Genesis 43

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 But the famine in the country grew worse,	1 Or la carestia gravava sul paese.
2 and when they had finished eating the supplies which they had brought from Egypt their father said tothem, 'Go back and get us a little food.'	2 Quando ebbero finito di mangiare il grano che avevano portato dall'Egitto, il loro padre disse loro: "Ritornate a comperarci un po' di viveri".
3 'But', Judah replied, 'the man expressly warned us, "You wil not be admitted to my presence unlessyour brother is with you."	3 Ma Giuda gli disse: "Quell'uomo ci ha formalmente dichiarato: "Non verrete alla mia presenza a meno che il vostro fratello non sia con voi!".
4 If you are ready to send our brother with us, we will go down and get food for you.	4 Se tu sei disposto a lasciar partire con noi nostro fratello, noi scenderemo laggiù per comprarti grano;
5 But if you are not ready to send him, we will not go down, in view of the man's warning, "You wil notbe admitted to my presence unless your brother is with you." '	5 ma se tu non lo vuoi lasciar partire, noi non scenderemo, perché quell'uomo ci ha detto: "Non verrete alla mia presenza a meno che il vostro fratello non sia con voi!".
6 Then Israel said, 'Why did you bring this misery on me by tel ing the man you had another brother?'	6 E Israele disse: "Perché mi avete dato questo dispiacere di far conoscere a quell'uomo che avevate ancora un fratello?".
7 They replied, 'He kept questioning us about ourselves and our family, asking, "Is your father stillalive?" and, "Have you another brother?" That is why we told him. How could we know he was going to say,"Bring your brother down here"?'	7 Risposero: "Quell'uomo ci interrogò con insistenza intorno a noi e alla nostra parentela, dicendo: "E' ancora vivo vostro padre? Avete qualche fratello?", e noi rispondemmo secondo queste domande. Potevamo noi sapere che egli avrebbe detto: "Conducete qui vostro fratello"?".
8 Judah then said to his father Israel, 'Send the boy with me, and let us be off and go, if we are tosurvive and not die, we, you, and our dependants.	8 E Giuda disse a Israele, suo padre: "Lascia venire il ragazzo con me, e poi leviamoci e andiamo, per poter vivere e non morire, sia noi che tu e i nostri bambini.
9 I wil go surety for him, and you can hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you andproduce him before you, let me bear the blame al my life.	9 Io mi rendo garante di lui: dalle mie mani lo reclamerai. Se non te lo avrò condotto, se non te lo avrò posto davanti, io sarò colpevole contro di te per tutta la vita.
10 Indeed, if we had not wasted so much time we should have been there and back twice by now!'	10 Che se non avessimo indugiato, ora saremmo già di ritorno per la seconda volta".
11 Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be so, then do this: take some of the country's bestproducts in your baggage and take them to the man as a gift: some balsam, some honey, gum tragacanth, resin,pistachio nuts and almonds.	11 Allora Israele, loro padre, disse: "Se è così, fate pure: prendete nei vostri bagagli i prodotti scelti del paese e portateli in dono a quell'uomo: un po' di balsamo, un po' di miele, di gomma e resina, dei pistacchi e delle mandorle.
12 Take double the amount of money with you and return the money put back in the mouths of yoursacks; it may have been a mistake.	12 E riporterete con voi doppio danaro, il danaro cioè che fu rimesso nella bocca dei vostri sacchi lo riporterete indietro: forse si tratta di uno sbaglio.
13 Take your brother, and go back to the man.	13 Prendete pure vostro fratello, e partite, ritornate da quell'uomo.
14 May El Shaddai move the man to be kind to you, and al ow you to bring back your other brother andBenjamin. As for me, if I must be bereaved, bereaved I must be.'	14 Dio onnipotente vi faccia trovare misericordia presso quell'uomo, così che vi rilasci l'altro fratello e Beniamino. Quanto a me, una volta che dovrò esser privato dei miei figli, che ne sia privato".
15 The men took this gift; they took double the amount of money with them, and Benjamin. They set off,went down to Egypt and presented themselves before Joseph.	15 Gli uomini presero dunque questo dono, il doppio del denaro e anche Beniamino, e partirono, discesero in Egitto e si presentarono davanti a Giuseppe.
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them he said to his chamberlain, 'Take these men into the house.Slaughter a beast and prepare it, for these men are to eat with me at midday.'	16 Quando Giuseppe ebbe visto con loro Beniamino, disse a colui ch'era a capo della sua casa: "Conduci questi uomini in casa, macella quello che c'è da macellare e prepara, perché questi uomini mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno".
17 The man did as Joseph had ordered, and took the men to Joseph's house.	17 Quel personaggio fece come Giuseppe aveva detto e introdusse gli uomini nella casa di Giuseppe.
18 The men were afraid at being taken to Joseph's house and said, 'We are being taken there becauseof the money replaced in our sacks the first time. They wil set on us; they wil fal on us and make slaves of us,and take our donkeys too.'	18 Ma i nostri uomini si spaventarono, perché venivano condotti in casa di Giuseppe, e dissero: "E' per causa del denaro, rimesso nei nostri sacchi l'altra volta, che noi siamo condotti là: per poterci assalire, piombarci addosso e prenderci come schiavi con i nostri asini!".
19 So they went up to Joseph's chamberlain and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.	19 Allora si avvicinarono all'uomo che era a capo della casa di Giuseppe e parlarono con lui alla porta di casa.
20 'By your leave, sir,' they said, 'we came down once before to get supplies,	20 Gli dissero: "Scusa, mio signore, noi venimmo qui già un'altra volta per comperare dei viveri.
21 and when we reached camp and opened our sacks, there was each man's money in the mouth of hissack, to the full. But we have brought it back with us,	21 Quando fummo all'albergo, aprimmo i nostri sacchi ed ecco che il denaro di ciascuno si trovava alla bocca del suo sacco: proprio il nostro denaro col suo peso esatto. E allora noi l'abbiamo portato indietro,
22 and we have brought more money with us for the supplies. We do not know who put our money inour sacks.'	22 e per comperare dei viveri abbiamo portato con noi altro denaro. Non sappiamo chi sia stato a metterci nei sacchi il nostro denaro!".
23 'Set your minds at ease,' he replied, 'do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father puttreasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.' And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Ma quello disse: "State in pace, non temete! E' il vostro Dio e il Dio dei padri vostri che vi ha messo un tesoro nei sacchi; il vostro denaro è già pervenuto a me". E condusse loro Simeone.
24 The man then took the men into Joseph's house. He offered them water to wash their feet, and gavetheir donkeys fodder.	24 Poi quell'uomo fece entrare gli uomini nella casa di Giuseppe, diede loro dell'acqua perché si lavassero i piedi, e diede del foraggio ai loro asini.
25 They arranged their gift while they waited for Joseph to come at midday, for they had heard theywere to dine there.	25 Essi prepararono il dono nell'attesa che Giuseppe arrivasse a mezzogiorno, perché avevano sentito dire che avrebbe mangiato con loro in quel luogo.
26 When Joseph arrived at the house they offered him the gift they had with them, bowing low beforehim.	26 Quando Giuseppe arrivò a casa, essi gli presentarono il dono che avevano con sé, e si prostrarono davanti a lui con la faccia a terra.
27 He greeted them pleasantly, asking, 'Is your father wel , the old man you told me of ? Is he stillalive?'	27 Allora egli li salutò e disse: "Sta bene il vostro vecchio padre, di cui mi parlaste? Vive ancora?".
28 'Your servant our father is wel ,' they replied, 'he is stil alive,' and they bowed respectful y.	28 Risposero: "Il tuo servo, nostro padre, sta bene, è ancora vivo", e s'inginocchiarono e fecero una prostrazione.
29 Looking about, he saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. 'Is this your youngest brother', heasked, 'of whom you told me?' And he added, 'God be good to you, my son.'	29 Poi egli alzò gli occhi e vide Beniamino, suo fratello, il figlio di sua madre, e disse: "E' questo il vostro fratello più giovane, di cui mi parlaste?" e aggiunse: "Dio ti dia grazia, figlio mio!".
30 Joseph hurried out; so strong was the affection he felt for his brother that he wanted to cry. He wentinto his room and there he wept.	30 E Giuseppe si affrettò ad uscire, perché si era commosso nell'intimo alla presenza di suo fratello, e sentiva il bisogno di piangere; entrò nella sua camera e lì pianse.
31 After washing his face he returned and, controlling himself, gave the order: 'Serve the meal.'	31 Poi si lavò la faccia, uscì e, facendosi forza, ordinò: "Servite il pasto".
32 He was served separately; so were they, and so were the Egyptians who ate in his household, forthe Egyptians could not take food with Hebrews; Egyptians have a horror of doing so.	32 Fu servito per lui a parte, per loro a parte e per gli Egiziani, che mangiavano con loro, a parte, perché gli Egiziani non possono prender cibo con gli Ebrei: ciò sarebbe un abominio per gli Egiziani.
33 They were placed facing him in order of seniority, from the eldest to the youngest, and the menlooked at one another in amazement.	33 E si misero a sedere davanti a lui: il primogenito secondo la sua primogenitura e il più giovane secondo i suoi anni giovanili; e gli uomini si guardavano l'un l'altro con meraviglia.
34 He had portions carried to them from his own dish, the portion for Benjamin being five times largerthan any of the others. And they feasted with him and drank freely.	34 Egli fece portare loro delle porzioni prese dalla propria mensa, ma la porzione di Beniamino era cinque volte più grossa di quella di tutti gli altri. E con lui bevvero fino all'allegria.
