Sirach 20

1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.	1 Meglio è morbidamente riprendere, che con ira, e non divietare colui che si confessa nella orazione.
2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;	2 La concupiscenza del castrato isverginoe la giovinezza;
3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.	3 così colui che per forza giudica.
4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.	4 Come è buona cosa, che colui che è corretto il manifesti per penitenza! Fuggirai così il volontario peccato.
5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.	5 Ed è uno che tace, il quale è trovato savio; ed è da odiare colui ch' è disposto al molto favellare.
6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.	6 Ed è un altro che tace, però che non ha sentimento della parlatura; ed è tacente colui che sa il tempo acconcio a parlare.
7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.	7 L'uomo savio tacerae infino al tempo; e lo sciocco e il semplice non guarderanno tempo.
8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.	8 Colui che usa molte parole, offende l'anima sua; e colui che si toglie signoria ingiustamente, sarà odiato.
9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.	9 L'uomo non ammaestrato procede ne' mali, e in lui è trovamento di danno.
10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.	10 Egli è uno dono che non è utile; ed è uno, il cui merito è doppio.
11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.	11 Ed è una remunerazione per avere fama; ed è chi per umilitade leva il capo.
12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.	12 Ed è chi molte cose ricompera per piccolo prezzo, ed è chi restituisce in sette doppi.
13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.	13 Il savio nelle parole fa sè medesimo amabile; ma le grazie de' matti si gittano.
14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.	14 Lo dono dello insipido non sarà utile a te; però che gli occhi di colui sono settiplicati.
15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.	15 Picciole cose darà, e molte cose rimpropererae; e l'aprimento della bocca sua partorisce molti mali.
16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.	16 Alcuno presta oggi, e domane più domanda; odioso è cotale uomo.
17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.	17 E non avere per amico il pazzo (non sarà amico); non sarà grazia nelli beni di colui.
18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!	18 Coloro che mangiano il pane dello stolto sono di falsa lingua. Oh quanti e quante volte lo scherniranno!
19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.	19 Nè ancora quello che era da avere, darae con diritto senno; distribuiscene similmente e quello che non era d'avere.
20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.	20 Il cadere di falsa lingua è sì come il cadere in suso lo smalto; così lo cadimento de' rei verrà tostamente.
21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.	21 L'uomo sgrazioso è sì come favola; nella bocca delli non ammaestrati sarae continua.
22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.	22 Il proverbio ch' esce della bocca del pazzo, sarà biasimato; però che non lo dice nello suo tempo.
23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.	23 Elli è alcuno che non puote peccare per povertade; e nel suo riposo fia stimolato.
24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.	24 Ed è chi perde l'anima per timidezza, e chi per isciocchezza perde quella; per autorità d' alcuna persona perde sè.
25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.	25 Ed è alcuno che per vergogna promette all'amico; e sì se l'ha guadagnato per nimico.
26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.	26 Sozzo vituperio è nella bocca dell' uomo la bugia; e quella fia spesso nella bocca de' non savi.
27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.	27 Migliore è il ladro, che la continuanza dell' uomo bugiardo; e l'uno e l'altro erediteranno perdizione.
28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.	28 Li costumi delli uomini sono bugie sanza onore; e la confusione di coloro sì è con loro sanza intervallo.
29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.	29 Il savio nelle parole farà grande sè medesimo, e l'uomo prudente adumilierà li potenti.
30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.	30 Chi lavora la terra sua inalza il monte delle biade, e chi opera giustizia sarà esaltato; colui che piace alli gloriosi, schiferà iniquità.
31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.	31 Li presenti e li doni accecano li occhi dei giudici, e sì come al muto nella bocca loro isvolgeranno li castigamenti di coloro.
32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?	32 Sapienza ascosa e tesoro non veduto, che utilità è nell' uno e nell' altro?
33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.	33 Migliore è colui che cela la sciocchezza sua, che l'uomo che nasconde la sapienza sua.
