Nehemiah 13

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 At that time they were reading to the people from the Book of Moses, when they found this written in it,'No Ammonite or Moabite is to be admitted to the assembly of God, and this is for al time,	1 In quel tempo si lesse il libro di Mosè alla presenza del popolo. Vi si trovò scritto che l'Ammonita e il Moabita non dovranno mai entrare nell'assemblea di Dio;
2 since they did not come to meet the Israelites with bread and water, and even hired Balaam to opposethem by cursing them; but our God turned the curse into a blessing.'	2 perché non vennero incontro ai figli d'Israele con pane e acqua e perché questi ultimi pagarono Balaam perché maledicesse Israele. Ma il nostro Dio cambiò quella maledizione in benedizione.
3 Having heard the Law, they excluded al foreigners from Israel.	3 Com'ebbero ascoltato la legge, essi esclusero da Israele tutti i forestieri.
4 Earlier, Eliashib the priest, who was in charge of the rooms of the Temple of our God, and who wasclose to Tobiah,	4 Prima di questi fatti, il sacerdote preposto alle camere della casa di Dio, Eliasib, parente di Tobia,
5 had provided him with a large room where they previously used to store the meal offerings, incense,utensils, tithes of corn, wine and oil, that is, the part of the Levites, singers and gatekeepers, and thecontributions for the priests.	5 aveva preparato per costui un'ampia stanza, là dove prima venivano riposte le offerte, l'incenso, gli utensili, le decime del grano, del mosto e dell'olio, ossia quanto spettava per legge ai leviti, ai cantori, ai portinai e il contributo per i sacerdoti.
6 While al this was going on I was away from Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes kingof Babylon I had gone to see the king. But after some time I asked the king for permission to leave,	6 In tutto questo periodo io non ero stato a Gerusalemme, perché nell'anno trentaduesimo di Artaserse, re di Babilonia, ero ritornato presso il re. Dopo un certo tempo, avendone fatto richiesta al re,
7 and returned to Jerusalem, where I learned about the crime which Eliashib had committed for Tobiah'sbenefit, by providing him with a room in the courts of the Temple of God.	7 ritornai a Gerusalemme. Mi resi conto allora del male che aveva fatto Eliasib, a vantaggio di Tobia, adattandogli una stanza nei cortili della casa di Dio;
8 I was extremely displeased and threw al Tobiah's household goods out of the room and into thestreet.	8 e ne rimasi fortemente irritato. Feci gettare tutte le masserizie della casa di Tobia fuori della stanza
9 I then gave orders for the room to be purified, and had the utensils of the Temple of God, the mealofferings and the incense, all replaced.	9 e ordinai che i locali venissero purificati. Poi vi feci rimettere gli utensili del tempio di Dio, le offerte e l'incenso.
10 I also learned that the Levites had not been receiving their al ocations, as a result of which theLevites and singers who performed the liturgy had al withdrawn to their farms.	10 Venni anche a sapere che le porzioni dovute ai leviti non erano state consegnate e che i leviti e i cantori, che facevano servizio, se n'erano fuggiti ciascuno alla sua terra.
11 I then reprimanded the officials. 'Why is the Temple of God deserted?' I asked. And I col ected themtogether again and brought them back to their posts;	11 Rimproverai allora i magistrati e dissi: "Per qual ragione la casa di Dio è stata abbandonata?". Poi radunai i leviti e li ristabilii nel loro ufficio.
12 and al Judah then delivered the tithe of corn, wine and oil to the storehouses.	12 Tutto Giuda portò ai magazzini le decime del grano, del mosto e dell'olio.
13 As supervisors of the storehouses I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, Pedaiah oneof the Levites and, as their assistant, Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, since they were consideredreliable people; their duty was to make the distributions to their kinsmen.	13 Affidai la sorveglianza dei magazzini al sacerdote Selemia, allo scriba Zadòk e a Pedaia, uno dei leviti, e, come loro aiutante, a Canan, figlio di Zaccur, figlio di Mattania, giacché costoro erano ritenuti persone di fiducia. Spettava ad essi il compito di far le ripartizioni per i loro fratelli.
14 Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out the good deeds which I have done for theTemple of my God and its observances!	14 Per questo ricòrdati di me, o Dio mio, e non dimenticare le opere di pietà che ho compiuto per il tempio del mio Dio e per la vigilanza sopra di esso.
15 At the same time I saw people in Judah treading the winepress, bringing in sacks of grain andloading donkeys on the Sabbath; they were also bringing wine, grapes, figs and every kind of merchandise intoJerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I forbade them to sel the food.	15 In quel tempo osservai in Giuda alcuni che in giorno di sabato pigiavano l'uva, portavano mucchi di derrate e caricavano sugli asini vino, uva, fichi e ogni sorta di fardelli e li portavano di sabato a Gerusalemme. Allora li rimproverai a motivo del giorno in cui vendevano derrate.
16 Tyrians living there were bringing in fish and every kind of merchandise which they were sel ing tothe Judaeans on the Sabbath in Jerusalem itself.	16 Alcune persone di Tiro, che avevano preso dimora in Gerusalemme, importavano pesce e ogni specie di mercanzia e poi la vendevano ai figli di Giuda di sabato e in Gerusalemme.
17 So I also reprimanded the leading men of Judah, saying to them, 'What a wicked way to behave,profaning the Sabbath day!	17 Allora rimproverai i notabili di Giuda e dissi loro: "Che cos'è questa mala azione che andate compiendo, col profanare il giorno di sabato?
18 Was this not exactly what your ancestors did, with the result that our God brought al this miserydown on us and on this city? And now you are adding to the wrath hanging over Israel by profaning the Sabbathyourselves!'	18 Non fecero lo stesso i vostri padri? E così il nostro Dio ha fatto venire tutta questa rovina sopra di noi e sopra questa città! Voi accrescete la sua ira contro Israele profanando il sabato!".
19 So when the gates of Jerusalem were getting dark at the approach of the Sabbath, I gave orders forthe doors to be shut and directed that they were not to be opened again until the Sabbath was over. I stationedsome of my attendants at the gates to make sure that no merchandise was brought in on the Sabbath day.	19 E detti ordine che appena le porte di Gerusalemme cominciavano ad essere nell'ombra, prima del sabato, le porte fossero chiuse. Aggiunsi che non si dovevano aprire fino a dopo il sabato. Collocai anche qualcuno dei miei uomini davanti alle porte, affinché nessun carico entrasse in giorno di sabato.
20 So the traders and dealers in goods of al kinds spent the night outside Jerusalem once or twice,	20 Ma i mercanti e i venditori di ogni sorta di mercanzie passarono la notte appena fuori di Gerusalemme una o due volte.
21 until I reprimanded them. I said to them, 'Why are you spending the night in front of the wal ? Do itagain, and I shal use force on you.' After this, they did not come on the Sabbath.	21 Allora io li rimproverai fortemente e dissi loro: "Per qual ragione voi passate la notte davanti alle mura? Se lo fate ancora una volta, metterò le mani su di voi!". Da quel tempo non vennero più di sabato.
22 I then ordered the Levites to purify themselves and act as guards at the gates, so that the Sabbathday might be kept holy. Remember this also to my credit, have pity on me in the greatness of your faithful love.	22 Ordinai inoltre ai leviti che, dopo essersi purificati, venissero a custodire le porte per santificare il giorno di sabato. Anche per questo ricòrdati di me, o Dio mio, e abbi pietà di me secondo la grandezza della tua misericordia!
23 At that time too, I saw Jews who had married wives from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab;	23 Sempre in quei giorni, notai che alcuni Giudei avevano sposato donne asdodite, moabite e ammonite;
24 as regards their children, half of them spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of theother peoples, but could no longer speak the language of Judah.	24 la metà dei loro figli parlava la lingua di Asdod, oppure la lingua di questo o quel popolo, e non sapevano parlare la lingua giudaica!
25 I reprimanded them, I cursed them, I struck several of them and tore out their hair and adjured themby God, 'You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons or let their daughters marry your sons, ormarry them yourselves!	25 Allora io li svergognai, li maledissi, ne picchiai alcuni, strappai loro i capelli e li feci giurare nel nome di Dio: "Non date le vostre figlie ai loro figli, né prendete tra le loro figlie delle spose per i vostri figli né per voi!
26 Was it not because of women like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Although among manynations there was no king like him and he was loved by his God, and God made him king of al Israel, even thenforeign women led him into sinning!	26 Non peccò forse per colpa di esse Salomone, re d'Israele? Non v'era fra i molti popoli un re simile a lui; era amato dal suo Dio e Dio l'aveva costituito re di tutto Israele. Eppure le donne straniere condussero anche lui a peccare!
27 Were you obedient when you committed this very grave crime: breaking faith with our God bymarrying foreign wives?'	27 Dovrà udirsi anche di voi che commettete questo grande male, che siete infedeli al nostro Dio prendendo donne straniere?".
28 One of the sons of Jehoiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanbal at theHoronite; I drove him from my presence.	28 Un figlio di Ioiadà, figlio di Eliasib, sommo sacerdote, era genero di Sanballàt, il coronita: io lo cacciai via da me.
29 Remember them, my God, for having defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priests andLevites!	29 Ricòrdati, o mio Dio, di essi, perché hanno profanato il sacerdozio e il patto dei sacerdoti e dei leviti!
30 And so I purged them of everything foreign; I drew up regulations for the priests and Levites, definingeach man's duty,	30 Così io li purificai da ogni forestiero; fissai gli uffici per sacerdoti e leviti, ciascuno al proprio servizio.
31 as wel as for the deliveries of wood at the proper times, and for the first-fruits. Remember this, myGod, to my credit!	31 Diedi pure disposizioni circa le offerte di legname ai tempi fissati, e le primizie. Ricòrdati di me in bene, o Dio mio!
