1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:	1 Voici les noms des Israélites qui entrèrent en Égypte avec Jacob: chacun d’eux était venu avec sa famille.
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,	2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi et Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,	3 Issacar, Zabulon et Benjamin,
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.	4 Dan et Nephtali, Gad et Asher.
5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.	5 Les descendants de Jacob étaient au nombre de 70 personnes. Quant à Joseph, il était déjà en Égypte.
6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,	6 Joseph mourut le premier et, après lui, tous ses frères et toute cette génération.
7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.	7 Les Israélites étaient très féconds, ils se multiplièrent et se développèrent à tel point que le pays en fut rempli.
8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.	8 Un nouveau roi qui n’avait pas connu Joseph gouverna l’Égypte.
9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.	9 Il dit à son peuple: “Le peuple israélite est maintenant plus nombreux et plus fort que le nôtre.
10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”	10 Il nous faut prendre des précautions pour l’empêcher de se développer davantage. Sinon, en cas de guerre, il pourrait bien se joindre à nos ennemis et nous combattre pour quitter ensuite ce pays.”
11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.	11 Alors on imposa aux Israélites des chefs de corvée pour les accabler de travail, et c’est ainsi que l’on construisit les villes qui servaient d’entrepôts pour le Pharaon: Pithom et Ramsès.
12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.	12 Mais plus on les opprimait, plus le peuple grandissait et se développait, si bien que l’on ne supportait plus les Israélites.
13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.	13 Les Égyptiens réduisirent les Israélites en esclavage.
14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.	14 Ils leur rendirent la vie insupportable: ils leur imposèrent par la violence le travail du mortier et des briques et tous les travaux de la campagne.
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)	15 Le roi d’Égypte finit par s’adresser aux deux femmes qui accouchaient les Hébreux: Chifra et Poua. Il leur dit:
16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”	16 “Lorsque vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux et qu’elles seront accroupies sur les deux pierres, regardez: si c’est un fils, faites-le mourir; si c’est une fille, laissez-la vivre.”
17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.	17 Mais les accoucheuses craignaient Dieu. Elles refusèrent d’obéir au roi d’Égypte et laissèrent vivre les garçons.
18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”	18 Le roi d’Égypte appela les accoucheuses et leur dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela? Vous avez laissé vivre les garçons!”
19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”	19 Les accoucheuses répondirent au Pharaon: “Les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme les Égyptiennes, elles sont vigoureuses et, avant que l’accoucheuse n’arrive auprès d’elles, elles ont déjà accouché.”
20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.	20 Dieu était avec les accoucheuses, si bien que le peuple augmenta et devint très puissant.
21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.	21 Quant aux accoucheuses qui l’avaient craint, Dieu leur donna une nombreuse famille.
22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”	22 Pharaon donna donc cet ordre à tout son peuple: “Vous jetterez dans le Nil tous les garçons qui naîtront, mais vous laisserez vivre les filles.”
