Isaiah 28

1 Woe to the crown of arrogance, to the inebriated of Ephraim, and to the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, to those who were at the top of the very fat valley, staggering from wine.	1 Malheur à cette ville, prétentieuse couronne des ivrognes d’Éphraïm, splendide parure aux fleurs fanées sur le haut d’une riche vallée: ils sont tous là à cuver leur vin!
2 Behold, the Lord is powerful and steadfast, like a storm of hail, like a crushing whirlwind, like the force of many waters, inundating, sent forth over a spacious land.	2 Un homme fort et puissant, envoyé par le Seigneur, la jette à terre de sa main, comme un orage de grêle, une tempête désastreuse, comme l’inondation des eaux déchaînées.
3 The arrogant crown of the inebriated of Ephraim will be trampled under foot.	3 Elle sera piétinée, la prétentieuse couronne des ivrognes d’Éphraïm.
4 And the falling flower, the glory of his exultation, who is at the summit of the fat valley, will be like a premature fruit before the ripeness of autumn, which, when the onlooker beholds it, as soon he takes it in his hand, he will devour it.	4 Leur splendide parure aux fleurs fanées sur le haut d’une riche vallée sera comme une figue mûre avant l’été: celui qui la voit la cueille et la mange.
5 In that day, the Lord of hosts will be the crown of glory and the wreath of exultation for the remnant of his people.	5 En ce jour-là, Yahvé Sabaot sera pour le reste de son peuple une parure splendide, un bijou magnifique.
6 And he will be the spirit of judgment for those who sit in judgment, and the strength of those who return from war to the gates.	6 Il se fera esprit de justice pour celui qui siège au tribunal; il se fera vaillance pour ceux qui défendent les portes de la ville.
7 Yet truly, these also have been ignorant due to wine, and they have gone astray due to inebriation. The priest and the prophet have been ignorant because of inebriation. They have been absorbed by wine. They have staggered in drunkenness. They have not known the One who sees. They have been ignorant of judgment.	7 Eux aussi divaguent sous l’effet du vin, la liqueur les fait tituber, prêtres et prophètes sont sous le coup de la boisson. Le vin les égare, la liqueur trouble leurs sens, ils divaguent dans leurs visions, ils bredouillent leurs sentences.
8 For all the tables have been filled with vomit and filth, so much so that there was no place left.	8 Sur toutes les tables des vomissements, plus un endroit propre!
9 To whom will he teach knowledge? And to whom will he grant an understanding of what is heard? To those who have been weaned from the milk, who have been pulled away from the breasts.	9 “Qui prétend-il enseigner? Des enfants à peine sevrés? Des petits bébés? Qui veut-il instruire? Ce n’est que:
10 So then: command, and command again; command, and command again; expect, and expect again; a little here, and a little there.	10 Si tu comprends, tant mieux, si tu ne sais pas, tant pis!”
11 For with the speech of lips and with a different language, he will speak to this people.	11 Eh bien, oui, c’est avec des mots qui font rire, c’est avec une langue étrangère que Yahvé parlera à ce peuple.
12 He said to them: “This is my rest. Refresh the weary,” and, “This is my refreshment.” And yet they were unwilling to listen.	12 Il leur avait dit: “C’est ici le repos, laissez se reposer celui qui est fatigué, c’est le temps de la pause.” Mais ils n’ont pas voulu entendre.
13 And so, the word of the Lord to them will be: “Command, and command again; command, and command again; expect, and expect again; a little here, and a little there,” so that they may go forward and fall backward, and so that they may be broken and ensnared and captured.	13 C’est pourquoi la parole de Yahvé sera pour eux: Si tu comprends, tant mieux, si tu ne sais pas, tant pis! si bien qu’ils marcheront et tomberont à la renverse. Ils se briseront les os, ils tomberont dans le piège et ils seront pris.
14 Because of this, listen to the word of the Lord, you mocking men, who lord it over my people who are at Jerusalem.	14 Écoutez donc la parole de Yahvé, gouvernants de ce peuple de Jérusalem, vous qui vous moquez du monde!
15 For you have said: “We struck a deal with death, and we formed a pact with Hell. When the inundating scourge passes through, it will not overwhelm us. For we have placed our hope in lies, and we are protected by what is false.”	15 Vous dites: “Nous avons un pacte avec la Mort, un contrat avec le séjour des morts, le flot destructeur passera sans nous emporter, car nous avons fait du mensonge notre refuge, nous nous cacherons derrière des paravents!”
16 For this reason, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will set a stone within the foundations of Zion, a tested stone, a cornerstone, a precious stone, which has been established in the foundation: whoever trusts in him need not hurry.	16 Eh bien, voici ce que dit le Seigneur Yahvé: “Regardez, je pose une pierre en Sion, une pierre de granit, une pierre d’angle, une pierre de valeur, une fondation bien posée: qui s’appuie sur elle ne sera pas déçu.
17 And I will establish judgment in weights, and justice in measures. And a hailstorm will overturn hope in what is false; and waters will inundate its protection.	17 Je ferai que le droit soit la mesure, et la justice, le fil à plomb. La grêle balaiera le refuge illusoire, et les eaux emporteront votre abri.
18 And your deal with death will be abolished, and your pact with Hell will not stand. When the inundating scourge passes through, you will be trampled down by it.	18 Votre pacte avec la mort sera rompu, votre contrat avec le séjour des morts ne tiendra pas; le flot destructeur passera et vous emportera.
19 Whenever it passes through, it will take you away. For, at first light of morning, it will pass through, in the day and in the night, and vexation alone will make you understand what you hear.	19 Chaque fois qu’il passera, il vous saisira, matin après matin, de jour comme de nuit, et si vous captez quelque message, vous n’y lirez que l’épouvante.
20 For the bed has been narrowed, so much so that one alone would fall out, and the short blanket is not able to cover two.	20 “Le lit sera trop court pour s’y allonger la couverture trop étroite pour s’y enrouler.”
21 For the Lord will stand, just as at the mountain of divisions. He will be angry, just as in the valley which is in Gibeon, so that he may accomplish his work, his strange work, so that he may complete his work, his work which is foreign even to him.	21 Comme au Mont-des-Brèches, Yahvé surgira, il s’excitera comme au val de Gabaon pour mener à bien son œuvre, une œuvre étrange, pour faire son travail, un travail étonnant!
22 And now, do not be willing to mock, lest your chains be tightened. For I have heard, from the Lord, the God of hosts, about the consummation and the abridgement concerning the entire earth.	22 Vous donc, cessez de vous moquer, de peur qu’on ne resserre vos liens. Sachez-le: Destruction totale et pour tout le pays, voilà ce que j’ai entendu de Yahvé Sabaot.
23 Pay close attention, and listen to my voice! Attend and hear my eloquence!	23 Ouvrez vos oreilles, entendez ma voix, faites attention, écoutez ce que je dis.
24 Would the plowman, after plowing all day so that he may sow, instead cut open and hoe his soil?	24 Le paysan passe-t-il tout le jour à labourer, à retourner et travailler sa terre?
25 Will he not, when he has made the surface level, sow coriander, and scatter cumin, and plant wheat in rows, and barley, and millet, and vetch in their places?	25 Mais non: sitôt préparé son champ, il sème les épices et répand le cumin. Il met le blé, le millet et l’orge, et sur les bords le seigle.
26 For he will be instructed in judgment; his God will teach him.	26 Son Dieu l’a enseigné, lui a donné cette règle.
27 For coriander cannot be threshed with a saw, and a cartwheel cannot revolve over cumin. Instead, coriander is shaken out with a stick, and cumin with a staff.	27 On n’écrasera pas les épices sous le traîneau, on ne passera pas les roues du chariot sur le cumin, mais on bat les épices avec un bâton, et le cumin avec un fléau.
28 But grain for bread must be crushed. Truly, the thresher cannot thresh it unceasingly, and the cartwheel can neither disrupt it, nor break it with its surface.	28 Quand on bat le blé on n’insiste pas trop, on fait passer l’attelage et les roues du chariot, mais on ne l’écrase pas.
29 And this has gone forth from the Lord, the God of hosts, so that he may accomplish his miraculous plan and magnify justice.	29 Tout cela vient de Yahvé Sabaot, il prévoit, et c’est merveilleux, il agit, et ce sont de grandes choses.
