CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
Woe to those who make unfair laws, and who, when writing, write injustice:1 ουαι τοις γραφουσιν πονηριαν γραφοντες γαρ πονηριαν γραφουσιν
in order to oppress the poor in judgment, and to do violence to the case of the humble of my people, in order that widows may be their prey, and that they might plunder the orphan.2 εκκλινοντες κρισιν πτωχων αρπαζοντες κριμα πενητων του λαου μου ωστε ειναι αυτοις χηραν εις αρπαγην και ορφανον εις προνομην
What will you do on the day of visitation and calamity which is approaching from afar? To whom will you flee for assistance? And where will you leave behind your own glory,3 και τι ποιησουσιν εν τη ημερα της επισκοπης η γαρ θλιψις υμιν πορρωθεν ηξει και προς τινα καταφευξεσθε του βοηθηθηναι και που καταλειψετε την δοξαν υμων
so that you may not be bowed down under the chains, and fall with the slain? Concerning all this, his fury was not turned away; instead, his hand was still extended.4 του μη εμπεσειν εις επαγωγην επι πασι τουτοις ουκ απεστραφη ο θυμος αλλ' ετι η χειρ υψηλη
Woe to Assur! He is the rod and the staff of my fury, and my indignation is in their hands.5 ουαι ασσυριοις η ραβδος του θυμου μου και οργης εστιν εν ταις χερσιν αυτων
I will send him to a deceitful nation, and I will order him against the people of my fury, so that he may take away the plunder, and tear apart the prey, and place it to be trampled like the mud of the streets.6 την οργην μου εις εθνος ανομον αποστελω και τω εμω λαω συνταξω ποιησαι σκυλα και προνομην και καταπατειν τας πολεις και θειναι αυτας εις κονιορτον
But he will not consider it to be so, and his heart will not suppose it to be this way. Instead, his heart will be set to crush and to exterminate more than a few nations.7 αυτος δε ουχ ουτως ενεθυμηθη και τη ψυχη ουχ ουτως λελογισται αλλα απαλλαξει ο νους αυτου και του εθνη εξολεθρευσαι ουκ ολιγα
For he will say:8 και εαν ειπωσιν αυτω συ μονος ει αρχων
“Are not my princes like many kings? Is not Calno like Carchemish, and Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus?9 και ερει ουκ ελαβον την χωραν την επανω βαβυλωνος και χαλαννη ου ο πυργος ωκοδομηθη και ελαβον αραβιαν και δαμασκον και σαμαρειαν
In the same manner as my hand reached the kingdoms of the idol, so also will it reach their false images, those of Jerusalem and of Samaria.10 ον τροπον ταυτας ελαβον εν τη χειρι μου και πασας τας αρχας λημψομαι ολολυξατε τα γλυπτα εν ιερουσαλημ και εν σαμαρεια
Should I not do to Jerusalem and her false images, just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”11 ον τροπον γαρ εποιησα σαμαρεια και τοις χειροποιητοις αυτης ουτως ποιησω και ιερουσαλημ και τοις ειδωλοις αυτης
And this shall be: when the Lord will have completed each of his works on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I will act against the fruit of the exalted heart of king Assur, and against the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.12 και εσται οταν συντελεση κυριος παντα ποιων εν τω ορει σιων και εν ιερουσαλημ επαξει επι τον νουν τον μεγαν τον αρχοντα των ασσυριων και επι το υψος της δοξης των οφθαλμων αυτου
For he has said: “I have acted with the strength of my own hand, and I have understood with my own wisdom, and I have removed the limits of the people, and I have plundered their leaders, and, like one with power, I have pulled down those residing on high.13 ειπεν γαρ τη ισχυι ποιησω και τη σοφια της συνεσεως αφελω ορια εθνων και την ισχυν αυτων προνομευσω και σεισω πολεις κατοικουμενας
And my hand has reached to the strength of the people, as to a nest. And, just as the eggs which have been left behind are gathered, so have I gathered the entire earth. And there was no one who moved a wing, or opened a mouth, or uttered a snarl.”14 και την οικουμενην ολην καταλημψομαι τη χειρι ως νοσσιαν και ως καταλελειμμενα ωα αρω και ουκ εστιν ος διαφευξεται με η αντειπη μοι
Should the axe glorify itself over him who wields it? Or can the saw exalt itself over him who pulls it? How can a rod lift itself up against him who wields it, or a staff exalt itself, though it is only wood?15 μη δοξασθησεται αξινη ανευ του κοπτοντος εν αυτη η υψωθησεται πριων ανευ του ελκοντος αυτον ωσαυτως εαν τις αρη ραβδον η ξυλον
Because of this, the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, will send leanness among his fat ones. And under the influence of his glory, a burning ardor will rage, like a consuming fire.16 και ουχ ουτως αλλα αποστελει κυριος σαβαωθ εις την σην τιμην ατιμιαν και εις την σην δοξαν πυρ καιομενον καυθησεται
And the light of Israel will be like a fire, and the Holy One of Israel will be like a flame. And his thorns and briers will be set ablaze and devoured, in one day.17 και εσται το φως του ισραηλ εις πυρ και αγιασει αυτον εν πυρι καιομενω και φαγεται ωσει χορτον την υλην τη ημερα εκεινη
And the glory of his forest and of his beautiful hill will be consumed, from the soul even to the flesh. And he will flee away in terror.18 αποσβεσθησεται τα ορη και οι βουνοι και οι δρυμοι και καταφαγεται απο ψυχης εως σαρκων και εσται ο φευγων ως ο φευγων απο φλογος καιομενης
And what remain of the trees of his forest will be so few, and so easily numbered, that even a child could write them down.19 και οι καταλειφθεντες απ' αυτων εσονται αριθμος και παιδιον γραψει αυτους
And this shall be in that day: those not added to the remnant of Israel, and those who escape of the house of Jacob, will not lean upon him who strikes them. Instead, they will lean upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.20 και εσται εν τη ημερα εκεινη ουκετι προστεθησεται το καταλειφθεν ισραηλ και οι σωθεντες του ιακωβ ουκετι μη πεποιθοτες ωσιν επι τους αδικησαντας αυτους αλλα εσονται πεποιθοτες επι τον θεον τον αγιον του ισραηλ τη αληθεια
The remnant of Jacob, again I say the remnant, will be converted to the mighty God.21 και εσται το καταλειφθεν του ιακωβ επι θεον ισχυοντα
For though your people, O Israel, will be like the sand of the sea, yet only a remnant of them will be converted. The consummation, having been shortened, will be inundated with justice.22 και εαν γενηται ο λαος ισραηλ ως η αμμος της θαλασσης το καταλειμμα αυτων σωθησεται λογον γαρ συντελων και συντεμνων εν δικαιοσυνη
For the Lord, the God of hosts, will accomplish an abbreviation and a consummation, in the midst of all the earth.23 οτι λογον συντετμημενον ποιησει ο θεος εν τη οικουμενη ολη
For this reason, the Lord, the God of hosts, says this: “My people, who inhabit Zion: do not be afraid of Assur. He will strike you with his rod, and he will lift up his staff over you, on the way of Egypt.24 δια τουτο ταδε λεγει κυριος σαβαωθ μη φοβου ο λαος μου οι κατοικουντες εν σιων απο ασσυριων οτι εν ραβδω παταξει σε πληγην γαρ εγω επαγω επι σε του ιδειν οδον αιγυπτου
But after a little while and a brief time, my indignation will be consumed, and my fury will turn to their wickedness.”25 ετι γαρ μικρον και παυσεται η οργη ο δε θυμος μου επι την βουλην αυτων
And the Lord of hosts will raise up a scourge over him, like the scourge of Midian at the rock of Oreb, and he will raise up his rod over the sea, and he will lift it up against the way of Egypt.26 και επεγερει ο θεος επ' αυτους κατα την πληγην την μαδιαμ εν τοπω θλιψεως και ο θυμος αυτου τη οδω τη κατα θαλασσαν εις την οδον την κατ' αιγυπτον
And this shall be in that day: his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke will be taken away from your neck, and the yoke will decay at the appearance of the oil.27 και εσται εν τη ημερα εκεινη αφαιρεθησεται ο φοβος αυτου απο σου και ο ζυγος αυτου απο του ωμου σου και καταφθαρησεται ο ζυγος απο των ωμων υμων
He will approach Aiath; he will cross into Migron; he will entrust his vessels to Michmash.28 ηξει γαρ εις την πολιν αγγαι και παρελευσεται εις μαγεδω και εν μαχμας θησει τα σκευη αυτου
They have passed through in haste; Geba is our seat; Ramah was stupefied; Gibeah of Saul fled.29 και παρελευσεται φαραγγα και ηξει εις αγγαι φοβος λημψεται ραμα πολιν σαουλ φευξεται
Neigh with your voice, daughter of Gallim; pay attention, Laishah, impoverished woman of Anathoth.30 η θυγατηρ γαλλιμ επακουσεται λαισα επακουσεται αναθωθ
Madmenah has moved away; be strengthened, you inhabitants of Gebim.31 εξεστη μαδεβηνα και οι κατοικουντες γιββιρ παρακαλειτε
It is still daylight, so stand at Nob. He will shake his hand against the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.32 σημερον εν οδω του μειναι τη χειρι παρακαλειτε το ορος την θυγατερα σιων και οι βουνοι οι εν ιερουσαλημ
Behold, the sovereign Lord of hosts will crush the little bottle of wine with terror, and the exalted in stature will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low.33 ιδου γαρ ο δεσποτης κυριος σαβαωθ συνταρασσει τους ενδοξους μετα ισχυος και οι υψηλοι τη υβρει συντριβησονται και οι υψηλοι ταπεινωθησονται
And the dense forest will be overturned with iron. And Lebanon, with its exalted ones, will fall.34 και πεσουνται οι υψηλοι μαχαιρα ο δε λιβανος συν τοις υψηλοις πεσειται
