Then Jehoshaphat, his son, reigned in his place. And he grew strong against Israel.1 Son fils Josaphat régna à sa place et renforça son pouvoir contre Israël.
And he appointed numbers of soldiers in all the cities of Judah that had been fortified with walls. And he placed garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had seized.2 Il plaça des troupes dans toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda, et il établit des préfets dans le pays de Juda et dans les villes d’Éphraïm que son père Aza avait prises.
And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father, David. And he did not trust in the Baals,3 Yahvé fut avec Josaphat, car il suivait le chemin que son père avait suivi au début, et il ne rechercha pas les Baals.
but in the God of his father. And he advanced in his precepts, and not according to the sins of Israel.4 Au contraire, il rechercha le Dieu de son père et il suivit ses commandements au lieu d’imiter la conduite d’Israël.
And the Lord confirmed the kingdom in his hand. And all of Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat. And innumerable riches were brought to him, and much glory.5 C’est pourquoi Yahvé affermit la royauté entre ses mains: tous les Judéens payaient un tribut à Josaphat et c’est ainsi qu’il eut richesses et honneurs en abondance.
And when his heart had taken courage because of the ways of the Lord, he now also took away the high places and the sacred groves from Judah.6 Il suivit avec enthousiasme les voies de Yahvé et de nouveau il fit disparaître de Juda les Hauts-Lieux et les pieux sacrés.
Then, in the third year of his reign, he sent Benhail, and Obadiah, and Zechariah, and Nethanel, and Micaiah, from among his leaders, so that they might teach in the cites of Judah.7 La troisième année de son règne, il envoya ses chefs: Ben-Hayil, Obadya, Zékaryas, Nétanéel, Mikayas, pour instruire les cités de Juda.
And with them were the Levites Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah, and also Asahel and Shemiramoth and Jehonathan, and the Levites Adonijah and Tobijah and Tobadonijah. And with them were the priests Elishama and Jehoram.8 Les lévites Chémayas, Nétanya, Zébadya, Azaël, Chémiramot, Yonathan, Adoniyas, Tobiyas et les prêtres Élichama et Yoram, les accompagnaient.
And they were teaching the people in Judah, having with them the book of the law of the Lord. And they were traveling through all the cities of Judah, and were instructing the people.9 Emmenant avec eux le livre de la Loi de Yahvé pour enseigner Juda, ils firent le tour de toutes les villes de Juda en enseignant le peuple.
And so, the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands which were around Judah. And they did not dare to make war against Jehoshaphat.10 Une terreur venue de Yahvé s’empara alors de tous les royaumes situés sur les frontières de Juda, ils ne furent pas en guerre avec Josaphat.
Moreover, the Philistines carried gifts to Jehoshaphat, and a tribute in silver. Also, the Arabians brought cattle: seven thousand seven hundred rams, and the same number of he-goats.11 Des Philistins apportèrent à Josaphat des cadeaux et de l’argent en tribut; même les Arabes lui amenèrent du petit bétail (7 700 béliers et 7 700 boucs).
Therefore, Jehoshaphat increased and was magnified, even on high. And in Judah, he built houses in the likeness of towers, and walled cities.12 La gloire de Josaphat ne cessait de grandir. Il construisit des forteresses et des villes de dépôts en Juda.
And he prepared many works in the cities of Judah. Also, there were men experienced in warfare in Jerusalem,13 Il y avait d’importantes réserves dans les villes de Juda, et à Jérusalem des hommes de guerre entraînés.
and this is the number of them, by each of the houses and families. In Judah, the leader of the army was Adnah, the commander; and with him were three hundred thousand very experienced men.14 En voici le recensement par famille: Pour Juda: chef de mille: Adna, général, et avec lui 300 000 guerriers entraînés;
After him, Jehohanan was the leader; and with him were two hundred eighty thousand.15 sous ses ordres Yohanan, général, avec 280 000 hommes;
Also after him, there was Amasiah, the son of Zichri, who was consecrated to the Lord; and with him were two hundred thousand strong men.16 et Amasias fils de Zikri, engagé volontairement au service de Yahvé avec 200 000 guerriers entraînés.
Following him, there was Eliada, who was experienced in battle; and with him were two hundred thousand, holding bow and shield.17 Pour Benjamin: le courageux Élyada avec 200 000 hommes armés de l’arc et du bouclier rond;
Then too, after him, there was Jehozabad; and with him were one hundred eighty thousand lightly-armed solders.18 sous ses ordres: Yozabad avec 180 000 hommes équipés pour la guerre.
All these were at the hand of the king, aside from the others, whom he had positioned in the walled cities, in all of Judah.19 C’étaient eux les officiers du roi, sans compter ceux que le roi avait placés dans les villes fortifiées de tout Juda.
