2 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA VOLGARE
1 It also happened that seven brothers were arrested with their mother. The king tried to force them totaste some pork, which the Law forbids, by torturing them with whips and scourges.	1 E avvenne che furono pigliati sette fratelli colla madre sua insieme, ed erano costretti dal re contro alla legge di toccar le carni del porco, con percosse e battiture di corregge (di pelle) di cuoio di bue.
2 One of them, acting as spokesman for the others, said, 'What are you trying to find out from us? Weare prepared to die rather than break the laws of our ancestors.'	2 E uno di loro, il quale era il primo, disse così che cerchi tu, e che vuoi tu imparare da noi? Noi siamo apparecchiati più tosto di morire, che prevaricare le leggi paterne, e quelle di Dio.
3 The king, in a fury, ordered pans and cauldrons to be heated over a fire.	3 E corrucciato il re, comandò che fusse accese le padelle e vasi di bronzo; le quali sùbito accese,
4 As soon as these were red-hot, he commanded that their spokesman should have his tongue cut out,his head scalped and his extremities cut off, while the other brothers and his mother looked on.	4 comandò che a colui, che prima parlò, li fusse tratta la lingua; e anco, levata la coteca del capo, comandò li fusse tagliate (tutte) le mani e li piedi, tutti gli altri fratelli e la madre vedendolo.
5 When he had been rendered completely helpless, the king gave orders for him to be brought, stilbreathing, to the fire and fried alive in a pan. As the smoke from the pan drifted about, his mother and the restencouraged one another to die nobly, with such words as these,	5 Ed essendo così fatto inutile per tutto, comandò che fusse posto al fuoco, e anco così spirando ardesse nella padella; nella quale lungamente cruciandosi, li altri insieme con la madre si confortavano di morire fortemente,
6 'The Lord God is watching and certainly feels sorry for us, as Moses declared in his song, which clearlystates that "he wil take pity on his servants." '	6 dicendo: lo Signore Iddio vedrà la verità, e consolerassi in noi, sì come nella protestazione del cantico dichiarò Moise: E CONSOLERASSI NELLI SERVI SUOI.
7 When the first had left the world in this way, they brought the second forward to be tortured. Afterstripping the skin from his head, hair and al , they asked him, 'Wil you eat some pork, before your body istortured limb by limb?'	7 E morto il primo a questo modo, menavano lo seguente a disprezzarlo; e levata che li fu la coteca del capo con li capelli, dimandoro s' egli mangerebbe inanzi che fusse punito per i membri di tutto il corpo.
8 Replying in his ancestral tongue, he said, 'No!' So he too was put to the torture in his turn.	8 E lui, rispondendo con la voce paterna, disse: non farò. E per questo nel luogo del primo fu tormentato.
9 With his last breath he exclaimed, 'Cruel brute, you may discharge us from this present life, but theKing of the world wil raise us up, since we die for his laws, to live again for ever.'	9 Ed essendo nell' ultimo del spirito, disse; tu certamente, scelestissimo, ne perdi in questa vita; ma il re del mondo, poi che noi saremo morti per le sue leggi, ci risusciterà nella resurrezione della eterna vita.
10 After him, they tortured the third, who on being asked for his tongue promptly thrust it out and boldlyheld out his hands,	10 Dopo questo il terzo è dileggiato, e dimandatoli la lingua, sùbito la mise fuori, e constantemente stese le mani.
11 courageously saying, 'Heaven gave me these limbs; for the sake of his laws I have no concern forthem; from him I hope to receive them again.'	11 E disse con fiducia: io possiedo queste cose dal cielo, ma per amor delle leggi di Dio disprezzo tutte queste cose, però ch' io spero di ricever tutte queste cose da lui.
12 The king and his attendants were astounded at the young man's courage and his utter indifference tosuffering.	12 Si che (dicendo a questo modo) si maravigliò il re, e quelli ch' erano con lui, (della costanza e) dell' animo del giovane, che come nulla esistima i cruciati.
13 When this one was dead they subjected the fourth to the same torments and tortures.	13 E morto che fu questo, similmente cruciavano il quarto.
14 When he neared his end he cried, 'Ours is the better choice, to meet death at men's hands, yet relyingon God's promise that we shal be raised up by him; whereas for you there can be no resurrection to new life.'	14 Ed essendo già propinquo alla morte, disse così coloro i quali sono dati alla morte dagli uomini più tosto debbono aspettare con speranza da Dio, un' altra volta esser resuscitati da lui; ma a te non sarà resurrezione a vita.
15 Next they brought forward the fifth and began torturing him.	15 E avendo pigliato il quinto, lo cruciavano anco lui. E lui riguardando al re, disse:
16 But he looked at the king and said, 'You have power over human beings, mortal as you are, and canact as you please. But do not think that our race has been deserted by God.	16 Tu hai autorità fra gli uomini, avvenga che tu sii corruttibile; tu fai quello che vuoi; ma non voler pensare che la nostra gente sia abbandonata da Dio.
17 Only wait, and you wil see in your turn how his mighty power wil torment you and your descendants.'	17 Ma tu abbi un poco pazienza, e vederai la grande sua podestà, a che modo te e la progenie tua sarà tormentata.
18 After him, they led out the sixth, and his dying words were these, 'Do not delude yourself: we aresuffering like this through our own fault, having sinned against our own God; hence, appal ing things havebefal en us-	18 Dopo questo menarono anco il sesto, e questo cominciando a morire disse così: non volere errare invano; però che noi sosteniamo queste cose per cagion di noi istessi, però che abbiamo peccato contro al Dio nostro; e per degna ammirazione sono fatte queste cose in noi.
19 but do not think you yourself wil go unpunished for attempting to make war on God.'	19 Ma tu non pensar di scampare sanza punizione, il qual hai tentato di combattere contro a Dio.
20 But the mother was especial y admirable and worthy of honourable remembrance, for she watchedthe death of seven sons in the course of a single day, and bravely endured it because of her hopes in the Lord.	20 E la madre loro, mirabile e degna di memoria delli buoni, con l'animo costante sostenea, vedendosi dinanzi agli occhi suoi esser uccisi sette figliuoli in uno dì, per la speranza la qual avea in Dio.
21 Indeed she encouraged each of them in their ancestral tongue; fil ed with noble conviction, shereinforced her womanly argument with manly courage, saying to them,	21 E confortava ciascuno di loro, ripiena di sapienza, fortemente colla paterna voce; e avendo inserto l'animo virile nelli pensieri feminili,
22 'I do not know how you appeared in my womb; it was not I who endowed you with breath and life, Ihad not the shaping of your every part.	22 disse a loro: io non so a che modo voi appariste nel mio ventre, e anco io non diedi a voi lo spirito e l'anima e la vita, e non formai li membri di ciascuno di voi.
23 And hence, the Creator of the world, who made everyone and ordained the origin of al things, wil inhis mercy give you back breath and life, since for the sake of his laws you have no concern for yourselves.'	23 Ma egli è il Creatore del mondo, il quale formò la natività dell' uomo; colui che trovò la origine delli uomini vi renderà un' altra fiata la vita con misericordia, così come voi disprezzate voi stessi per amore delle sue leggi.
24 Antiochus thought he was being ridiculed, suspecting insult in the tone of her voice; and as theyoungest was still alive he appealed to him not with mere words but with promises on oath to make him both richand happy if he would abandon the traditions of his ancestors; he would make him his Friend and entrust himwith public office.	24 E Antioco, vedendosi disprezzato, e insieme disprezzata la voce di chi lo vituperava, essendo anco rimasto il più giovane, non solamente lo confortava con parole, ma anco con giuramento affermava che lo farebbe ricco e beato; e se lui si rimovesse delle leggi paterne, sarebbe sempre suo amico, e arebbe tutto quello li fosse bisogno.
25 The young man took no notice at al , and so the king then appealed to the mother, urging her toadvise the youth to save his life.	25 E conciosia cosa che il giovane per alcuno modo non si potesse inclinare, chiamò la madre, e sì la persuadeva ch' ella volesse confortar il figliuolo alla salute sua.
26 After a great deal of urging on his part she agreed to try persuasion on her son.	26 E avendola confortata con molte parole, promiseli di persuadere al suo figliuolo.
27 Bending over him, she fooled the cruel tyrant with these words, uttered in their ancestral tongue, 'Myson, have pity on me; I carried you nine months in my womb and suckled you three years, fed you and rearedyou to the age you are now, and provided for you.	27 Inclinata dunque al suo figliuolo, facendosi beffe del crudele tiranno, disse colla voce paternale: figliuolo mio, abbi misericordia di me, la quale ti portai nove mesi nel ventre, e per tre anni diediti lo latte, e sì ti nutricai, e a questa età io ti condussi.
28 I implore you, my child, look at the earth and sky and everything in them, and consider how God madethem out of what did not exist, and that human beings come into being in the same way.	28 Dimandoti, figliuolo mio, che tu guardi in cielo, e alla terra e a tutte quelle cose che sono in loro; e intendi che tutte queste cose fece Iddio di niente, e anco la generazione degli uomini;
29 Do not fear this executioner, but prove yourself worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that Imay receive you back with them in the day of mercy.'	29 e così nell' animo tuo sì fermi, che tu non temi questo omicidiale; ma essendo fatto degno delli tuoi fratelli, ricevi la morte, acciò che in quella miserazione ti riceva con li tuoi fratelli.
30 She had hardly finished, when the young man said, 'What are you all waiting for? I wil not complywith the king's ordinance; I obey the ordinance of the Law given to our ancestors through Moses.	30 E parlando la madre anco queste cose, disse il giovane: che aspettate voi? non voglio ubedire al comandamento del re, ma al comandamento della legge la qual fu data a noi per Moisè.
31 As for you, who have contrived every kind of evil against the Hebrews, you wil certainly not escapethe hands of God.	31 Ma tu il qual sei fatto inventor di ogni malizia contro agli ebrei, non fuggirai le mani di Dio.
32 We are suffering for our own sins;	32 Però che noi patimo per i peccati nostri.
33 and if, to punish and discipline us, our living Lord is briefly angry with us, he wil be reconciled with usin due course.	33 E se il Signore nostro è un poco irato con noi per riprension e correzion nostra, (ma voglio tu sappi che) lui si riconcilierà con i servi suoi.
34 But you, unholy wretch and wickedest of vil ains, what cause have you for pride, nourishing vainhopes and raising your hand against his servants? -	34 Ma tu, o scelestissimo e viziosissimo di tutti gli uomini, non ti voler (gloriare ed) esaltare con vane speranze infiammato contro alli suoi servi.
35 for you have not yet escaped the judgement of God the almighty, the al -seeing.	35 Però che tu non sei anco fuggito lo giudicio dello onnipotente Dio, il qual conosce ogni cosa.
36 Our brothers, having endured brief pain, for the sake of ever-flowing life have died for the covenant ofGod, while you, by God's judgement, wil have to pay the just penalty for your arrogance.	36 Li miei fratelli, ben che abbino sostenuto un poco di dolore, sono fatti partecipi della eterna vita; ma tu collo giudicio di Dio satisfarai con li tormenti giusti la tua ambizione.
37 I too, like my brothers, surrender my body and life for the laws of my ancestors, begging God quicklyto take pity on our nation, and by trials and afflictions to bring you to confess that he alone is God,	37 Io veramente, sì come hanno fatto li miei fratelli, do l'anima e il corpo mio per le (nostre) leggi paterne, invocando Iddio, più maturamente si facci propizio alla gente nostra, e facciti confessare con tormenti e percosse, ch' esso è solo Iddio.
38 so that with my brothers and myself there may be an end to the wrath of the Almighty, rightly let looseon our whole nation.'	38 E in me e in li miei fratelli termini l'ira dello onnipetente Iddio, la qual è sopravenuta giustamente sopra tutta la nostra gente.
39 The king fel into a rage and treated this one more cruel y than the others, for he was himself smartingfrom the young man's scorn.	39 Allora il re, acceso d' ira contro a questo giovane, sopra tutti gli altri più crudelmente lo tormentò, sostenendo con indignazione di esser dileggiato.
40 And so the last brother met his end undefiled and with perfect trust in the Lord.	40 E costui anco mondo (e puro) se ne morì, confidandosi in Dio per tutte queste cose.
41 The mother was the last to die, after her sons.	41 Ultimamente dopo i (suoi) figliuoli anco la madre fu consumata (e morta).
42 But let this be sufficient account of the ritual meals and monstrous tortures.	42 Delli sacrificii adunque e delle grandi crudelità assai è detto.
