e sentou-se junto aos criados para ver como terminaria aquilo.
54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must be so?”	54 Enquanto isso, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e todo o conselho procuravam um falso testemunho contra Jesus, a fim de o levarem à morte.
55 In that same hour, Jesus said to the crowds: “You went out, as if to a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me. Yet I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not take hold of me.	55 Mas não o conseguiram, embora se apresentassem muitas falsas testemunhas.
56 But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples fled, abandoning him.	56 Por fim, apresentaram-se duas testemunhas, que disseram: Este homem disse: Posso destruir o templo de Deus e reedificá-lo em três dias.
57 But those who were holding Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had joined together.	57 Levantou-se o sumo sacerdote e lhe perguntou: Nada tens a responder ao que essa gente depõe contra ti?
58 Then Peter followed him from a distance, as far as the court of the high priest. And going inside, he sat down with the servants, so that he might see the end.	58 Jesus, no entanto, permanecia calado. Disse-lhe o sumo sacerdote: Por Deus vivo, conjuro-te que nos digas se és o Cristo, o Filho de Deus?
59 Then the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought false testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.	59 Jesus respondeu: Sim. Além disso, eu vos declaro que vereis doravante o Filho do Homem sentar-se à direita do Todo-poderoso, e voltar sobre as nuvens do céu.
60 And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. Then, at the very end, two false witnesses came forward,	60 A estas palavras, o sumo sacerdote rasgou suas vestes, exclamando: Que necessidade temos ainda de testemunhas? Acabastes de ouvir a blasfêmia!
61 and they said, “This man said: ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and, after three days, to rebuild it.’ ”	61 Qual o vosso parecer? Eles responderam: Merece a morte!
62 And the high priest, rising up, said to him, “Have you nothing to respond to what these ones testify against you?”	62 Cuspiram-lhe então na face, bateram-lhe com os punhos e deram-lhe tapas,
63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, “I bind you by an oath to the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”	63 dizendo: Adivinha, ó Cristo: quem te bateu?
64 Jesus said to him: “You have said it. Yet truly I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”	64 Enquanto isso, Pedro estava sentado no pátio. Aproximou-se dele uma das servas, dizendo: Também tu estavas com Jesus, o Galileu.
65 Then the high priest tore his garments, saying: “He has blasphemed. Why do we still need witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy.	65 Mas ele negou publicamente, nestes termos: Não sei o que dizes.
66 How does it seem to you?” So they responded by saying, “He is guilty unto death.”	66 Dirigia-se ele para a porta, a fim de sair, quando outra criada o viu e disse aos que lá estavam: Este homem também estava com Jesus de Nazaré.
67 Then they spit in his face, and they struck him with fists. And others struck his face with the palms of their hands,	67 Pedro, pela segunda vez, negou com juramento: Eu nem conheço tal homem.
68 saying: “Prophesy for us, O Christ. Who is the one that struck you?”	68 Pouco depois, os que ali estavam aproximaram-se de Pedro e disseram: Sim, tu és daqueles; teu modo de falar te dá a conhecer.
69 Yet truly, Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a maidservant approached him, saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”	69 Pedro então começou a fazer imprecações, jurando que nem sequer conhecia tal homem. E, neste momento, cantou o galo.
70 But he denied it in the sight of them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”	70 Pedro recordou-se do que Jesus lhe dissera: Antes que o galo cante, negar-me-ás três vezes. E saindo, chorou amargamente.
71 Then, as he exited by the gate, another maidservant saw him. And she said to those who were there, “This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 And again, he denied it with an oath, “For I do not know the man.”
73 And after a little while, those who were standing nearby came and said to Peter: “Truly, you also are one of them. For even your manner of speaking reveals you.”
74 Then he began to curse and to swear that he had not known the man. And immediately the rooster crowed.
75 And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which he had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And going outside, he wept bitterly.
