1 and Samuel spoke to all Israel.	1 Słowo Samuela docierało do wszystkich Izraelitów "jako słowo Pańskie". "W tym czasie Filistyni zgromadzili się, by walczyć przeciw Izraelitom". Izraelici wyruszyli do walki z Filistynami. Rozbili oni obóz koło Eben-Haezer, natomiast Filistyni rozbili obóz w Afek.
2 The Philistines then drew up in battle formation against Israel. After a fierce struggle Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the battlefield.	2 Filistyni przygotowali szyki bojowe przeciw Izraelitom i rozgorzała walka. Izraelici zostali pokonani przez Filistynów, tak że poległo na pobojowisku, na równinie, około czterech tysięcy ludzi.
3 When the troops retired to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD permitted us to be defeated today by the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the LORD from Shiloh that it may go into battle among us and save us from the grasp of our enemies."	3 Po powrocie ludzi do obozu starsi Izraela stawiali sobie pytanie: Dlaczego Pan dotknął nas klęską z ręki Filistynów? Sprowadźmy sobie tutaj Arkę Przymierza Pańskiego z Szilo, ażeby znajdując się wśród nas wyzwoliła nas z ręki naszych wrogów.
4 So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned upon the cherubim. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of God.	4 Lud posłał więc do Szilo i przywieziono stamtąd Arkę Przymierza Pana Zastępów, który zasiada na cherubach. Przy Arce Przymierza Bożego byli tam dwaj synowie Helego: Chofni i Pinchas.
5 When the ark of the LORD arrived in the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly that the earth resounded.	5 Gdy Arka Przymierza Pańskiego dotarła do obozu, wszyscy Izraelici podnieśli głos w radosnym uniesieniu, że aż ziemia drżała.
6 The Philistines, hearing the noise of shouting, asked, "What can this loud shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" On learning that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp,	6 Kiedy Filistyni usłyszeli głos okrzyków, mówili: Co znaczy ów głos tak gromkich okrzyków w obozie izraelskim? Gdy dowiedzieli się, że Arka Pańska przybyła do obozu,
7 the Philistines were frightened. They said, "Gods have come to their camp." They said also, "Woe to us! This has never happened before.	7 Filistyni przelękli się. Mówili: "Ich" Bóg przybył do obozu. Wołali: Biada nam! Nigdy dawniej czegoś podobnego nie było.
8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with various plagues and with pestilence.	8 Biada nam! Kto nas wybawi z mocy tych potężnych bogów? Przecież to ci sami bogowie, którzy zesłali na Egipt wszelakie plagi "na pustyni".
9 Take courage and be manly, Philistines; otherwise you will become slaves to the Hebrews, as they were your slaves. So fight manfully!"	9 Trzymajcie się dzielnie i bądźcie mężni, o Filistyni, żebyście się nie stali niewolnikami Hebrajczyków, podobnie jak oni byli niewolnikami waszymi. Bądźcie więc mężni i walczcie!
10 The Philistines fought and Israel was defeated; every man fled to his own tent. It was a disastrous defeat, in which Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.	10 Filistyni stoczyli bitwę i zwyciężyli Izraelitów, tak że uciekł każdy do swego namiotu. Klęska to była bardzo wielka. Zginęło bowiem trzydzieści tysięcy piechoty izraelskiej.
11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were among the dead.	11 Arka Boża została zabrana, a dwaj synowie Helego, Chofni i Pinchas, polegli.
12 A Benjaminite fled from the battlefield and reached Shiloh that same day, with his clothes torn and his head covered with dirt.	12 Pewien człowiek - Beniaminita - uciekł z pola walki i dotarł jeszcze w tym samym dniu do Szilo. Ubranie miał podarte, a głowę pokrytą ziemią.
13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting in his chair beside the gate, watching the road, for he was troubled at heart about the ark of God. The man, however, went into the city to divulge his news, which put the whole city in an uproar.	13 Kiedy nadszedł, Heli siedział na swym krześle obok drogi. Wyczekiwał. Niepokoił się przecież z powodu Arki Bożej. Gdy człowiek ten przyszedł, aby donieść miastu o nowinach, całe miasto podniosło krzyk.
14 Hearing the outcry of the men standing near him, Eli inquired, "What does this commotion mean?"	14 Heli posłyszawszy echo tego krzyku, zapytał: Co oznacza ten tak wielki hałas? Człowiek ów pośpieszył i przybywszy opowiedział Helemu.
15 (Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes would not focus, so that he could not see.)	15 Heli miał [wtedy] dziewięćdziesiąt osiem lat. Był ociemniały: nie mógł nic widzieć.
16 The man quickly came up to Eli and said, "It is I who have come from the battlefield; I fled from there today." He asked, "What happened, my son?"	16 Człowiek ów rzekł do Helego: Ja jestem tym, który przybył z obozu, z pola walki dziś uciekłem. Heli zaś zapytał: Cóż się stało, mój synu?
17 And the messenger answered: "Israel fled from the Philistines; in fact, the troops suffered heavy losses. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are among the dead, and the ark of God has been captured."	17 Zwiastun odpowiedział: Izraelici uciekli przed Filistynami, naród zaś poniósł ogromną klęskę. Zginęli dwaj twoi synowie, Chofni i Pinchas, Arka Boża została zabrana.
18 At this mention of the ark of God, Eli fell backward from his chair into the gateway; since he was an old man and heavy, he died of a broken neck. He had judged Israel for forty years.	18 Na wzmiankę o Arce Bożej Heli upadł z krzesła do tyłu, na krawędź bramy, złamał sobie kark i umarł. Był to bowiem człowiek stary i ociężały. Sprawował on sądy nad Izraelem przez czterdzieści lat.
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was with child and at the point of giving birth. When she heard the news concerning the capture of the ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she was seized with the pangs of labor, and gave birth.	19 Jego synowa, a żona Pinchasa, będąc brzemienną i bliską porodu, gdy tylko dowiedziała się, że Arka Boża została zabrana, że jej teść i mąż umarli, skuliła się i porodziła, bo przyszły na nią bóle porodowe.
20 She was about to die when the women standing around her said to her, "Never fear! You have given birth to a son." Yet she neither answered nor paid any attention.	20 Gdy konała, mówiły do niej kobiety, które ją otaczały: Nie obawiaj się! Przecież urodziłaś syna. Nie odpowiedziała jednak, nie zwróciła nawet na to uwagi.
21 (She named the child Ichabod, saying, "Gone is the glory from Israel," with reference to the capture of the ark of God and to her father-in-law and her husband.)	21 Chłopca nazwała Ikabod, mówiąc: Odstąpiła sława od Izraela z powodu zabrania Arki Bożej oraz [śmierci] jej teścia i męża.
22 She said, "Gone is the glory from Israel," because the ark of God had been captured.	22 Powtórzyła: Odstąpiła sława od Izraela, gdyż Arka Boża została zabrana.
