Joshua 9

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent	1 Al enterarse de esto, todos los reyes que estaban de este lado del Jordán, en la Montaña, en la Sefelá, en toda la costa del gran Mar, hasta la región del Líbano –hititas, amorreos, cananeos, perizitas, jivitas y jebuseos–
2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.	2 se aliaron para combatir de común acuerdo contra Josué y contra Israel.
3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,	3 También los habitantes de Gabaón se enteraron de lo que había hecho Josué con Jericó y con Ai,
4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.	4 y entonces decidieron recurrir a la astucia. Reunieron provisiones para el viaje, tomaron alforjas viejas para sus asnos y unos odres viejos, rotos y vueltos a coser;
5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.	5 se calzaron sandalias viejas y remendadas, y se vistieron con ropa gastada. Todo el pan que llevaban como alimento estaba reseco y reducido a migajas.
6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'	6 Así fueron hasta el campamento de Josué, en Guilgal, y le dijeron, a él y a los hombres de Israel: «Venimos de un país lejano; por eso, hagan una alianza con nosotros».
7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'	7 Pero los hombres de Israel respondieron a aquellos jivitas: «Tal vez ustedes habitan por aquí, entre nosotros. ¿Cómo vamos a hacer una alianza con ustedes?».
8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'	8 Ellos dijeron a Josué: «Nosotros somos tus servidores». «¿Quiénes son ustedes?, les preguntó Josué, ¿de dónde vienen?
9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,	9 Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros, tus servidores, venimos de un país muy lejano, atraídos por el renombre del Señor, tu Dios. Porque hemos oído hablar de él, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto,
10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.	10 y de la manera que trató a los dos reyes amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sijón, el rey de Jesbón, y a Og, el rey de Basán que residía en Astarot.
11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."	11 Por eso nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestro país nos dijeron: «Provéanse de víveres para el camino, vayan a su encuentro y díganles: somos sus servidores, hagan por lo tanto una alianza con nosotros».
12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.	12 Este es nuestro pan: todavía estaba caliente cuando nos proveímos de él en nuestras casas, el día en que salimos al encuentro de ustedes; ahora está reseco y convertido en migajas.
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'	13 Estos son los odres de vino: eran nuevos cuando los llenamos, y ahora están aquí, todos rotos. Y estas son nuestra ropa y nuestras sandalias, gastadas por un viaje excesivamente largo».
14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.	14 Entonces los israelitas comieron de sus provisiones sin consultar la decisión del Señor.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.	15 Josué hizo las paces con ellos y también el pacto de conservarles la vida; los jefes de la comunidad, por su parte, les hicieron un juramento.
16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.	16 Pero tres días después de haber concluido este pacto, los israelitas se enteraron de que aquellos hombres eran de un pueblo vecino y que vivían en las inmediaciones.
17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.	17 Entonces levantaron sus carpas, y en tres días llegaron a las ciudades que ellos habitaban. Estas eran Gabaón, Quefirá, Beerot y Quiriat Iearím.
18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.	18 Los israelitas no los mataron, porque los jefes de la comunidad les habían hecho un juramento por el Señor, el Dios de Israel. Pero toda la comunidad murmuró contra sus jefes.
19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.	19 Los jefes declararon a la comunidad en pleno: «Nosotros les hemos prestado un juramento por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, y ahora no podemos tocarlos.
20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'	20 Haremos con ellos lo siguiente: los dejaremos vivir para no atraer sobre nosotros la ira del Señor, a causa del juramento que les hemos hecho».
21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.	21 Luego los jefes les dijeron: «¡Qué vivan! Pero estarán al servicio de la comunidad como leñadores y aguateros». Y la comunidad obró de acuerdo con lo que habían dicho los jefes.
22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?	22 Josué hizo comparecer a los gabaonitas y les dijo: «¿Por qué ustedes nos han engañado asegurando que vivían muy lejos de nosotros, cuando en realidad viven aquí, en las inmediaciones?
23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'	23 Ahora pesa sobre ustedes una maldición, y por eso nunca faltarán entre ustedes esclavos, que sirvan como leñadores y aguateros en la Casa de mi Dios».
24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.	24 Ellos respondieron a Josué: «Nosotros estábamos perfectamente informados de que el Señor, tu Dios, había dado a su servidor Moisés la orden de entregarles todo el país, y de exterminar a todos los habitantes que encontraran a su paso. Ante la presencia de ustedes, temimos mucho por nuestras vidas, y por eso hemos hecho esto.
25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'	25 Ahora nos tienes en tus manos; trátanos como te parezca más conveniente y justo».
26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.	26 Pero Josué los trató según lo convenido y los libró de los Israelitas, que no los mataron.
27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.	27 Desde aquel día, Josué los destinó a cortar leña y a sacar agua para la comunidad y para el altar del Señor, en el lugar que el Señor eligiera. Esto es lo que hacen todavía hoy.
