NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 Thus they were appropriately punished by similar creatures and tormented by swarms of vermin.	1 Per queste cose e somiglianti a queste sostennero degnamente tormenti, e da moltitudine di bestie sono sterminati.
2 In contrast to this punishment, you did your people a kindness and, to satisfy their sharp appetite,provided quails -- a luscious rarity -- for them to eat.	2 Per li quali tormenti tu disponesti bene, il popolo tuo, al quale tu dèsti il volere del suo dilettamento, nuovo sapore, apparecchiandoli a mangiare coturnici,
3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion.	3 sì come quelli che desiderano tale vivanda; e perciò sono loro dimostrate e mandate, acciò che si rimovessono anco dalle necessarie concupiscenze; e costoro in corto tempo, fatti bisognosi, mangiarono di nuova vivanda.
4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured.	4 Elli convenia che a coloro, che usavano tirannia, morte sopravvenisse sanza alcuna scusa; e a costoro bisognava dimostrare solamente, in che guisa li nimici si esterminavano.
5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end.	5 Però che elli erano esterminati da' morsi delli perversi serpenti, quando sopravvenne loro l'ira di crudeli bestie.
6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law,	6 Ma l'ira tua non durò sempre, ma a correzione e in breve sono turbati, avendo segno di (correzione e di) sanitade a commemorazione del comandamento della legge tua.
7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all.	7 Colui che si convertie, non per questo che vedeva si sanava, ma per te, salvatore di tutti.
8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil;	8 In questo mostrasti tu alli nimici nostri, che tu se' colui che liberi da ogni mal?.
9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures.	9 Ma li morsi delle mosche e delle locuste uccisero coloro; e non fue trovata sanitade all'anima di coloro, però ch' elli erano degni d'essere sterminati di queste cotali cose.
10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them.	10 Li denti delli dragoni (animali) velenosi non vinsero li figliuoli tuoi; la tua soccorrente misericordia li sanoe.
11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness.	11 Nella memoria de' sermoni tuoi erano esaminati, e tostamente sanati, acciò che cadendo in alta dimenticanza, non potessono usare il tuo adiutorio.
12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord.	12 Nè erba nè impiastro sanoe coloro; ma solo. il tuo sermone, Signore, il quale sana tutte le cose.
13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again.	13 Tu se', Signore, colui che hai potestade della vita e della morte, e che conduci alla porta della morte, e ritrai.
14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received.	14 L'uomo uccide per malizia (l'anima sua); e quando lo spirito ne sia uscito, non ritornerae, e non rivocherae l'anima ch' è ricevuta.
15 It is not possible to escape your hand.	15 Ma ischifare la mano tua sì è impossibile.
16 The godless who refused to acknowledge you were scourged by the strength of your arm, pursued byno ordinary rains, hail and unrelenting downpours, and consumed by fire.	16 Li malvagi, che hanno detto che non ti conoscono, sono flagellati per la fortezza del tuo braccio; elli sostennero persecuzione di nuove acque e di gragnuola e di piove, e per fuoco sono consumati.
17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright.	17 E quello ch' era mirabile nell'acqua, che ogni cosa spegne, ella ardeva più che il fuoco; vendicatore è il mondo de' giusti.
18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them;	18 Fue uno tempo che il fuoco divenia mansueto, sì che li animali, ch' erano mandati alli empii, non ardevano, acciò che quelli che il vedevano sapessono che qui patiscono persecuzione per giudizio di Dio.
19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land.	19 E uno tempo il fuoco ardeva nell' acqua sopra la sua potenza, per isterminare la malvagia generazione della terra.
20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste.	20 Per li quali tu comandasti che il popolo tuo fosse nutricato dello angelico cibo, e apparecchiasti loro pane dal cielo sanza fatica, avendo in sè ogni dilettamento, e suavitade d' ogni sapore.
21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished.	21 Tu mostrasti la ricchezza tua, che tu hai, verso li figliuoli tuoi, contentando la voluntade di ciascuno, acciò che ciascuno a quello che voleva si converta.
22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain,	22 La neve e il ghiaccio sì sosteneano la forza del fuoco, e non si guastavano, acciò che sapessono che il fuoco ardente nella grandine e la piova fulgurante distruggerà li frutti de' nemici.
23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright.	23 Questo fuoco, perchè una altra volta si nutricassero i giusti, sì dimenticoe la sua virtude.
24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you.	24 La creatura tua, servendo a te fattore, sì deserve nel tormento contro alli ingiusti; e fassi più lieve a fare bene per coloro che si confidano in te.
25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need;	25 Per questo, e allora tutte le cose transfigurate, servivano alla grazia tua nutrice di tutti, a volontade di coloro (li quali erano) che te desideravano.
26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you.	26 E conobbono li figliuoli tuoi, li quali tu, Signore, amasti, che li uomini non si pascono solo delli frutti che nascono, ma la tua parola conserva coloro che credono in te.
27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam,	27 Quello che non si poteva disertare dal fuoco, incontinente scaldato dal raggio del sole inverminiva,
28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday;	28 acciò ch' elli fosse a tutti manifesto, ch' elli convegna che al sole prevenga la benedizione tua, e adorare te al levare della luce.
29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste.	29 La speranza dello ingrato, sì come il ghiaccio del verno, (che) si strugge; e disperderassi come l'acqua soperchia.
