1 And Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars here for me, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.”	1 Balaam dit à Balaq: "Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et fournis-moi ici sept taureaux et sept béliers."
2 And when he had acted according to the words of Balaam, they placed a calf and a ram together on each altar.	2 Balaq fit comme avait dit Balaam et offrit en holocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
3 And Balaam said to Balak: “Stand for a little while next to your holocaust, until I go, to see if perhaps the Lord will meet with me. And whatever he will command, I shall speak to you.”	3 Balaam dit alors à Balaq: "Tiens-toi debout près de tes holocaustes tandis que j'irai. Peut-êtreYahvé fera-t-il que je le rencontre? Ce qu'il me fera voir, je te le révélerai." Et il s'en alla sur une une collinedénudée.
4 And after he had quickly departed, God met with him. And Balaam, speaking to him, said: “I have set up seven altars, and I have placed a calf and a ram on each.”	4 Or Dieu vint à la rencontre de Balaam, qui lui dit: "J'ai disposé les sept autels et j'ai offert enholocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel."
5 Then the Lord placed the word in his mouth, and he said: “Return to Balak, and you shall say this.”	5 Yahvé lui mit alors une parole dans la bouche, et lui dit: "Retourne auprès de Balaq et c'est ainsique tu parleras."
6 Returning, he found Balak standing next to his holocaust, with all the leaders of the Moabites.	6 Balaam retourna donc auprès de lui; il le trouva toujours debout près de son holocauste, avec tousles princes de Moab.
7 And taking up his parable, he said: “Balak, king of the Moabites, has led me from Aram, from the mountains of the east. ‘Come forth,’ he said, ‘and curse Jacob. Hurry and condemn Israel.’	7 Il prononça son poème: "Balaq me fait venir d'Aram, le roi de Moab, des monts de Qédem:Viens, maudis-moi Jacob, viens, fulmine contre Israël.
8 How shall I curse him, whom God has not cursed? For what reason would I condemn him, whom the Lord does not condemn?	8 Comment maudirais-je quand Dieu ne maudit pas? Comment fulminerais-je quand Dieu nefulmine pas?
9 I will look upon him from the tops of the stones, and I will consider him from the hills. This people shall dwell alone, and they shall not be counted among the nations.	9 Oui, de la crête du rocher je le vois, du haut des collines je le regarde. Voici un peuple qui habiteà part, il n'est pas rangé parmi les nations.
10 Who can number the dust that is Jacob, and who can know the number of the stock of Israel? May my soul die a just death, and may my end be like theirs.”	10 Qui pourrait compter la poussière de Jacob? Qui pourrait dénombrer la nuée d'Israël? Puissé-jemourir de la mort des justes! Puisse ma fin être comme la leur!"
11 And Balak said to Balaam: “What is this that you are doing? I called for you, in order to curse my enemies, and to the contrary, you bless them.”	11 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Que m'as-tu fait! Je t'avais pris pour maudire mes ennemis et tu prononcessur eux des bénédictions!"
12 He answered him, “How can I say anything other than what the Lord orders?”	12 Balaam reprit: "Ne dois-je pas prendre soin de dire ce que Yahvé me met dans la bouche?"
13 Therefore, Balak said: “Come with me to another place, from where you may see a portion of Israel, though you cannot see them all. Curse them from there.”	13 Balaq lui dit: "Viens donc ailleurs avec moi. Ce peuple que tu vois d'ici, tu n'en vois qu'uneextrémité, tu ne le vois pas tout entier. Maudis-le-moi de là-bas."
14 And when he had led him to a lofty place, on the top of mount Pisgah, Balaam built seven altars, and placing upon each a calf and a ram,	14 Il l'emmena au Champ des Guetteurs, vers le sommet du Pisga. Il y bâtit sept autels et offrit enholocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.
15 he said to Balak, “Stand here next to your holocaust, while I continue on to meet him.”	15 Balaam dit à Balaq: "Tiens-toi debout près de tes holocaustes, tandis que moi j'irai attendre."
16 And when the Lord had met him, and had put the word in his mouth, he said, “Return to Balak, and you shall say this to him.”	16 Dieu vint à la rencontre de Balaam, il lui mit une parole dans la bouche et lui dit: "Retourneauprès de Balaq, et c'est ainsi que tu parleras."
17 Returning, he found him standing next to his holocaust, and the leaders of the Moabites were with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?”	17 Il retourna donc auprès de Balaq; il le trouva toujours debout près de ses holocaustes, avec tousles princes de Moab. "Qu'a dit Yahvé?" Lui demanda Balaq.
18 But, taking up his parable, he said: “Stand, Balak, and pay attention. Listen, you son of Zippor.	18 Et Balaam prononça son poème: "Lève-toi, Balaq, et écoute, prête-moi l'oreille, fils de Cippor.
19 God is not like a man, so that he would lie, nor is he like a son of man, so that he would be changed. Therefore, having spoken, will he not act? Has he ever spoken, and not fulfilled?	19 Dieu n'est pas homme, pour qu'il mente, ni fils d'Adam, pour qu'il se rétracte. Est-ce lui qui ditet ne fait pas, qui parle et n'accomplit pas?
20 I was led here to bless, and I have no strength to hinder the blessing.	20 J'ai reçu la charge d'une bénédiction, je bénirai et je ne me reprendrai pas.
21 There is no idol in Jacob; neither is there a false image to be seen in Israel. The Lord his God is with him, and the resound of royal victory is in him.	21 Je n'ai pas aperçu de mal en Jacob ni vu de souffrance en Israël. Yahvé son Dieu est avec lui;chez lui retentit l'acclamation royale.
22 God has led him away from Egypt; his strength is like that of the rhinoceros.	22 Dieu le fait sortir d'Egypte, Il est pour lui comme des cornes de buffle.
23 There is no soothsaying in Jacob, nor any divination in Israel. In their times, it shall be told to Jacob and to Israel what God has wrought.	23 Car il n'y a pas de présage contre Jacob ni d'augure contre Israël. Alors même que l'on dit àJacob et à Israël: "Que fait donc Dieu?"
24 Behold, the people will rise up like a lioness, and lie down like a lion. But they will not lie down until they devour the prey and drink the blood of the slain.”	24 Voici qu'un peuple se dresse comme une lionne, qu'il surgit comme un lion: il ne se couche pas,qu'il n'ait dévoré sa proie et bu le sang de ceux qu'il a tués."
25 And Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse him, nor bless him.”	25 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Ne le maudis pas, soit! Du moins, ne le bénis pas!"
26 And he said, “Have I not told you that whatever God would command of me, I would do?”	26 Balaam répondit à Balaq: "Ne t'avais-je pas dit: Tout ce que Yahvé dira, je le ferai?"
27 And Balak said to him: “Come and I will lead you to another place. If perhaps it may please God, then you may curse them from there.”	27 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Viens donc, que je t'emmène ailleurs. Et là, peut-être Dieu trouvera bon dele maudire."
28 And when he had led him on to the top of mount Peor, which looks out toward the wilderness,	28 Balaq emmena Balaam au sommet du Péor, qui domine le désert.
29 Balaam said to him, “Build seven altars here for me, and prepare as many calves, and the same number of rams.”	29 Balaam dit alors à Balaq: "Bâtis-moi ici sept autels et fournis-moi ici sept taureaux et septbéliers."
30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and he placed on each altar a calf and a ram.	30 Balaq fit comme avait dit Balaam et offrit en holocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaqueautel.
